DVOC Field Trip Report

September 9, 2006 (Saturday)
John Heinz NWR (aka Tinicum)

Leader: Denis Brennan

Participants 16
Weather 68 degrees F

Starting at the Heinz HQ we checked the woods for migrating Warblers with little success. We headed across the large boardwalk and down the dyke trail to the observation tower. Along the way we saw Cooper's Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Black-crowned Night Heron imm, Northern Harrier, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Arriving at the observation tower we saw a raft of Blue-winged Teal. The best part of the walk was watching 20+ Black Terns in various plumages at close range that moved across our view several times. Chris Walters and Frank Windfelder entertained us with stories about birding at Tinicum in the past. We birded our way back to the parking area and finished at 11 AM.
