DVOC Field Trip Report
by Chris Walters
January 21, 2007
Barnegat, New Jersey
This is the “New Members” Barnegat trip report for January 21, 2007, advising of 85 Common Eiders, 30 Harlequin Ducks, 10 Black Scoters, 6 Horned Larks, Northern Gannet, 2 Meadowlarks and 12 Purple Sandpipers.
This windy half-day tour of the Barnegat Light area and Stafford Avenue in Manahawkin attracted our two newest members, Susan Jarnigan and Marty Dellwo, plus Win Shafer (joined 2005) and leader Chris Walters (several other hopeful “participants” had by error made this trip a day earlier).
Forty-three species were recorded, including the Black Vulture, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Red-tailed Hawk spotted enroute. The group repeatedly puzzled over the four Savannah Sparrows on the Lighthouse jetty (no Ipswich) and closely studied 70 Eiders at a distance of 50 yards (no King). The Meadowlarks were seen in flight in marshes south of Stafford Avenue.
The group took lunch at the Inlet Deli at Barnegat Light. Proceedings “adjourned” shortly after 2:30 p.m.
