John Hienz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, PA
|On Sunday, September 16th, 2007, members of
the DVOC & several guests totaling thirteen met at Tinicum for a field
trip. At 8 am the weather was fair at 52 degrees with a North wind at thirteen
mph. We decided to walk the pipeline trail to take advantage of the sunlight
behind us. From there we proceeded to the frog pond field area and retraced
our way back across the large boardwalk to the observation tower where the
field trip finished up shortly after 11 am.
Highlights of the trip; six Warblers including, Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, Magnolia, Common Yellowthroat and American Redstart. Other Highlights included Caspian Tern, Hooded Merganser female, Snowy Egret, Red-shouldered Hawk and Broad-winged Hawk.
Doris McGovern and Frank Windfelder were on the field trip. When the birding was slow or we saw something interesting Doris and Frank kept our attention as they filled us in on information. It was like having an outdoor classroom of Ornithology at Tinicum.
