DVOC Field Trip Report
by Bob Horton

November 28, 2008
Raccoon Ridge, NJ

As expected, it was a cold day on top of Raccoon Ridge, with winds of 10 to 20 knots and temperatures in the high 30's. Our group got our blood flowing with a two mile hike to the ridge along the Appalachian Trail from AMC's Mohican Shelter.

Although the bird quantities were not too high, there were some "quality" birds. We saw a total of 4 Golden Eagles, most of them close enough for good looks. We saw 2 Bald Eagles, both immature, second and third year.

Our greatest delight was a Northern Goshawk. We watched it overhead as it climbed higher and higher into the sky and finally lost it in the blue. Other raptors included Ret-tailed Hawks, Merlin and Sharp-shinned Hawks.

We also saw several local birds, including 7 Ravens, 5 Bluebirds, Robins, Goldfinch and others. In all, it was a very good trip in some brisk weather.
