Local Notes

· Frank Spitzer reported Fox Sparrows at his feeders in Washington Crossing, New Jersey for the 37th straight year. Frank recently returned from a bird trip to Australia and New Guinea, where he saw half the world's Birds of Paradise.
· Ron French reported a female Brewer's Blackbird he found December 16, 2001 while doing the Upper Bucks County Christmas Count.
· Further afield, Joe Majdan saw the Calliope Hummingbirds near the Cloisters in New York City, while Chuck Hetzel's daughter saw the Long-billed Murrelet on Lake Cayuga near Ithaca, New York. Long -billed Murrelet, until recently, was considered a subspecies of Marbled Murrelet.
· Still further afield, Jan Gordan reported returning from a recent trip to Belize and Honduras, where the organization "R.A.R.E." is training local bird guides.
· Joann Raine saw both Harris Sparrow and Sprague Pipit on a recent trip to Texas. She reported that the Bird Department at Texas A & M is also in the process -- just like our Academy here -- of replacing the cabinets which house their museum bird specimens.

Instead of a formal speaker, our Vice President Colin Campbell led members in the scheduled program called "Memorable Moments in Birding." Eight members took the floor. They told tales of several misadventures, including how Rick Mellon was knocked to earth by the attack of a Western Screech Owl, how a DVOC group led by Al Brady was nearly stranded on Little Beach Island, New Jersey by receding tides, and how the need for hot coffee by late DVOCer Sidney Lipschutz led to the finding of a Thick-billed Murre in Cape May Harbor. Members' stories included Chuck Hetzel's sounds of a young Horned Owl and slides of Doris McGovern's 1993 trip up the Dempster Highway in the Yukon Territory. Finally, "Memorable Moments" concluded with a tutorial by Don Jones, featuring a series of unmentionable bird sounds. Don's advice was that members use whatever technique best works for them, individually, in remembering the sounds of nature.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Walters -- Acting Secretary
