Minutes of the DVOC Meeting of June 7th, 2001

The meeting was called to order by Ron French.
36 members and 4 guests were present.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

The first reading of David Long's nomination for membership, proposed by Bob Mercer and Rick Mellon, was read.

Committee Reports:

Ornithological Studies:
Chuck Hetzel and Nate Rice have begun their studies of caratinoids in Orioles.

Field Trips:
Alan Brady reported on his very successful overnight May 25th Pelagic, with highlights of 39 Fulmars; 5 Cory's, 32 Greater and 13 Sooty Shearwaters; 5 Leach Storm-Petrel; 49 Pomarine Jaegers; 1 South Polar Skua; 4 Red-necked and 32 Red Phalaropes; and 2 Puffins.

Colin Campbell announced the following up coming programs -
Informal meetings the first Thursday in July, August and September
Sept 20 - Sam Fried on "Belize: Little known jewel of Central America"
Oct 4 - Frank Windfelder "Vagrant Birds: Western Willet"
Oct 13 - Daphne Gammell
Nov 1 - Members Slide Show
Nov 15 - Banquet: Guest Speaker is Bill Murphy author of the Trinidad & Tobago bird guide

There were no reports from Archives, Conservation, Publications, Checklist or Website


Ron French announced that this year's Banquet would be held at Williamson's on City Line Ave.

Ron also received letters from Leo Joseph and Nate Rice of the Academy's Ornithological Department, thanking the DVOC for their generous donation towards new cabinets for the skin collection.

Ron mentioned that Phil Street's extensive bird library in now in the possession of the DVOC and they would be announcing shortly how it will be auctioned off.

Naomi Murphy has collected $1094 to date from the Bird-a-thon pledges.

Charlie Wonderly noted that Ed Manners has 10 years of Wilson's Bulletin he is looking to unload.

Roy Frock and Matt Sharp, at the request of the Game Commission banded several nearly fledged Peregrines on the Delaware bridges.

Local Notes:
JoAnn Raine had a female and 8 day old Ruffed Grouse on a State Audubon Survey in Pike County.

Ron French had a total of 6 Bald Eagles (2 2nd, 2 3rd, 1 4th, 1 ad) and 6 Osprey at Peace Valley on a recent field trip. A Mississippi Kite was over 611 a week ago.

Joe Majdan has 30 pairs of Purple Martins at his feeders. He noted that they have a very protracted migration - from the 1st week in March until the July 10th.

Al Bilheimer was disappointed that the Cape May banders couldn't use him this year to band shorebirds. As a consolation he did get to see Curlew Sandpiper.

In the Not so local notes department:

Paul Guris returned from the Sierras and Yosemite, California with a number of life birds. Last weekend's North Carolina pelagics produced Black-capped Petrels, Cory Shearwaters, Red-billed Tropicbird, 2 Herald, 2 Fea's, 1 Bermuda and 2 Cuviers Beaked Whales.

Pete Bascinski presented a wonderful program on ALL the butterflies of New Jersey.
