The prior meeting minutes were approved as read.

On behalf of the Membership Committee, the President announced that five birders have applied as new members.

For the Publications Committee, Jane Henderson announced that a new Larus is available and being distributed.

Field Trips

A field trip was conducted today at the West Park Reservoir in Philadelphia.

Upcoming field trips include a four-day trip to the Niagara River for gulls (December 5-8). In addition, there will be a joint DVOC/BCDC trip from Brigantine NWR to Barnegat on Saturday, December 6 and a half-day trip to Roosevelt Park in Philadelphia December 14 (led by Keith Russell). Details are on the website.

Ornithological Studies

Jane Henderson gave us a fascinating talk on the fall roosting of Chimney Swifts in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. Her talk was accompanied by a great video of the swifts entering the roost.

Local Notes

People have been where they belong - - in the field:

• Bob Mercer had Blackburnian Warbler at Brigantine Refuge last weekend.
• Siskins were reported from Militia Hill (Henderson) and from Roxborough on November 20 (Hetzel).
• Hummingbirds (Selasphorus-type) were reported from Cape May November 16 (Walters) and Wilmington (Jeff Gordon).
• Bald Eagles, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, and Kestrels were all seen November 8-9 over the Pennypack Grasslands (Joann Raine).
• Roy Frock reported on his trip to Wisconsin and to the famous hawkwatch at Duluth, Minnesota. In one day there late in October, 492 Bald Eagles passed by, while 93 Goshawks were seen in a 3-day period.

Upcoming Programs

CMBO’s Mark Garland will be with us December 4. The December 18 meeting is Members’ photography night. All members are encouraged to show off their best slides and photos. Categories are Landscapes, Flora & Fauna, Birders, and Birds. Enter and win a prize!

Rick Mellon, DVOC’s President in 1988-1989, delivered the featured program. As a professional wildlife biologist, Rick has studied how tightly bird species are associated with different habitats. Despite the cascade of “boos” that his very name evoked when introduced, Rick gamely gave us his insights on such subjects, and answered an interesting variety of questions.

Respectfully submitted,

Christopher K. Walters
