Positions and Achievements
Fellow of the DVOC
I grew up in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, and was fortunate enough to live around the corner from Charlie Wonderly, who encouraged my early interest in birds. What the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards has said of old blues musicians seems to apply to birders as well: “Real gents, the great ones…always.” Through Charlie I’ve spent pleasant hours birding with the likes of Dale Twining, Ed Manners, Alan Brady, and Kate Brethwaite. One of my delightful recollections is an afternoon (October 9, 1992) of birding and botanizing at Dr. West’s Cape May Point property with Charlie, Kate, Ed, and Ed’s friend Oscar- witnessing the camaraderie and affection in the evening of life between friends who had spent decades enjoying the outdoors together. Charlie took me on the odd DVOC outing and to a few meetings, and I eventually (and belatedly) joined the Club in 2005.
