In the 1870 US Census Rhoads (age 8) is living in Haddonfield, NJ in a household that included father Charles Rhoads (age 43), step-mother Beulah (age 41), (sister Elenor (age 9), sister Anna N. (age 5), and two domestic servants.
In the 1880 US Census Rhoads (age 18) is not listed as living with his parents in Haddonfield, NJ. He appears to have been residing with his uncle's family in Marple Township, Delaware County, PA. He was attending Westtown School at the time.
Rhoads's uncle, Joseph Rhoads, owned extensive property along what is now South Sproul Road (Route 320) just north of the present Blue Route (Route 476) in Delaware County, PA. For the location on a modern map Click Here. To locate the property on an 1870 map Click Here. (Look for Joseph Rhoads bottom center in green.) Parts of this property are now contained in the St. Peter - St Paul Cemetery. In the collection of the Academy of Natural Sciences there are 81 specimens collected by Rhoads at or near this location. Most are from the 1878-1871 time period.
In the 1900 US Census Rhoads (age 38) was the head of a household living on Cedardale Avenue in the Cedardale Division of Haddon Township, Camden County, NJ. The household consisted of his wife Mary C. and son Evan (2 months old).
In the 1910 US Census Rhoads (age 48) was the head of a household living at 218 Redman Avenue, Haddonfield, NJ. The household consisted of his wife Mary C. and son Evan L. (10 years old).

In the 1920 US Census Rhoads (age 56) was the head of a household living at 81 Haddon Ave in the Borough of Haddonfield, Camden County, NJ. The household consisted of his wife Mary C. and son Evan L. (19 years old).
In the 1930 US Census Rhoads (age 67) was the head of a household living at 81 Haddon Avenue in the Borough of Haddonfield, Camden County, NJ. The house hold consisted of his wife Mary C. He is also listed as living at the Dufur Osteopathic Hospital in Horsham, Montgomery County, PA. (This is consistant with what we know about his hospitalization after 1926)
Unable to locate Rhoads in the 1940 US Census but as of this writing (7/12) many of the records have not been indexed.

At the age of 18 Samuel Nicholson
Rhoads was provided, by his parents, a farm that he named "Cedarcroft"
When he decided to move to Haddonfield he sold the farm and it was divided
up. He and his wife named the new development "Audubon" after
James Audubon. The orginal house at the Cedarcroft farm is still there. It is in Audubon NJ where Cedarcroft Avenue intersects with Mansion Ave. Click Here for a Google Map of the location. |
