Minutes of the DVOC
December 1, 2011
President Frank Windfelder called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Thirty members and three guests were present.
The minutes of the November 3rd meeting were approved as submitted.
Committees:
Membership:
Chair Anita Guris announced that the name tags will now be placed at the front
desk so that attendees can pick them up when they sign in. She also reported
that she had received an application from Linda Widdop of Rydal, PA.
Conservation:
Chair Phil Witmer is looking for suggestions as to which organization we should
donate our funds from the 2012 World Series of Birding. Please contact Phil
with your suggestions.
Programs:
Vice President Art McMorris announced the upcoming programs.
On December 15, Dr. Laurie Goodrich will present “Stopover Ecology of
Migrating Hawks in Eastern Pennsylvania”
January 5 will be our Annual Meeting, which will include elections of new officers,
the Treasurer’s Report and a short presentation by Bert Filemyr entitled
“From the archives: February 3, 1890”. Refreshments will again be
coordinated and provided by Bonnie and Phil Witmer.
On January 19, Rob Bierregarrd will present “Juvenile and Adult Osprey
Migration between North and South America: Routes, Timing and Mortality”.
Field Trips:
Marty Dellwo conducted the trip reports and announcements:
Trip Reports:
November 5 – Saw-whet Owl Banding, Hidden Valley, PA. Debbie Beer reported
that only 2 Saw-whet Owls were banded. This year has produced the lowest number
of owls banded since the project began.
November 13 – Kirkwood Preserve and Rushton Farm. Debbie Beer reported
that this location has excellent field habitat. American Kestrel, Pileated Woodpecker
and thousands of Common grackles were some of the birds seen on this trip.
Trip Announcements:
December 31 – Conowingo Dam, MD and Perryville, PA. An excellent concentration
of Bald Eagles occurs below the dam at this time of the year. We will also search
for wintering waterfowl near Perryville. Leader is Tom Reeves.
January 7 – Philadelphia Midwinter Birding Census – An annual event
lead by Keith Russell.
January 14-16 – Montauk, NY We will visit various habitat looking for
winter species as we work our way out Long Island. The leaders are Erica Brendel
and Chris Walters.
Announcements:
Several members announced upcoming Christmas Bird Counts and the need for more
participants.

Northern Shrike reported by Adrian Binns on Thanksgiving Day.
American Bittern and Female Redhead by Frank Windfelder.
Common Teal by Todd Fellenbach.
Marty Dellwo reported a Pink-footed Goose at Pine Run, Bucks County, PA
A second hand report from Ed Finkel of a Swainson’s Hawk in New Lebanon
Township, PA
Mike Fritz reported a Green Towhee at Blue Marsh, PA. Mile also reported a trip
off Cape May that produced 270 Great Shearwaters, 21 Manx Shearwaters and 5
Northern Fulmars.
Main Program:
Vice President Art McMorris presented the annual slide competition. Barry Ashby,
Andy Smith and Patty Rehn were the judges.
