This is a species that winters in our area. A
portion of the original image has been blown up to show part of the coverts,
flank and belly.

"Going through recently taken photos I was surprised
to see such a distinctive under wing pattern on what is a relatively common
bird - a species we all know and see in the appropriate habitat. I had never
noticed this pattern before. It is a neat pattern and in this case likely produced
because all the primary and flight feathers are bunched together making the
wing appear narrow. The bird was a good distance away and I have had to blow
up the image to show just the last half of the under wing (any more of the image
would have given away the bird). I apologize for the poor quality of this image.
Any guesses?"
