Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

I'm Mike Lyman filling in for the vacationing Steve Kacir. I will be your guide for birding in the Greater Philadelphia Region. This week, we highlight reports of Western Tanager and good migration in both warblers and shorebirds

Cape May County:

On Wednesday morning, August 13, highlights from Higbee's Beach included a very strong warbler migration consisting of hundreds of AMERICAN REDSTARTS, YELLOW and BLACK AND WHITE WARBLERS; with lesser numbers of CERULEAN, TENNESSEE, BLACKBURNIAN, WORM-EATING and MOURNING WARBLERs seen here this day. On Monday August 11, a LAWRENCE WARBLER was well seen at Higbee's Beach. Cape May State Park on August 13, held PECTORAL and STILT SANDPIPER at Bunker Pond and 2 PIPING PLOVERS along with an adult BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (first reported Saturday August 9) at the Plover Ponds. Hidden Valley had a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and HOODED WARBLER present on Saturday August 9, and a first fall male GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER on August 10. Tuesday August 12, seen from the Woodcock Trail Tract of Cape May NWR were YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and a flyover DICKCISSEL. August 14, from the TNC Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge, reports of a LARK SPARROW.

On the evening of August 9, observers on an organized kayaking trip witnessed a mega roost of approximately 20,000 PURPLE MARTINS by the Maurice River.

Thursday, August 14, Edwin B. Forsythe, AKA Brigantine, continued to hold the long staying GLAUCOUS GULL in the North Pool and AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN in the East Pool. Also seen in the East Pool this day were a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE as well as a report of WHITE-FACED IBIS at the refuge.

August 11, DeLea Sod Farm also held a female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD in a mixed blackbird flock. Also seen here was 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.

Monday, August 11, Dream Park in Logan Township had a lone female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.

Bergen County
In Wyckoff on August 12, an observer had 14 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS fly toward the Wyckoff Nature Center. Near the Oradell Reservoir on Sunday August 10, a Merlin was seen.

Thousand Acre Marsh held a drake REDHEAD on August 9.

Kent County:

On August 11, Bombay Hook held many good shorebirds, among these were a dozen LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS in Raymond's Pool, a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE in the South end of Bear Swamp, 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES in Finis Pool and an Immature BLACK TERN over Shearness Pool. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen on August 12, from the base of Lockerman Street Bridge on the west side of the St. Jones River.

On August 8, an observer had 19 KILLDEER from Rock Way near Council Rock High School South, this sod farm has in the past held grasspipers and other unusual shorebirds for the area, making it a worthy stop. Also on this day, at Peace Valley Nature Center, a kettle consisting of an Immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK AND RED-TAILED HAWK, provided a nice study in Buteo identification. The following day, August 9, an or the same Immature RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen numerous times throughout the day between the nature center and Chapman Road bridge, this is an unusual find this time of year for Peace Valley. LESSER BLACK BACKED GULLS were found also at Peace Valley on August 9. On August 10, 2 Immature LITTLE BLUE HERONS were seen from Woodbourne Road at Core Creek Park.

On August 12, from the Freemansburg area, a report of a WESTERN TANAGER seen by the locktender's house, along the Lehigh Canal. On August 13, Bear Swamp held a SORA in the pre- dawn hours. This same day at Lake Minsi a COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen.

August 10, observer had SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER across the street from 860 Nestle Way in Fogelsville.

On August 9, Lake Ontelaunee had a COMMON RAVEN. This same day from a private residence in Berks reports of nesting success for SHARP-SHINNED HAWK with 5 fledglings.

Announcements

On August 16, Martin Selzer will lead a DVOC field trip to Edwin B Forsythe AKA Brigantine to catch the later wave of the shorebird migration spectacle. The trip will meet at the
Refuge headquarters at 8:00AM.

The next meeting of the DVOC is Thursday September 4th at 7:30pm at Silver Lake Nature Center, 1306 Bath Rd., Bristol, PA. This is an informal meeting scheduled to highlight attendees summer adventures in birding. More details can be found on the DVOC website http://www.dvoc.org, and guests are always welcome.

What is the Delaware Valley?

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
