Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This week, we highlight reports of WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL in Delaware waters; LITTLE EGRET and CURLEW SANDPIPER in Kent County, DE; BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK in New Castle County, DE; WHITE IBIS in Lancaster County, PA and Atlantic & Hudson Counties, NY.

Cape May County:

On Aug 23, Higbee Beach WMA had a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and WORM-EATING WARBLER. On Aug 26, the Morning Flight Project at Higbee’s dike area noted 2 DICKCISSELS; a LARK SPARROW; TENNESSEE, BLACKBURNIAN, CAPE MAY and PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS. Other highlights from Higbee included BLUE GROSBEAKS and BOBOLINKS. The Bunker Pond at Cape May Point State Park had a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on Aug 23. Nummy’s Island had 4 RED KNOTS and a TRICOLORED HERON that day.

The Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR still hosted AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN through Aug 24, and the juvenile WHITE IBIS was seen as recently as Aug 23. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and BLACK TERNS were at the refuge on Aug 23. MARBLED GODWIT was reported from the refuge Aug 23-24. A family of SORA was at the south drive on Aug 24. Other notable sightings from the refuge included NORTHERN BOBWHITES, CASPIAN TERNS, WHIMBRELS, WESTERN and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Three juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Malibu Beach WMA on Aug 27.

A MOURNING WARBLER and WINTER WREN were seen from the pedestrian path near the area of the scout camp and Raccoon Alley on Aug 23. Other notable sightings from Sandy Hook that day included PIPING PLOVER and 7 BLACK TERNS. On Aug 26, Manasquan Reservoir had a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER at the wetland pond near the bait shop and visitor center. A pelagic out of Belmar noted RED-NECKED PHALAROPES; WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS; POMARINE and LONG-TAILED JAEGER; CORY’S, GREATER, AUDUBON’S AND MANX SHEARWATERS.

On Aug 27, two UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen from Route 611 (Shirley Rd) about a quarter mile east of Jefferson Rd. That day, 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, an adult and 2 juvenile BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were found at the intersection of Route 40 and Pointers-Auburn Rd.

The National Park dredge spoils had BOBOLINKS and a MOURNING WARBLER on Aug 21; a CAPE MAY WARBLER was there on Aug 26. That day, the Wheelabrator site had BOBOLINKS and 2 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, while a PHILADELPHIA VIREO was at Wheelabrator on Aug 26. A WINTER WREN and CANADA WARBLER were at Floodgates Rd on Aug 27.

A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was at the Baker St side of Leon’s Sod Farm in Pittstown on Aug 27.

This week the Raccoon Ridge Hawk Watch reported COMMON RAVEN and BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.

Over 100 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew by Succasunna on Aug 21.

NJ Extralimitals:

In Hudson County, a juvenile WHITE IBIS was in Harrier Meadow in the meadowlands Aug 20-21. While this area is off limits to the public, you may be able to arrange access through the Meadowlands Commission. The bird has also been seen from Richard W DeKorte Park in Bergen County as recently as Aug 26.

New Castle County

The Thousand Acre Marsh BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK was seen on Aug 23. BLACK and CASPIAN TERNS were at the Thousand Acre Marsh that day as well. MARBLED GODWITS were in the area of the Thousand Acre Marsh through Aug 27. On Aug 23, a juvenile WILSON’S PHALAROPE was seen at the last puddle on the west side of Route 9 before high ground. On Aug 23, Ashland Nature Center had YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, CHESTNUT-SIDED and NASHVILLE WARBLERS. On Aug 22, nearly 300 CHIMNEY SWIFTS were seen entering a chimney at Brecks Mill. On Aug 27, Flint Woods Preserve had BOBOLINKS; MAGNOLIA, WORM-EATING and NASHVILLE WARBLERS.

Kent County:

The LITTLE EGRET at Bombay Hook NWR was seen near the sluice gate at Shearness Pool from 8:30-9:00AM on Aug 23, and later the LITTLE EGRET was seen in a tidal gut near the sluice gate that runs perpendicular to the road. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was spotted from the Shearness observation tower on Aug 24, and a second hand report had a CURLEW SANDPIPER at Shearness on Aug 26. Bombay Hook had an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Shearness Pool on Aug 21 & 25. Eight CATTLE EGRETS were at Bombay Hook’s Bear Swamp on Aug 27. Through the week, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were reported from the refuge. Port Mahon had AMERICAN AVOCETS On Aug 26.

Sussex County:

On Aug 21, Prime Hook NWR’s north impoundment at Broadkill Rd had LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. That day, the marsh along Prime Hook Rd had 2 BLACK-NECKED STILTS and a STILT SANDPIPER, while 3 TRICOLORED HERONS were at the north side of Fowler Beach Rd. The DuPont Nature Center at the Mispillion Harbor Reserve had 37 CASPIAN TERNS on Aug 21. An overnight pelagic trip out of Lewes had 2 WHITE-FACED STORM-PETRELS, 4 LEACH’S STORM-PETRELS, WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS, BLACK TERNS, CORY’S and AUDUBON’S SHEARWATERS. Thompson Island Preserve had BLUE GROSBEAKS on Aug 26.

On Aug 21, Carpenter’s Woods had a CANADA WARBLER.

On Aug 21, Norristown Farm Park had 15-20 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, and two more were seen there on Aug 23. On Aug 27, the mudflats at the Church Rd area of Green Lane Reservoir had a juvenile BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, CASPIAN TERNS and a MERLIN. On Aug 22, a MOURNING WARBLER was at the McKaig Nature Center.

On Aug 22, Pine Run had over 30 BOBOLINKS. At least 2 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were at Peace Valley Park that day. A LEAST BITTERN was at the lake edge seen from the end of old Limekiln Rd at Peace Valley on Aug 21. Other highlights from Peace Valley included MERLIN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BELLIED and LEAST FLYCATCHER, WORM-EATING and MOURNING WARBLERS. A MERLIN and WESTERN SANDPIPER were spotted from Churchville Nature Center’s Elm Ave on Aug 24. Core Creek Park had up to 3 LITTLE BLUE HERONS

BOBOLINKS began to show up at the Koch property this week, and a HOODED WARBLER appeared there on Aug 25.

Lehigh County:

This week, Bake Oven Knob had PILEATED WOODPECKER, COMMON RAVENS, MERLINS, PEREGRINE FALCONS and BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. An immature dark-phase BROAD-WINGED HAWK flew by Bake Oven Knob on Aug 26

Schuykill County:

A CANADA WARBLER and PILEATED WOODPECKER were at Sweet Arrow Lake on Aug 25.

Berks County:

An adult male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL perched briefly at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s North Lookout on Aug 25, and a CERULEAN WARBLER was at Hawk Mountain the next day. A COMMON NIGHTHAWK flew past the hawk watch on Aug 27. BOBOLINKS, RED-SHOULDERED and BROAD-WINGED HAWKS flew past Hawk Mountain this week, and a GREAT EGRET flew by on Aug 24. Blue Marsh Lake had a juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and 3 CASPIAN TERNS on Aug 25. The State Hill Hawk Watch at Blue Marsh noted 3 BLACK TERNS on Aug 26.

Lancaster County:

A juvenile WHITE IBIS was still being seen at a pair of ponds near Stop #1 of the Middle Creek WMA driving tour, with the most recent sighting from Aug 24. On Aug 26, Lancaster County Central Park had YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER; PHILADELPHIA VIREO; BLUE GROSBEAKS; CAPE MAY, BLACKBURNIAN, CERULEAN, WORM-EATING, WILSON’S and CANADA WARBLERS. The Conejohela Flats had BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER Aug 26-27 and WHIMBREL through Aug 27. The continuing SANDHILL CRANE was at Avocet Point on Aug 27. Other birds at the flats that day included BOBOLINKS and CASPIAN TERNS.

Lebanon County:

The Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, MERLINS and PEREGRINE FALCON this week. Second Mountain’s second early GOLDEN EAGLE flew past on Aug 21.

Carbon County:

On Aug 27, Blue Mountain Ski Resort had LEAST and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS; COMMON RAVEN; BOBOLINKS; YELLOW-THROATED VIREO; CANADA, BLACKBURNIAN, BAY-BREASTED and MOURNING WARBLER


Extralimital Reports

MARYLAND:
On Aug 21, a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD came to feeders on private property in Tracy’s Landing, Anne Arundel County. A pelagic out of Lewes, DE had 13 BRIDLED TERNS in Maryland waters. A juvenile WHITE IBIS was at Hughes Hollow in Montgomery County through Aug 24.

MASSACHUSETTS:
A BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD has been coming to a feeder in Dennis on Cape Cod, Barnstable County. Principally an early morning bird, the BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD was seen as recently as the morning of Aug 27.

On August 31, Frank Windfelder will lead a DVOC field trip to Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Burlington County, NJ for early fall migrants. The trip will meet at the park’s parking lot at 6:45AM. The next meeting of the DVOC is Thursday September 4th at 7:30pm at Silver Lake Nature Center, 1306 Bath Rd., Bristol, PA. What is the Delaware Valley?

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
