Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This week, we highlight reports of RED-NECKED STINT in Cape May County, NJ; WHITE IBIS in Sussex County, DE and MISSISSIPPI KITE in Northampton County, PA.

On Aug 30, a RED-NECKED STINT was seen at a wet area to the east of the parking lot at the Two Mile Landing Restaurant, which is off Ocean Drive at Wildwood Crest. (Pictures of this birds are available on Karl and Judy Luken's website.) A juvenile LONG-TAILED JAEGER patrolled the rips off Cape May Point on Aug 28. Highlights from Higbee Beach WMA this week included BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO; SWAINSON’S THRUSH; PHILADELPHIA VIREO; BLUE GROSBEAKS; DICKCISSEL; PROTHONOTARY, CANADA, TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, WILSON’S and CAPE MAY WARBLERS. A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was at Cape May Point State Park on Aug 31. On Aug 28, two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were at the state park’s plover ponds. On Sep 2, a PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from the Cape May Point State Park Hawk Watch. Other sightings from the State Park included BOBOLINKS, CANADA WARBLER, TRICOLORED HERONS, CATTLE EGRETS, MERLINS, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, BROWN PELICANS, BAIRD’S and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, BLACK and CASPIAN TERNS. The Nature Conservancy’s Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge had an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER on Aug 31 and 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on Aug 29. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at the Migratory Bird Refuge on Sep 1.

Malibu Beach WMA had 3 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, WHITE-RUMPED and STILT SANDPIPERS on Aug 30. On Aug 31, a WILSON’S and 4 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were found in the pool before the tower on the main loop at the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR. Two RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were still at the refuge on Sep 1. That day the refuge had 4 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the dirt field area, past the dog-leg turn near the endangered species sign. The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was still at the refuge through Aug 31. Also noted at Brigantine on Aug 31 were AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and MARBLED GODWIT. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was reported from Brigantine on Aug 31 & Sep 2. An AMERICAN AVOCET was at Brigantine on Aug 28, and 2 AVOCETS were seen on Aug 31. Other highlights this week at Brigantine were BOBOLINKS, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, CATTLE EGRETS, TRICOLORED HERON, WHIMBREL, WHITE-RUMPED and STILT SANDPIPERS, BLACK and CASPIAN TERNS. Tuckahoe WMA had an AMERICAN AVOCET in the middle impoundment on Aug 28.

On Sep 1, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was at Silver Ridge in Toms River.

Monmouth County:

Sandy Hook had a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER at the Salt Ponds through Aug 31, and a STILT SANDPIPER was there on Aug 28. On Aug 31, the Salt Ponds had WHIMBREL, WHITE-RUMPED and WESTERN SANDPIPER, and passerine migrants included CAPE MAY WARBLERS, an OLIVE-SIDED and 2-3 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS. On Aug 28, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was at the north end of Sandy Hook. Other sightings at Sandy Hook this week included BLACK TERN and MERLIN.

The hawk watch at Raccoon Ridge noted COMMON RAVENS and a Porcupine on Aug 31. The Scott’s Mountain Hawk Watch noted MERLINS, BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and PILEATED WOODPECKER.

NJ Extralimitals:

In Bergen County, a juvenile WHITE IBIS was still being seen at Richard W DeKorte Park as recently as Aug 30. The bird was seen near low tide and east of the wooden bridge on the Saw Mill Creek Trail.

New Castle County

On Aug 28-29, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT and 3 MARBLED GODWITS were at the Thousand Acre Marsh near the turn off Route 9 on the south end of the bridge. BLACK TERNS were at the marsh on Aug 28, and a probable BONAPARTE’S GULL was seen there the next day. BOBOLINKS were seen at Thousand Acre Marsh on Aug 29 and Sep 1. On Aug 31, a LEAST FLYCATCHER was found at Old Creek Rd near Thompsons Bridge Rd at White Clay Creek State Park, with other highlights from the park being YELLOW-THROATED VIREO; PRAIRIE, BLACKBURNIAN and CANADA WARBLERS. Two dozen COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, NASHVILLE and BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS were at Ashland Nature Center on Aug 29. Highlights from the Ashland Nature Center Hawk Watch included BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and a WORM-EATING WARBLER near the platform on Aug 27. Migrants at Brandywine Creek State Park this week included CANADA, PRAIRIE, NASHVILLE and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. On Aug 29, well over 30 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew past Hawkwatch Hill at Brandywine Creek State Park, and over 58 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew past Granogue’s Tower hill that evening.

A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was near the Prime Hook NWR headquarters area on Aug 29. On Aug 30, an adult and a juvenile WHITE IBIS, BLACK-NECKED STILTS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and at least 12 BLACK TERNS were seen at Prime Hook Beach Rd. On Aug 31, an albino BARN SWALLOW was seen at Oyster Rocks Rd. On Sep 1 & 3, BLUE GROSBEAKS were at the Cape Henlopen State Park Hawk Watch. That day, 2 SANDWICH TERNS were off the point at Cape Henlopen, while CASPIAN TERNS were on the beach.

A deceased American Woodcock was found near City Hall, probably a migrant that fell victim to an urban Peregrine.

This week, the Rose Tree Park Hawk Watch noted BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS and a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.

A high count of 3 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS was made at Green Lane Reservoir’s Church Rd mudflats on Aug 30, with BAIRD’S SANDPIPER noted through Sep 2. The Church Rd mudflats also had SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and MERLIN through Sep 1. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER flew from snag to snag at the pond at the White’s Mill Preservation Area on Aug 29-30. On Aug 31, Norristown Farm Park tallied 72 BOBOLINK sightings in an hour near the farm pond, where a LEAST FLYCATCHER was also seen. On Aug 30, Riverbend Environmental Education Center had a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER. The Nighthawk Migration Watch at Haverford College noted 430 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS on Aug 30, and 145 NIGHTHAWKS were seen at the Militia Hill Hawk Watch at Fort Washington State Park on Sep 1.

Recent sightings from Peace Valley Park included LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, FORSTER’S TERN, PILEATED WOODPECKER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and TENNESSEE WARBLERS. GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was reported from the area of Peace Valley’s Scout Trail Aug 30-Sep 2. Birds reported from Core Creek Park included a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER on Aug 28. A STILT SANDPIPER was at Core Creek Park’s Woodbourne Rd causeway on Sep 1. LITTLE BLUE HERONS and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were at Core Creek through Sep 1. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS have returned to the Morrisville levee. On Aug 28, two MOURNING WARBLERS were at Washington Crossing Historic Park.

Northampton County:

A probable MISSISSIPPI KITE flew past Little Gap’s hawk banding station on Sep 2. On Sep 1, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, YELLOW-BELLIED and LEAST FLYCATCHER were seen from the Little Gap lookout.

Bake Oven Knob sightings this week included BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, COMMON RAVENS, PILEATED WOODPECKER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen from Leaser Lake on Aug 31.

Sightings from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary this week included MERLINS, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, BOBOLINKS, PHILADELPHIA and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, YELLOW-BELLIED and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. Hawk Mountain had a nice warbler flight on Sep 3 including CAPE MAY, BLACKBURNIAN and BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS. Lake Ontelaunee had 8 BLACK TERNS on Aug 30, and 4 CASPIAN TERNS the next day. On Aug 30, fifty-eight BOBOLINKS flew past Gotwals Pond in Oley that day. SGL-110 had 2 CASPIAN TERNS, PILEATED WOODPECKER and HOODED WARBLERS on Sep 1.

On Aug 28, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT flew past Gull Island at the Conejohela Flats. Other birds at the flats that day included a WHIMBREL and SANDERLING at Avocet Point, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Gull Island. A male REDHEAD was upstream of Gull Island on Aug 30. The flats had 2 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS on Aug 30. On Sep 3, the flats had a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 10 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 3 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS. The SANDHILL CRANE was found at the flats over the weekend. Other sightings in the area this week included CASPIAN, FORSTER’S and BLACK TERNS.

Lebanon County:

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew past the Second Mountain Hawk Watch on Aug 28, and two more GOSHAWKS were tallied on Sep 1. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at Second Mountain on Aug 31, and a GOLDEN EAGLE flew by on Sep 2.

Extralimital Reports

MARYLAND:
On Aug 31, a WESTERN MEADOWLARK was found at a turf farm on Route 331 just north of Route 14 and south of Hurlock, Dorchester County.

MASSACHUSSETTS:
The BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD in Dennis, Barnstable County was seen again on Sep 2-3. The bird may be more likely to visit feeders when fewer birders are in attendance and prefers to visit the feeders in the morning.

 

Announcements

On Sep 8, Jane Henderson will lead a joint Wyncote Audubon and DVOC field trip to the John Story Jenks School at 8310 Germantown Ave in Philadelphia to view roosting Chimney Swifts. The trip will meet at the school’s playground at 6:45PM. On Sep 14, Denis Brennan will lead a DVOC field trip to John Heinz NWR at Tinicum in Philadelphia County for fall migrants. The trip will meet at 8:00AM at the Cusano Environmental Education Center. Target species include Blue-winged Teal, Bobolink, Black-throated Blue Warbler and more. The next meeting of the DVOC is Thursday September 4th at 7:30pm at Silver Lake Nature Center, 1306 Bath Rd., Bristol, PA. This is an informal meeting scheduled to highlight attendees summer adventures in birding. More details can be found on the DVOC website http://www.dvoc.org, and guests are always welcome.

What is the Delaware Valley?

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
