This week, we highlight reports of EARED GREBE in Ocean County, NJ; BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK in Sussex County, DE; BARNACLE GOOSE in Hunterdon County, NJ; RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS in Ocean and Cape May Counties, NJ; GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE in Camden County, NJ and GAMBEL’S WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW in Bucks County, PA.

Cape May County:

The most recent sighting of the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS at 711 New England Rd in Cape May came from Jan 1. Up to 2 SNOWY OWLS have been seen at Stone Harbor Point. The most recent report was on Jan 7, and sightings been made from the Stone Harbor Point parking lot, a house rooftop at 1st Ave, 111th St, a signpost in the Saltmarsh and along the beach. On Jan 5, three IPSWICH SPARROWS were seen at Stone Harbor Point, and two more were found on Jan 7 when SNOW BUNTINGS were on the beach as well. On Jan 2, five SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were at Stone Harbor Point. On Jan 1, Stone Harbor had 2 PURPLE SANDPIPERS and SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, while Nummy’s Island hosted 3 WESTERN WILLETS and a WESTERN SANDPIPER. RED KNOTS were seen at Stone Harbor Point on Jan 1-2 & Jan 5. On Jan 3, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, 2 EASTERN PHOEBES and 3 PURPLE FINCHES were at Cape May Point State Park. On Jan 2, the State Park had a GLAUCOUS GULL at the Bunker Pond and SNOW BUNTINGS on the beach near the second dune crossing. On Jan 1, an EASTERN PHOEBE, NASHVILLE WARBLER and 2 PALM WARBLERS were at the State Park’s Red Trail. The Nature Conservancy’s Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge hosted a DICKCISSEL on Jan 5. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Sunset Beach on Jan 2. Jake’s Landing had 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS and a WILSON’S SNIPE on Jan 2. A PURPLE SANDPIPER was at Reeds Beach on Jan 7. On Jan 5, Sea Isle City had a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 2 LEAST SANDPIPER, a HARLEQUIN DUCK & RED KNOT around 34th St, and 2 COMMON EIDER at 2nd St.

A SNOWY OWL was seen at the Bayshore Discovery Project in Bivalve on Dec 26, and spotted as recently as Jan 3. On Dec 31, possibly the same SNOWY OWL was seen from Laura Ave in Fortescue.

Atlantic County:

A SHORT-EARED OWL hunted the marshes of the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR on Jan 1.

Monmouth County:

On Jan 2, the pelagic Christmas Bird Count (CBC) out of Belmar found a DOVEKIE only 4 miles offshore, and 75 DOVEKIES were seen on the trip -- all no more than 10 miles offshore. Other highlights from the CBC included WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 115 NORTHERN GANNETS, 245 BONAPARTE’S GULLS, a NELSON’S GULL (GLAUCOUS X HERRING GULL), 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and 26 RAZORBILLS. On Jan 5, a LARK SPARROW flushed from the salt pond area of Sandy Hook. On Jan 3, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at Sandy Hook’s Plum Island, and a RAZORBILL was seen near shore at C beach. On Jan 5, a RAZORBILL was off the north end of B-Lot. Other recent sightings from Sandy Hook included NORTHERN GANNETS, TUNDRA SWANS and SNOW BUNTINGS. Highlights from the Jan 3 Long Branch CBC included 2 CACKLING GEESE, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Wall Municipal Complex, COMMON EIDER, RED-NECKED GREBE, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and SNOW BUNTINGS. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was on Lake Assunpink on Jan 5. That day, 3 CACKLING GEESE were seen from Route 524 in Perrineville, and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was spotted from Route 537 between Route 34 and Dorbrook Park. That evening, seawatching at Monmouth Beach turned up a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and 4 RAZORBILLS.

On Jan 4, an ICELAND GULL was found off Route 130 near Florence, and a gathering of gulls near the bend in the river near Roebling included 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, an ICELAND GULL and a GLAUCOUS GULL.

Camden County:

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE has been visiting a backyard feeder at 1147 Mansion Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108, which is off of Cuthbert Blvd. The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was found there on Jan 1, and has been seen as recently as Jan 5. Homeowners, John and Peggy McDevit, welcome birders to come and see the TOWHEE, and request that birders knock on the door, upon arrival. If there is no answer, you can proceed softly and quietly along the driveway to view the backyard feeders. The TOWHEE has also been feeding under shrubs on the left side of the yard. Thank-you John and Peggy for your hospitality and generosity. PINE SISKINS and PURPLE FINCHES were seen in Cedarbrook on Jan 6.

Ocean County:

On Jan 1, a report from Barnegat Lighthouse State Park noted 35 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 17 HARLEQUIN DUCKS and 7 SURF SCOTERS. An EARED GREBE was spotted from the Bay Ave pavilion in Barnegat during the Barnegat Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Jan 4. Three KING EIDERS were spotted from the Holgate parking lot during the count, while counters at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park noted a RED-NECKED GREBE, RAZORBILL and 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS that were in the pines near the lighthouse. Manahawkin WMA had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS for the CBC. Other highlights from the Barnegat CBC included 3 more KING EIDERS, COMMON EIDERS, HARLEQUIN DUCKS, a GOLDEN EAGLE in the Cedar Run/Mayetta area, a RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD on private property in Cedar Run, a COMMON RAVEN in the West Creek area and 2 SEDGE WRENS in a closed area of Edwin B Forsythe NWR.

The Califon BARNACLE GOOSE was spotted at the south branch of the Raritan River across from the Methodist Church through Jan 4. The BARNACLE GOOSE was also spotted behind Mellick’s Orchard on Route 513 on Jan 1-2. On Jan 1, a GLAUCOUS GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and HORNED LARKS were at the boat ramp at Spruce Run Reservoir. Seventeen WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over Thatcher’s Hill in Flemington on Jan 6.

Middlesex County:

An ICELAND GULL was at Highland Park’s Donaldson Park on Jan 5.

Mercer County:

On Jan 2, a CACKLING GOOSE and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE were seen on open water at the marina of Mercer County Park in Lawrenceville/Hamilton. The flock with which those birds had been associated later relocated to the ballfields, where the GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was also seen. That day, a SHORT-EARED OWL and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 1 dark phase and 1 light phase, were at the Federal City Rd side of Mercer County Park Northwest, also known as the pole farm. .

Two SANDHILL CRANES at a business complex were spotted in a field bounded by Mettlers Rd and Weston Rd, about 100 yards north of Somerset County Colonial Park on Jan 4-6. The CRANES were seen from Randolph Rd on Jan 7. A large flock of PINE SISKINS was at Schermann-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary on Jan 7.

New Castle County

A PURPLE FINCH and PINE SISKINS exploited the feeders at Ashland Nature Center on Jan 7.

Kent County:

On Jan 1, Bombay Hook NWR hosted 100 TUNDRA SWANS, which occupied both Raymond and Shearness Pools, and TUNDRA SWANS were seen at the refuge through Jan 4. A large flock of HORNED LARKS has been frequenting the potato field on the refuge side of the intersection of Whitehall Neck Rd and Route 9. That flock has also held LAPLAND LONGSPURS and SNOW BUNTINGS, with SNOW BUNTINGS noted there as recently as Jan 4. The Bombay Hook Christmas Bird Count (CBC) took place on Jan 4. That day, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found in an Osage orange hedgerow near the entrance to Bombay Hook, and a LONG-EARED OWL was found near Smyrna. The CBC had a VIRGINIA RAIL and EASTERN PHOEBE at the refuge’s Boardwalk Trail. A PINE WARBLER was found at the Fisher Tract that day. During the CBC, highlights from Bear Swamp included a SHORT-EARED OWL over the bayside marshes, a CACKLING GOOSE and a flyby ROSS’S GOOSE. Woodland Beach WA produced a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and RED-THROATED LOON for the CBC. An AMERICAN BITTERN was at Herring Branch that day. Birds at Finis Pool during the CBC included MERLIN and PILEATED WOODPECKER. Port Mahon had 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Jan 1, and SHORT-EARED OWLS were recorded there on the CBC as well. Other highlights for the CBC included BARRED OWL, BARN OWL, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and PINE SISKINS. On Jan 4, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER flushed from the northeast corner of Tilcom pond near Dover.

Sussex County:

On Jan 3, thousands of NORTHERN GANNETS, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a probable COMMON EIDER were seen from Indian River Inlet. On Jan 1, Indian River Inlet hosted a PURPLE SANDPIPER, 75 BONAPARTE’S GULLS, SURF and BLACK SCOTERS. That day, 2 female COMMON GOLDENEYES and 2 HORNED GREBES were seen from the trailhead to Burton’s Island. Rehoboth’s Silver Lake had a BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK on Jan 1, along with the usual contingent of CANVASBACKS. The WHISTLING-DUCK was associating with dabbling ducks on the north shore of the lake, and joined those ducks in feasting on corn offered by a homeowner. On Jan 2, two BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen at Silver Lake. On Jan 3, the Milford CBC noted a GOLDEN EAGLE and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD near Thompsonville, WESTERN SANDPIPER at Cedar Creek near Mispillion Inlet and VIRGINIA RAIL at Slaughter Beach Rd. On the day of the CBC, Milford Neck had 5 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, SEDGE WREN, BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH and LONG-EARED OWL. Highlights from the Dec 30 Seaford CBC included a REDHEAD on Hearns Pond, 3 ICELAND GULLS and 18 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at the Sussex Landfill, PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS. PINE SISKINS and PURPLE FINCHES were at Red Mill Pond on Jan 7.

Chester County:

On Jan 3, a HENSLOW’S SPARROW was found on private property during the West Chester County Christmas Bird Count, and an immature GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted over Chambers Lake that day. Other highlights from the count included CACKLING GOOSE, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, BARRED OWL, PINE WARBLER, CHIPPING SPARROW, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SNOW BUNTING, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL and PINE SISKIN, with RED CROSSBILL and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL spotted during the count week. On Jan 1, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found at Marsh Creek State Park. The CHAT was near the end of the old deteriorating paved road heading from the loop parking lot off Milford Rd to the lake. The lake itself had 6 TUNDRA SWANS and 2 HORNED GREBES.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at the Church Rd area of Green Lane Reservoir on Jan 4. An EASTERN PHOEBE was seen at Fort Washington State Park on Jan 1, seen from the creek at the railroad bridge up to the Militia Hill Hawk Watch area. A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was at the Wissahickon Watershed Area on Jan 1. A PINE SISKIN visited a feeder in Upper Hanover on Jan 2-4.

Bucks County:

On Jan 1-6, a flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS (as many as 25 birds) fed in pines at the intersection of Church View Dr and Harrisburg School Rd, which is the road to the Nockamixon State Park Marina. The area is across the street from a yard with many spruce plantings and is on the right side of the road as you head towards the marina. Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were by Nockamixon’s Fishing Pier on Jan 3. PINE SISKINS have also been seen in these areas. On Jan 5-6, a RED-NECKED GREBE was on the lake between the marina and the Tohickon Boat Access at Nockamixon State Park. Two drake REDHEADS were on Lake Nockamixon on Jan 1. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at Nockamixon in good numbers. Recent sightings from Peace Valley Park included a CACKLING GOOSE, PILEATED WOODPECKER and 2 MERLINS on Jan 3. The GAMBEL’S WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at Peace Valley has been seen regularly at the Sailor’s Point feeders.

Northampton County:

On Jan 3, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at the Koch Property, and PINE SISKINS have been seen regularly there. Another ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted just north of the intersection of Route 329 and Airport Rd on Jan 4. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was spotted from Route 329 at the Northampton/Cementon bridge on Jan 4.

Lehigh County:

Smith Lane in Alburtis had hundreds of HORNED LARKS and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Jan 2. That day, Dorney Pond had a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at Lake Muhlenberg. A CACKLING GOOSE was off Quarry Rd in Egypt on Jan 6. That day, a LONG-TAILED DUCK was on the Lehigh River upstream of the Route 329 bridge, and a REDHEAD was on Clear Spring Pond.

A GOLDEN EAGLE flew past Hawk Mountain Sanctuary on Jan 1. On Dec 29, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, RED CROSSBILL, 15 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and 200 PINE SISKINS were seen from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted over the weedy verge of Route 422 near the Barnes & Noble just outside of Reading on Jan 3, and another was seen that day on the Bernville Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Other highlights from the Bernville CBC included SHORT-EARED OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE and PINE SISKIN. On Jan 5, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at Blue Marsh National Recreation Area. Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and 40 PINE SISKINS were reported from Boyertown on Jan 4. On Jan 5, a feeder in Leesport attracted 75 PINE SISKINS and a COMMON REDPOLL, and 200 PINE SISKINS were there on Jan 7.

Lancaster County:

On Jan 1, the hill at School Lane Rd had hundreds of HORNED LARKS and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and AMERICAN PIPITS, 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS were there on Jan 2. Another LAPLAND LONGSPUR was there on Jan 5. A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 50 PINE SISKINS were spotted at Octoraro Lake on Jan 1, with the CROSSBILL heard along Spruce Grove Rd. On Jan 2, three WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and 7 PINE SISKINS were seen from Reservoir Rd off Route 897 southeast of New Holland, near the New Holland Reservoir. On Jan 5, there were 24 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS feeding in spruces surrounding a weedy area on the east side of Reservoir Rd at the New Holland Reservoir. New Holland Reservoir’s had 3 RED CROSSBILLS and 27 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Jan 6. As many as 60 CROSSBILLS were reported at Reservoir Rd that day, and possible COMMON REDPOLLS were noted in the area.

Carbon County:

On Jan 2 & 4, five to ten WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were found near the Pine Run boat launch at Beltzville State Park, and PINE SISKINS have been seen in this area as well. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at the boat launch area on Jan 4. On Jan 1, a RED CROSSBILL and 12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over an unnamed road on the south side of the lake at Beltzville State Park, and fed in spruces in that area. That day, PINE SISKINS were also seen in the area, and a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES was on the lake. A flock of SNOW BUNTINGS flew over Beltzville on Jan 1. On Jan 1-2 & Jan 4, the area around the “WC 38” gate on Penn Forest Rd at Wild Creek Reservoir had 8-40 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS actively feeding in spruces on the side of the road opposite the gate near the pullout. A BARRED OWL flew through the woods a quarter mile down the road from this site; PINE SISKINS and a MERLIN were also in the area. To reach the “WC 38” gate area, take Penn Forest Rd north from Pohopoco Dr, cross an arm of the reservoir, head past the pullout on the right there and a few tenths of a mile farther pull into the pullout on the right opposite a fence with a “WC 38” sign on it. The CROSSBILLS were ranging between those two pullouts, and PINE SISKINS have been seen in this area as well. Eight WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen from Pohopoco Dr on Jan 4; they were feeding in tall spruces right before the area where power lines cross the lake. A flock of 25 PINE SISKINS fed on the side of Lower Cherry Valley Rd on Jan 1.

On January 10, Keith Russell coordinates the Philadelphia Mid-winter Bird Census for Philadelphia County. Keith can use all the help he can get to census Philadelphia’s overwintering birds. The format is similar to a Christmas Bird Count, and teams of birders divide Philadelphia into territories for census purposes. If you can help out, please contact Keith Russell. The next meeting of the DVOC will take place at 7:30pm on Thursday Jan 8 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA and will be the Annual Members Meeting, featuring a recap of the region’s Christmas Bird Counts and an Ornithological Study by Bert Filemyr entitled, “Common and King Eider Identification Tips.” The meeting after that will take place on January 22 at the Academy, featuring "A Bird's Eye View of Wild Bird Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release" presented by Cindy Ahern.. The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
