Cape May County:

The Stone Harbor Point EARED GREBE was spotted from the municipal lot at 80th St and Ocean Ave on Jan 22. That day, the 8th St Jetty in Avalon had a KING EIDER and COMMON EIDERS. One or two SNOWY OWLS have been sitting on top of lights on the bridge from Stone Harbor Point to Nummy’s Island, with the most recent report from Jan 25. The two hours surrounding sunset have proved the best time to find these SNOWY OWLS. On Jan 35, three IPSWICH SPARROWS were at Stone Harbor Point, and 2 TRICOLORED HERONS were at Nummy’s Island. At least one RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was still being seen at 711 New England Rd through Jan 28. On Jan 23, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over Cape Island Preserve and Lincoln Ave and Cape Ave near St Mary’s Church. Ten WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over St Peter’s Church on Jan 25. Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over the Cape May Bird Observatory Center for Research and Education in Goshen on Jan 26. The hen EURASIAN WIGEON was at the Villas WMA through Jan 27, along with a drake REDHEAD, a juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, CHIPPING SPARROWS and a PINE WARBLER. Two COMMON REDPOLLS were at the Villas on Jan 24, and a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was in pines just to the left of the Villas parking lot on Jan 27. An AMERICAN BITTERN and MARSH WRENS were at Jake’s Landing on Jan 25. Jake’s Landing had 4-5 SHORT-EARED OWLS through Jan 27, and a dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK perched in a cedar at Jake’s on Jan 25 & 27. Reed’s Beach had a PINE SISKIN on Jan 25. A GLAUCOUS GULL was at the Ocean Dr fisheries plant on Jan 24. On Jan 25, an ALCID and HORNED GREBE were seen at Poverty Beach. That day, 20 SNOW BUNTINGS were on the beach at Cape May Point State Park, and a REDHEAD was on Lily Lake. A HOUSE WREN was at Harvard Ave at Cape May Point on Jan 27.

Up to 16 CRANES including SANDHILL CRANES, 1 COMMON CRANE and SANDHILL CRANE X COMMON CRANE hybrids were spotted at Husted Landing through Jan 25. On Jan 27, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen at Baypoint Rd and at the end of Back Neck Rd in Dix WMA.

A WESTERN GREBE was spotted from Manasquan Inlet on Jan 23. On Jan 26, the WESTERN GREBE was seen from both Phillips Ave and Roosevelt Ave in Deal. The GREBE was in the ocean off Neptune on Jan 27. A BLACK BRANT was in a BRANT flock on the lawns adjacent to Phillips Ave on Jan 25. On Jan 22, a female COMMON EIDER was spotted off Phillips Ave. A COMMON REDPOLL was in a stand of cottonwoods at the end of Sandy Hook’s fisherman’s trail on Jan 25. A RED-NECKED GREBE and 2 large ALCIDS were spotted from the deck opposite the Cultural Center at Monmouth Beach on Jan 25. A RED-NECKED GREBE and Harbor Seal were seen from the boardwalk in Allenhurst on Jan 25. On Jan 23, Shark River Inlet had 19 SNOW BUNTINGS and a COMMON REDPOLL. This week, sightings of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS came from Deal Lake, Belmar’s Sylvan Lake and the rocks off Clem Conover Blvd. The EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at Silver Lake in Belmar on Jan 23-24. Other species seen at the northern north shore included WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and HORNED GREBE.

Burlington County:

A pair of LONG-TAILED DUCKS and 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen on the Delaware River from Palmyra Cove Nature Center on Jan 25. That day, another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the Delaware from Riverton. Medford WMA had a flyby WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL on Jan 25. That day, Franklin Parker Preserve had a dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 3 PALM WARBLERS and 5 PINE WARBLERS.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE has been visiting a backyard feeder at 1147 Mansion Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108, which is off of Cuthbert Blvd. The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE and has been reported as recently as Jan 25. Homeowners, John and Peggy McDevit, welcome birders to come and see the TOWHEE, and request that birders knock on the door, upon arrival. If there is no answer, you can proceed softly and quietly along the driveway to view the backyard feeders. The TOWHEE has also been feeding under shrubs on the left side of the yard. Thank-you John and Peggy for your hospitality and generosity.

On Jan 27, a SNOWY OWL and 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen from the bridge to nowhere at the end of Stafford Ave, at Manahawkin Marsh. Highlights from Barnegat Lighthouse State Park included HARLEQUIN DUCKS and PURPLE SANDPIPERS. A Mink hunted from the park’s jetty on Jan 22.

The EARED GREBE at Round Valley Reservoir was seen off the north spillway on Jan 22. The EARED GREBE was near the main boat launch area on Jan 23, and the most recent report of the GREBE came from Jan 26. The Califon BARNACLE GOOSE was north of town in a field off Route 513 and across from Maple Lane on Jan 25. Califon had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Jan 28, seen between the Califon bridge and the next bridge on River Rd. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted in Annandale.

Middlesex County:

A PINE SISKIN was seen at the Labor Education Center of Rutgers University on Jan 23.

Mercer County:

On Jan 22, the pole farm at Mercer County Park NW had 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.

Warren County:

On Jan 21, the fields along Oberly Rd at the Alpha Grasslands attracted over 50 SNOW BUNTINGS and 5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and SNOW BUNTINGS were seen there through Jan 24, and LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at Alpha through Jan 23. On Jan 23, PINE SISKINS, 14 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and COMMON REDPOLLS were reported near the Richline House at Merrill Creek Reservoir, which is at Fox Farm Rd and Richline Rd. The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were still in that area on Jan 25, and PINE SISKINS were there through Jan 24.

Somerset County:

Two SANDHILL CRANES have been frequenting a field bounded by Mettlers Rd and Weston Rd, about 100 yards north of Somerset County Colonial Park. The SANDHILL CRANES have been seen from Schoolhouse Rd and Randolph Rd as well, and were reported as recently as Jan 27. Schermann-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary’s feeders attracted 50-60 PINE SISKINS on Jan 27.

New Castle County

Over 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at an undisclosed location in New Castle County on Jan 21. A PALM WARBLER was at the southern spoils area south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal on Jan 25.

A SELASPHORUS HUMMINGBIRD has been frequenting a feeder in Dover through Jan 21. SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS continued to be found in the HORNED LARK flock that has been frequenting the fields along Whitehall Neck Rd, the entrance road to Bombay Hook NWR. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and two likely GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE X CANADA GOOSE hybrids were at Bombay Hook’s Shearness Pool on Jan 26. Other highlights from Bombay Hook this week included TUNDRA SWANS, AMERICAN PIPIT and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS. Killens Pond State Park had a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH on Jan 23. On Jan 22, Little Creek WA had a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.

The BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK was at Silver Lake in Rehoboth through Jan 25.

Philadelphia County:

On Jan 27, ten WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over the West Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, about a block from Carpenter’s Woods. Those birds were heading towards the Kitchens Lane access to Fairmount Park. A pair of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS has been seen regularly at Pennypack on the Delaware.

On Jan 25-27, a LE CONTE’S SPARROW was discovered at the Darlington Tract near Wawa. To get to the Darlington Tract from the intersection of Route 1 and Route 452, go south on Route 1 for about 2 miles, and turn right onto Darlington Rd. Continue down Darlington Rd for a quarter mile to the bridge over the creek and park in the parking area just past the bridge. Head north on the trail from the parking area and follow that trail until it goes under a railroad bridge. At that point, the trail turns right and a there is a little opening in the weeds on the left. At that site, walk the field edge farthest from the road to look for the LE CONTE’S SPARROW. On Jan 26, the LE CONTE’S SPARROW was east of the green nestbox and up to and around the high hedge of multifora rose. On Jan 27, the LE CONTE’S SPARROW was closer to the road, associating with SWAMP SPARROWS in the southern area of the frozen marsh. A RED CROSSBILL flew over the Darlington Tract on Jan 26. A flock of 26 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were at the Glen Mills Golf Course and Glen Mills School in Glen Mills.

Chester County:

Three WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS fed on hemlock cones near the pond below the Chimes Tower at Longwood Gardens on Jan 23. On Jan 26, Longwood Gardens had 50 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in pines on the right side of the walkway that runs from the visitor center to the conservatory; this area is near the theatre area. On Jan 24, three SNOW BUNTINGS were in a HORNED LARK flock at Homestead Rd near Struble Lake, and 2 REDHEADS were on Chambers Lake at Hibernia County Park. Over 300 PINE SISKINS have been visiting feeders in Chadds Ford.

Montgomery County:

Two COMMON REDPOLLS appeared at a feeder in Upper Pottsgrove on Jan 24. The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Valley Forge National Historical Park were still frequenting hemlock trees in the cemetery behind Washington Memorial Chapel through Jan 23, with a high count of 20 CROSSBILLS on Jan 22. PINE SISKINS have also been seen at the cemetery. On Jan 27, five WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS fed at the top of a Norway spruce at the south end of Webb walk at Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust, and PINE SISKINS were nearby. Two CHIPPING SPARROWS were at the pond at Pennypack’s main entrance that day. On Jan 27, twenty-five WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were found at Fort Washington State Park, at an area of Wissahickon Creek that is just south of the railroad trestle. There is a church on Bethlehem Pike near this area that has conifers, and the CROSSBILLS may have come from that area. On Jan 26, four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were in red cedars near the stone bridge at Crosswicks Audubon Sanctuary in Abington Twp. On Jan 26, four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in conifers behind the house at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove, and PINE SISKINS have visited the feeders there with some regularity. A dead WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was discovered north of Clemmers Mill on the Perkiomen Creek. On Jan 23, two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen from Church Rd at Green Lane Reservoir. Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen in the northeast corner of the county on Jan 23. PINE SISKINS have been visiting the feeders of the Briar Bush Nature Center in Abington Twp through Jan 27.

Bucks County:

Peace Valley Park had a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and an ICELAND GULL on Jan 18, and 3-8 birds that may have been RED CROSSBILLS were found there on Jan 19. Other highlights from Peace Valley included LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, PINE SISKINS. Both PINE SISKINS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS still foraged in the red spruces at the intersection of Church View Dr and Harrisburg School Rd. Harrisburg School Rd is the road leading to the Nockamixon State Park Marina, and spruces are across the street from a yard with many spruce plantings on the right side of the road as you head towards the marina. The most recent report of these birds was on Jan 21. Shady Brook Farm, located at the Newtown Bypass and Stony Hill Rd, continued to host HORNED LARKS, AMERICAN PIPITS, SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS. These birds are best viewed by parking at Newtown Twp Silver Lake Park, walking across Campus Dr behind the bank and standing at the field’s edge looking toward the pumpkin patch. On Jan 24, a flock of 20 HORNED LARKS was at Franklin Lot 5 south of Ann’s Choice and Warminster Community Park. Churchville Nature Center had LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, PURPLE FINCH and PINE SISKINS this week. On Jan 23, Lower Makefield Memorial Park had PINE SISKINS at the Garden of Reflection. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was spotted in Hulmeville during a Winter Raptor Survey on Jan 25. A flock of 20 AMERICAN PIPITS was at the newly created wetland area of Core Creek Park on Jan 28.

Northampton County:

On Jan 24, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were near the little pond at Graver’s Arboretum. A flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and PINE SISKINS fed in white spruces along the driveway at the Koch Property on Jan 24. The fields along Arrowhead Rd in East Allen Twp had over 200 SNOW BUNTINGS through Jan 23. On Jan 23, ten LAPLAND LONGSPURS were counted at that site, and 12 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were there on Jan 22. An AMERICAN PIPIT was at Arrowhead Rd Jan 22-23. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK hunted near the intersection of Airport Rd and Route 329 on Jan 22. On Jan 27, the Bethlehem Landfill below Freemansburg had 25 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and an ICELAND GULL. There were 150 PINE SISKINS at feeders in Seemsville.

The AUDUBON’S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was still at Dorney Pond near 3018 Dorney Park Rd through Jan 25. The AUDUBON’S WARBLER also spent some time in the yard of 3801 Dorney Park Rd this week. The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was at Dorney Pond on Jan 25. On Jan 25, eleven WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were at a conifer patch just off Schierer Rd between Poplar Rd and Spooner Rd in SGL 205. The hen SURF SCOTER was still at Wissler Run on Jan 24. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Smith Lane in Alburtis on Jan 22. PINE SISKINS were at Rodale Park in Trexlertown on Jan 22.

Schuylkill County:

On Jan 26, twelve SNOW BUNTINGS were spotted in the Flat Hill Area near Pine Grove, and 90 SNOW BUNTINGS were at Pitman. That day, a SHORT-EARED OWL was at Mabel.

Berks County:

On Jan 22, four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen from Elverson Rd. On Jan 26, ten WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and PINE SISKINS fed in Norway spruce and Colorado blue spruce at Group Tenting Areas 12-16 on Fire Tower Rd in French Creek State Park; this area is near the Boone Trail. On Jan 22, CROSSBILLS, PINE SISKINS and a possible ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK were seen between Lake Ontelaunee and the pull-off at Kindt Corner and West Shore Dr. On Jan 27, a flock of 27 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was at SGL 180 in Blue Marsh. Three hundred PINE SISKINS were at feeders in Leesport. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were also reported from Leesport.

Lancaster County:

Tom Amico has extended an invitation for birders interested in seeing his visiting DICKCISSEL to visit his property at 1023 Penny Rd in Holtwood, PA 17532. Tom asks that interested birders come up the driveway and park behind his camper to view the feeders and nearby spruce tree that the DICKCISSEL has favored. The DICKCISSEL was reported as recently as Jan 23. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and PINE SISKINS were at the spruce and pine grove at the Reservoir Rd clearing through Jan 23. Reservoir Rd is off Route 897 southeast of New Holland, near the New Holland Reservoir. This is a Pennsylvania Game Commission Propagation Area, and all birding must be done near the road. Through Jan 25, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at the Nature Trail or near the red barn at Conestoga Pines Park off Pitney Rd, and PINE SISKINS have been in the area as well. A high count of nearly 100 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was noted at Conestoga Pines Park on Jan 25. A dozen WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were on the Conestoga River side of the intersection of River Rd and Powerhouse Rd in Safe Harbor. A small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew in to a spruce tree at the 2100 block of Oregon Pike, Lancaster. On Jan 25, a RED CROSSBILL and a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL were both seen as flyby birds at the trash dump area along City View Dr in Lancaster County Central Park, and 12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen from Golf Rd near the Meadia Heights Golf Club buildings. A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen in Ephrata. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS continue to be spotted in the area around Voganville Rd, Wissler Rd and Snapper Dr. A SNOW BUNTING was in the HORNED LARK flock at the intersection of Musser School Rd and Zeltenreich Rd on Jan 25. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and AMERICAN PIPITS were at the intersection of School Lane Rd and Route 897 on Jan 28.

On Jan 23, there were 9 RED CROSSBILLS at SGL 145, near Colebrook. The same day, Camp Kirchenwald had 18 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS; the camp is across from SGL 145. Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were at the post office in Ono on Jan 22.

On February 1, Debbie Beer will lead a DVOC field trip to Roosevelt Park in Philadelphia for winter waterfowl. The field trip will meet at the parking lot on the south side of the main lake at 9:00AM. Dress warmly and bring scopes and binoculars. There is no field trip fee, and non-members are welcome. The next meeting of the DVOC will take place at 7:30PM on Feb 5 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, the meeting will feature a program by Mary Gustafson entitled “Don’t Just Blink: Look Twice - Texas Style.” Adrian Binns will also present on Ornithological Study entitled, “Distribution of Eastern Screech-owl Morphs.” More details are available online at http://www.dvoc.org

See Life Paulagics is running winter pelagic trips in the Delaware Valley region. On the schedule are trips out of Lewes, DE on Saturday Feb 7, out of Belmar, NJ on Sunday Feb 8. This is a prime time of year for finding Dovekies, and there have already been multiple sightings both from shore and inshore waters in the region this winter, with 75 Dovekies spotted on the Jan 2 Pelagic Christmas Bird Count out of Belmar, NJ.
