Cape May County:

At least one RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was still being seen at 711 New England Rd through Feb 1. Thirteen WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in pines at Whillden Ave on Jan 31. Other sightings around Cape May Point included PURPLE SANDPIPERS, a REDHEAD and 29 SNOW BUNTINGS. The Villas WMA had a drake REDHEAD and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER through Feb 2. The hen EURASIAN WIGEON, WOOD DUCK and RUSTY BLACKBIRD flock were reported there through Jan 31. The Villas hosted WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Jan 31 & Feb 2, with 25-30 CROSSBILLS on Feb 2. On Jan 31-Feb 2, the 8th St Jetty at Avalon had 1-3 HARLEQUIN DUCKS. That jetty also had 11 COMMON EIDERS and a hen KING EIDER that were seen through Feb 1, with the EIDERS too distant for positive identification on Feb 2. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was there Feb 1-2. The dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was still at Jake’s Landing through Feb 1. An AMERICAN BITTERN and a SHORT-EARED OWL were noted at Jake’s on Dec 31. On Dec 31, a TRICOLORED HERON was at Nummy’s Island, and the immature male SNOWY OWL was at Stone Harbor Point through Feb 2. Two AMERICAN WOODCOCKS flushed from Stone Harbor Point on Feb 2. Two PINE SISKINS were at Reed’s Beach on Jan 31.

Cumberland County:

On Jan 31, three WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen from Seabreeze Rd, Bridgeton. That day, Bay Point Rd in Cedarville had 24 SNOW BUNTINGS, and AMERICAN PIPITS were there on Feb 1. Two SHORT-EARED OWLS and 10 COMMON GOLDENEYES were spotted at East Point on Jan 29.

Edwin B Forsythe NWR’s Brigantine Division had WILSON’S SNIPES on Feb 1. On Feb 1, Tuckahoe WMA had TUNDRA SWANS, 2 dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and a SHORT-EARED OWL.

Monmouth County:

A BOHEMIAN WAXWING was found in a CEDAR WAXWING flock at the back end of Sandy Hook’s Gunnison Lot (G Lot) on Feb 2. That day, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen around G Lot and a Virginia Pine Stand at the southern end of Atlantic Dr. The northern North Shore WESTERN GREBE was off Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park on Jan 31-Feb 1. The GREBE was swimming up the coast, heading towards Monmouth Beach. On Feb 2, the WESTERN GREBE was spotted a little north of Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, seen from the Monmouth Beach public beach access at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen from the Cultural Center on Feb 1. A RAZORBILL and a GLAUCOUS GULL were spotted from the boardwalk at the intersection of Cedar Ave and Ocean Place in Allenhurst on Jan 31. An ICELAND GULL was seen there the next day. A RED-NECKED GREBE was at the Belmar Marina on Jan 31. A pair of REDHEADS was on Lake Como.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE has been visiting a backyard feeder at 1147 Mansion Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108, which is off of Cuthbert Blvd. The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE and has been reported as recently as Feb 1. Homeowners, John and Peggy McDevit, welcome birders to come and see the TOWHEE, and request that birders knock on the door, upon arrival. If there is no answer, you can proceed softly and quietly along the driveway to view the backyard feeders. The TOWHEE has also been feeding under shrubs on the left side of the yard. Thank-you John and Peggy for your hospitality and generosity. A COMMON GOLDENEYE was on a pond off Mullen Dr, Sicklerville.

On Feb 2, COMMON EIDERS were seen at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Other recent sightings from Barnegat Lighthouse included HARLEQUIN DUCKS and IPSWICH SPARROW.

A CACKLING GOOSE and a SHORT-EARED OWL were at Mad Horse Creek WMA on Feb 1.

Gloucester County:

National Park had GREAT CORMORANTS, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 167 CANVASBACKS on Feb 1. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was there on Feb 2.

Hunterdon County:

The EARED GREBE at Round Valley Reservoir has been seen from the main boat launch area as recently as Feb 4. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were in that area on Feb 2 & 4. Six REDHEADS were at Round Valley on Feb 1. The RED-NECKED GREBE was at Round Valley through Feb 1. Spruce Run State Park had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Jan 31. The fields around Califon had ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS on Feb 3. That day a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was in the fields south of Route 512, and the BARNACLE GOOSE was with the goose flock in the orchard next to Melick’s Town Farm on Route 513. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was perched off Frontage Rd in Ringoes on Feb 3.

Mercer County:

On Feb 3, a flock of 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS fed in hemlocks and Norway spruces at Sayen Gardens in Hamilton. The Pole Farm at Mercer County NW had 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Jan 31, and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS on Feb 1.

Warren County:

The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were still being seen at Merrill Creek Reservoir through Jan 30, favoring the larch and nearby evergreens at the intersection of Fox Farm Rd and Richline Rd. Fourteen COMMON REDPOLLS were also seen in this area on Feb 1. Merrill Creek Reservoir had COMMON GOLDENEYE and REDHEAD through Feb 1. On Jan 31, two SNOW BUNTINGS flew over Merrill Creek. On Jan 30, two SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen from Oberly Rd at the Alpha Grasslands. Alpha had ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS through Feb 4, and LAPLAND LONGSPURS and SNOW BUNTINGS were there through Feb 1. Old Mine Rd had COMMON REDPOLLS on Feb 4.

Warren Green Acres had PINE SISKINS on Feb 1. That day, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Stahl Natural Area in Bedminster. Schermann-Hoffman had 80 PINE SISKINS and a COMMON REDPOLL at feeders outside the Nature Store window on Feb 1.

New Castle County

A flock of 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over Flint Woods on Jan 30 & Feb 2, near the intersection of Route 100 and Center Meeting Rd. On Jan 31, fifty WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen on private property near Ashland Nature Center. On Feb 2, twenty WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted in two ornamental spruces behind the private property at 113 Concord Ave in McDaniel Heights, North Wilmington. A TUNDRA SWAN was on Hoopes Reservoir on Jan 30, and a CANVASBACK was there the next day. PINE SISKINS were reported from Hockessin.

Kent County:

The SELASPHORUS HUMMINGBIRD in Dover was still present as of Jan 30, and Derek Stoner can be contacted at (302) 893-8426 to arrange visiting the HUMMINGBIRD. A flock of 15 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS fed on hemlock cones at the DNREC building in Dover on Feb 3. Woodland Beach WA had TUNDRA SWANS, AMERICAN WOODCOCK and WILSON’S SNIPE on Jan 31. Reports from Bombay Hook NWR this week included TUNDRA SWAN, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE X CANADA GOOSE hybrid, AMERICAN PIPIT, VESPER SPARROW, LINCOLN’S SPARROW and PINE SISKIN. The bay shore at Ted Harvey WA had a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and 2 ICELAND GULLS on Feb 1. PINE SISKINS visited a feeder in Felton, DE on Feb 3.

Sussex County:

The BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK was still at Rehoboth’s Silver Lake on Jan 30.

Philadelphia County:

On Jan 30, Fairmount Park had 50-60 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS; they were seen from Forbidden Trail downstream of the red covered bridge. On Jan 29, four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at Glen Foerd on the Delaware in a large hemlock near the mansion. A female SURF SCOTER was still at Pennypack on the Delaware on Jan 29. PINE SISKINS were at a feeder in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia.

Through Feb 3, the LE CONTE’S SPARROW was still being seen well at the Darlington Tract near Wawa. To get to the Darlington Tract from the intersection of Route 1 and Route 452, go south on Route 1 for about 2 miles, and turn right onto Darlington Rd. Continue down Darlington Rd for a quarter mile to the bridge over the creek and park in the parking area just past the bridge. Head north on the trail from the parking area and follow that trail until it goes under a railroad bridge. At that point, the trail turns right and a there is a little opening in the weeds on the left. At that site, walk the field edge farthest from the road to look for the LE CONTE’S SPARROW.

Chester County:

On Feb 2, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was found south of Warwick Park. The bird was found on private property that can be viewed from the road. To reach the site, take County Park Rd south from its intersection with Route 23 in Warwick. The SHRIKE was seen there perched on briars and a large sycamore. Follow County Park Rd until it ends at a T-intersection with a yield sign, then turn right and follow that road for 1.1 miles to a large stone barn with a thicket just to the right of the barn. On Feb 3, a SANDHILL CRANE was found in a field off Route 926 near the Traditions housing development in Kennett Square. The crane was later seen off Route 926 just east of North Walnut Rd and behind the clubhouse at the Kennett Square Golf Course. The next day, the SANDHILL CRANE was spotted at the effluent lagoon off Longwood Rd in Longwood Gardens and off Route 926 a mile east of Willowdale. On Feb 3, Doe Run had a GOLDEN EAGLE that was seen from Dupont Rd. Doe Run also had 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS seen from Chapel Rd and another near Route 841. Four LONG-EARED OWLS and a SHORT-EARED OWL were seen near Struble Lake. The lark flock at Pleasant View Rd included a LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Feb 2, and 4 WILSON’S SNIPES were at a nearby stream. Chambers Lake at Hibernia County Park had 2 REDHEADS through Feb 2, and a SNOW BUNTING flew over on Feb 2. On Jan 31 & Feb 1, up to 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and some PINE SISKINS were spotted in a grove of hemlocks and spruces on private property at the end of Sanatoga Rd in East Coventry Twp. On Feb 2, Crow’s Nest Preserve had seven species of woodpecker including RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER has been visiting a feeder in West Chester. PINE SISKINS were at feeders in Devon and Coatesville.

Montgomery County:

At least 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS have been seen from the Church Rd area of Green Lane Reservoir on Jan 31-Feb 2. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at the Walt Rd area of Green Lane Reservoir on Feb 1. PINE SISKINS were seen at feeders in Norristown, Green Lane and Upper Hanover.

Bucks County:

Eight WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were in the hemlocks in front of the Peace Valley Park Nature Center on Jan 29-30. Other sightings from Peace Valley included LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and PINE SISKINS. A flock of 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over Nockamixon State Park on Jan 29. A flock of 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were Tinicum Twp on Jan 31. The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at the intersection of Church View Dr and Harrisburg School Rd (the road to the Nockamixon State Park Marina) were spotted as recently as Jan 31. Two COMMON REDPOLLS were reported from private properties in Bucks County this week, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were in a yard in Warminster on Feb 1. Churchville Nature Center reported PINE SISKINS and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Maple Knoll Farm welcomed birders to visit their fields where 28 SNOW BUNTINGS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR and an AMERICAN PIPIT were seen on Jan 30. Shady Brook Farm off the Newtown Bypass had a SNOW BUNTING on Feb 1. Birds around Mud Island this week included LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, GREAT CORMORANTS and a PEREGRINE FALCON, while the Morrisville Levee area had COMMON GOLDENEYES. Falls of the Delaware Park in Lower Makefield had 6 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES and PINE SISKINS on Jan 30. A PINE WARBLER has been visiting a yard in Durham Twp. A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was on the Delaware River, seen from the Yardley Boat Ramp on Feb 1.

Northampton County:

On Feb 3, twenty WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and a PINE SISKIN were at Howertown Park just outside of Northampton. Graver’s Arboretum had 8 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in a Norway spruce by the pond near the entrance kiosk. On Feb 1, PPL Martin’s Creek had a PINE SISKIN and 2 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in a spruce on the dead end road just past the power plant. On Feb 4, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was discovered at the brushy field north of the intersection of Depues Ferry Rd and Depues Rd at PPL Martin’s Creek. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and a PURPLE FINCH were seen near the Valley View Restaurant on Feb 1. That day, a rehabilitated ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was released on the Koch Property.

Lehigh County:

The AUDUBON’S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was still at Dorney Pond through Feb 2, and was at time seen near 3801 Dorney Park Rd. The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was there through Jan 31. A hen LONG-TAILED DUCK was at Dorney Pond Jan 31-Feb 2, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were there on Feb 2. Moyer Rd near the Fogelsville Quarry had 35 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. Smith Lane in Alburtis had SNOW BUNTINGS through Feb 1.

Schuylkill County:

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was in Wayne Twp on Jan 28. On Jan 30, Sweet Arrow Lake had a COMMON RAVEN and PINE SISKINS.

The Morgantown Business Park had 5 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Jan 31; the CROSSBILLS were in hemlocks at the intersection of Timber Rd and Hemlock Rd. CROSSBILLS were at the site again on Feb 1. On Feb 3, a flock of 20-30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were at the Flying Hills community on Route 10.

Lancaster County:

Tom Amico has extended an invitation for birders interested in seeing his visiting DICKCISSEL to visit his property at 1023 Penny Rd in Holtwood, PA 17532. Tom asks that interested birders come up the driveway and park behind his camper to view the feeders and nearby spruce tree that the DICKCISSEL has favored. The DICKCISSEL was reported as recently as Jan 31. Thanks go out to Tom for his generosity and hospitality. Conestoga Pines Park continued to host 10-20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in spruces around the nature trail through Jan 30. Six REDHEADS and a RED-NECKED GREBE were on the Susquehanna River below Wrightsville on Jan 29, and the RED-NECKED GREBE and a HORNED GREBE were at that site on Feb 2. On Feb 2, a hen LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen off the Susquehanna Yacht Club. A HORNED GREBE and 108 TUNDRA SWANS were seen off the Lemon St access point on Feb 2, and Kline’s Run had a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL that day. SNOW BUNTINGS were at School Lane on Jan 29. The fields along Arrowhead Rd in East Allen Twp still hosted SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS through Feb 2, and AMERICAN PIPITS were seen there through Jan 31. If you visit Arrowhead road, please pull completely off the road while viewing the fields. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were in Douglas firs on private property in Penryn on Feb 3. A LAUGHING GULL was seen at the Tanger Outlets near Lancaster on Feb 4.

On Feb 1, the Pocono Environmental Education Center had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, COMMON RAVENS and PINE SISKINS.

PA Extralimitals:

A dark morph hawk that may have been a WESTERN RED-TAILED HAWK was spotted in Juniata County. To reach the area where the bird was found, head north on Route 75, then turn right onto Mountain Rd and drive down Mountain Rd for a half-mile. The HAWK was in a tree on the right side of the road before flying off.

On Feb 7, Colin Campbell will lead a DVOC field trip to Delaware City, New Castle County, DE. The trip will focus on the freshwater ponds in that area, and will meet at 8:00AM at Veteran’s Park, which is located at the Delaware River end of Clinton St in Delaware City. On Feb 8, Tony Croasdale will lead a DVOC field trip to Manahawkin WMA in Ocean County, NJ for winter raptors and owls. The field trip will meet at noon at the Stafford Diner at the intersection of Route 72 and Mermaid Drive, which is next to a Wawa. There is no field trip fee, and non-members are welcome. The next meeting of the DVOC will take place at 7:30PM on Feb 5 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, the meeting will feature a program by Mary Gustafson entitled “Don’t Just Blink: Look Twice - Texas Style.” Adrian Binns will also present on Ornithological Study entitled, “Distribution of Eastern Screech-owl Morphs.” More details are available online at http://www.dvoc.org

See Life Paulagics is running winter pelagic trips in the Delaware Valley region. On the schedule are trips out of Lewes, DE on Saturday Feb 7, out of Belmar, NJ on Sunday Feb 8. This is a prime time of year for finding Dovekies, and there have already been multiple sightings both from shore and inshore waters in the region this winter, with 75 Dovekies spotted on the Jan 2 Pelagic Christmas Bird Count out of Belmar, NJ. The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
