Minutes of the DVOC Meeting for March 15th, 2001
The meeting was called to order by President Ron French.
38 members and 4 guests were present.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Committee Reports:
Publications:
Jane Henderson reports that the next deadline for the next Larus is April 15th,
and it will include a pledge sheet for the bird-a-thon.
Conservation:
Jan Gordon's would have pledge sheets for the bird-a-thon at the next meeting.
Ornithological
Studies:
Chuck Hetzel reports that the Academy will be installing their new cabinets
soon, and the restoration project at the Schuylkill Center will be starting
soon.
Field
Trips:
Despite a rough day, Paul Guris' March 11th Cape May Pelagic, produced high
numbers of Razorbills and Oldsquaws, and low numbers of Gannets and Kittiwake's.
A Humpback Whale was seen breaching.
Scouting for the March 31st Mannington Marsh field trip Frank Windfelder promises
bathrooms and blackbirds, ice cream and Ruff!
Programs:
Colin Campbell announced the following program line up:
April 5th - Shawneen Finnegan: "How to REALLY look at birds".
April 19th - Alice Doolittle: "Status, Trends and Recovery efforts for the Piping Plover"
May 3rd - Nate Rice: "An avifaunal survey of the Acari Mountains in southern Guyana".
May 17th - Leo Joseph: "How DNA helps us see what we don't see when we see birds; examples from cuckoos and flycatchers".
June 7th - Pete Bacinski: "Butterflies of New Jersey".
And a reminder that fall programs will start on Sept 20th with Sam Freid.
There were no reports from Archives, Cassinia, Checklist or Website.
Announcements:
Ron
French thanked Bob Mercer for the stella job with the Book Auction. It brought
in over $400.
He also had received a letter from Chris Walters along with a check for $3,
490.41for earnings from investments in our Endowment Fund.
Sandy Sherman announced that the Bird Club of Delaware County had Pete Dunne as their speaker Wednesday.
Local Notes:
Don Jones had 17 Harlequins, 1 Snow Bunting, 1 Razorbill, 30+ Common Loons and 1 Red-throated Loon at Barnegat Light. A black morph Rough-legged Hawk was also seen at Manahawkin.
Ron French's Peace Valley owl walk produced Long-eared, Screech, Great Horned, and 3 Short -eared Owls. Also at PV, 100's of Common Merganser, and 2 Iceland Gull's.
On the 11th in his backyard, Joe Majdan played a Screech Owl tape without luck, and then tried his luck with a Saw-whet tape, and lo-and-behold a Saw-whet responded. Woodcock were also in the yard and a large flock of 60+ Turkeys were on Forest Rd including an albino Tom.
During
the March 2-4th weekend in Ontario, Bert Filemyr's group managed to sandwich
all the northern owls between a white Gyr Falcon and Grey Partridges.
Al Bilheimer reported 600 Common Mergansers, 35 Ruddy Ducks and 1000's of Grackles
at Core Creek Park.
Ward Dasey's Florence Gull workshop produced a close glaucodies w/ completely white primaries and amber eyes .(love is in the air).
Program:
The evening's program was on "Bird Songing" presented by Daniel Edelstein.
