WHISTLING-DUCK in Sussex County, DE; RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Kent County,
DE; AUDUBON’S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Lehigh County, PA and LE
CONTE’S SPARROW in Delaware County, PA.

On Feb 9, a BLACK-HEADED GULL was in a flock of 100
BONAPARTE’S GULLS by the Concrete Ship off Sunset Beach. The hen
EURASIAN WIGEON, drake REDHEAD and juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER were
seen at the Villas WMA as recently as Feb 9. A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL
was also at the Villas WMA on Feb 9. On Feb 10, three HARLEQUIN DUCKS
were at the 8th St Jetty in Avalon.

On Feb 9, a GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted at Tuckahoe and
Corbin City Wildlife Management Areas, and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and TUNDRA
SWAN were at Tuckahoe WMA.
Monmouth County:

On Feb 9, a winter-plumaged PACIFIC LOON was spotted
off Deal between Clem Conover Blvd and the Phillips Ave pier. On Feb
10, the PACIFIC LOON was spotted again from Roosevelt Ave and Phillips
Ave in Deal. On Feb 5, the WESTERN GREBE was spotted off Roosevelt Ave
in Deal. The Sandy Hook BOHEMIAN WAXWING was spotted north of the Scout
Camp on Feb 9 and at the southwest corner of Gunnison Lot on Feb 10.
On Feb 7, Sandy Hook had a hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYE on Sandy Hook
Bay off Batteries Kingman and Mills. To reach this area, park in the
median lot opposite the south maintenance area then walk north, turning
left at the gated roadway and head west to the bay. Two hen BARROW’S
GOLDENEYES were at Sandy Hook’s Kingman Battery on Feb 11, and
one was spotted from the south end of Horseshoe Cove on Feb 10, with
best views from the end of the service road at the north end of the
holly forest. On Feb 8, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was in the bushes
around Sandy Hook’s visitor center parking lot, and 20 WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS flew over the lot. On Feb 7, a RAZORBILL was spotted from
the end of Fisherman’s Trail at Sandy Hook. Other sightings from
Sandy Hook included RED-NECKED GREBE, EURASIAN WIGEON, SNOW BUNTINGS,
Harbor Seal and Gray Seal. On Feb 10, another hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYE
was photographed from Conaskonk Point in Union Beach. A RED-NECKED GREBE
was at the Belmar Marina on Feb 7-8, and a hen COMMON GOLDENEYE was
there on Feb 7. Lake Como had a REDHEAD on Feb 11. Shark River Inlet
had 40 SNOW BUNTINGS on Feb 7. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at
Deal on Feb 7. Birds seen during an “inshore pelagic” trip
out of Belmar included 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, 79 NORTHERN GANNETS, WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 3 ICELAND
GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULL, 19 RAZORBILLS, 10 COMMON MURRES and an ATLANTIC
PUFFIN that was feeding only 10 miles offshore.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was at Barnegat Lighthouse State
Park on Feb 7-9. Other highlights from Barnegat Lighthouse included
IPSWICH SPARROW, HARLEQUIN DUCKS, BLACK and SURF SCOTERS.

On Feb 5, Action Station Rd, south of Mannington Marsh,
had a ROSS’S GOOSE, an AMERICAN PIPIT and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
On Feb 5, sixty CHIPPING SPARROWS were near Shaw’s Mill Pond.
On Feb 9, Rainbow Lake had 2 REDHEADS and 8 TUNDRA SWANS.
Gloucester County:

The town of Pitman had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS near
625 Washington Ave on Feb 10. REDHEADS are still being seen at National
Park, and 250 CANVASBACKS were there on Feb 7. Wiggins Pond in Greenwich
Twp had PINE SISKINS on Feb 8. A COMMON REDPOLL and RUSTY BLACKBIRD
were at Pedricktown Marsh on Feb 7.
Hunterdon County:

The EARED GREBE at Round Valley Reservoir has been
seen from the main boat launch area as recently as Feb 7. On Feb 7,
four RED-NECKED GREBES, 4 REDHEADS, 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, a LONG-TAILED
DUCK and a PINE SISKIN were at Round Valley. On Feb 6-7, Round Valley
had LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, ICELAND GULLS and a GLAUCOUS GULL. WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were spotted in Annandale on Feb 7.

A flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS fed in hemlocks
and Norway spruces at Sayen Gardens in Hamilton through Feb 9. The Sayen
House and Gardens is at 155 Hughes Dr, Hamilton, NJ 08690. Fifteen WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS flew over Washington Crossing State Park on Feb 7.

Merrill Creek Reservoir had a RED-NECKED GREBE, CACKLING
GOOSE, 4 COMMON GOLDENEYES, GLAUCOUS GULL and PINE SISKINS on Feb 7.
That day, the Alpha Grasslands had 2 CACKLING GEESE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK,
LAPLAND LONGSPUR and SNOW BUNTINGS. Alpha had at least 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS
and 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS on Feb 6.

On Feb 6-7, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Pleasant
Plains Rd near the Great Swamp NWR heronry rookery, and a RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER was at the turnaround on Feb 7.

On Feb 6-7, a flock of 40 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
was spotted from the Shell gas station at the intersection of Possum
Park Rd and Paper Mill Rd north of Newark. In this area, there are spruces
behind the Happy Harry’s drug store and across the street from
that store in an undeveloped area that is part of White Clay Creek State
Park. It has been suggested that interested birders park at the Happy
Harry’s and searching the trees either from that side of the road
or by crossing to the other side. On Feb 7-9, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
were seen near the intersection of Papermill Rd and Thompson Station
Rd in Newark, with parking available at the Bank of America. On Feb
5, Ashland Nature Center had a BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, 2 PURPLE FINCHES
and 50 PINE SISKINS. That day, the birdwalk from Ashland gained permission
to visit a conifer grove at Barley Mill Rd that is on private land,
where 24 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were found.
Kent County:

The Selasphorus Hummingbird now identified as a female
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD is still being seen in Dover, with reports as recent
as Feb 8. Arrangements to view the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD can be made by
contacting Derek Stoner at (302) 893-8426. On Feb 6, six WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILS were seen at an alley running parallel to N State St between
Hazel Rd and Cecil St, near Silver Lake Park in Dover. On Feb 7, three
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over the park office at Killens Pond State
Park. Killens Pond State Park also had PINE WARBLERS and a RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH. Whitehall Neck Rd, the entrance road to Bombay Hook NWR, had
a LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Feb 8, and SNOW BUNTINGS were still seen in that
area as well. Other sightings from Bombay Hook NWR this week included
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, CANVASBACK and MERLIN. A SHORT-EARED OWL was spotted
from Port Mahon Rd on Feb 9.
Sussex County:

The BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK on Rehoboth’s
Silver Lake was seen through Feb 8. On Feb 7, REDHEAD was on the west
side of the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal in the University of Delaware Marine
College Campus, where Roosevelt Inlet can be viewed. On Feb 8, Prime
Hook NWR had 75,000 SNOW GEESE and TREE SWALLOWS. That day, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS
were found on Prime Hook’s Boardwalk Trail. Fowler Beach had an
ICELAND GULL on Feb 7. Highlights from Cape Henlopen State Park included
a BONAPARTE’S GULL at Herring Point, BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES at
the nature center and in the forest between the Biden Center and Herring
Point and a Gray Seal off the beach in front of the vehicle crossing
just north of the Biden Center.
A pelagic trip out of Lewes explored both DE
and MD waters. The DE waters yielded 400 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 1600
BLACK SCOTERS, 15 SURF SCOTERS, 23 NORTHERN GANNETS, 2 BONAPARTE’S
GULLS, 2 ICELAND GULLS, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 1 GLAUCOUS GULL
and 65 DOVEKIES. Highlights from nearby MD waters included 3 NORTHERN
FULMARS, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 142 DOVEKIES, 2 RAZORBILLS and 6 ATLANTIC
PUFFINS.

On Feb 9, a CACKLING GOOSE was at the ball fields
at Pennypack on the Delaware.

The LE CONTE’S SPARROW was still being
seen well at the Darlington Tract near Wawa, with reports as recent as
Feb 11. To get to the Darlington Tract from the intersection of Route
1 and Route 452, go south on Route 1 for about 2 miles, and turn right
onto Darlington Rd. Continue down Darlington Rd for a quarter mile to
the bridge over the creek and park in the parking area just past the bridge.
Head north on the trail from the parking area and follow that trail until
it goes under a railroad bridge. At that point, the trail turns right
and a there is a little opening in the weeds on the left. At that site,
walk the field edge farthest from the road to look for the LE CONTE’S
SPARROW. On Feb 11, Tyler Arboretum had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and 50
PINE SISKINS at the Green Trail’s hawk watch platform. A flock of
25 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was spotted in Media on Feb 8.
Chester County:

On Feb 7, a flock of 30 WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS was seen near the Sanatoga desilting basin on the north side
of 168 Sanatoga Rd, which dead ends at PA 724 and the Schuylkill River
in East Coventry Twp. Please only look for these birds from the road.
On Feb 6, a SNOW BUNTING was seen from Jackson School Rd.
Montgomery County:

On Feb 10, a flock of 12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
was seen from 6th St near Upper Perk Middle School in East Greenville.
At least one ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was still being seen at the Church Rd area
of Green Lane Reservoir through Feb 5. The Walt Rd area of Green Lane
Reservoir had a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on Feb 8. An AMERICAN WOODCOCK
was heard near Evansburg State Park on Feb 8. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
were spotted in Ambler. An EASTERN PHOEBE was seen near Wissahickon Creek
on Feb 6. PINE SISKINS visited feeders in Norristown and Huntingdon Valley,
and 250 SISKINS were noted at a backyard in Green Lane.

Highlights from Peace Valley Park this week included
7 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on Feb 11, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
and 2 CACKLING GEESE on Feb 6, five WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Feb 5
& Feb 8, and continuing reports of PINE SISKINS and LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS. Peace Valley had 96 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS on Feb 11. This
week, Churchville Nature Center had reports of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
and PINE SISKIN. On Feb 7, four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were in a yard
in Northampton Twp near Langhorne. A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was found in
Levittown on Feb 11

The NORTHERN SHRIKE was still at the brushy field
north of the intersection of Depues Ferry Rd and Depues Rd at PPL Martin’s
Creek. The most recent report of the SHRIKE was on Feb 7. WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were reported from Graver’s Arboretum through Feb 7.
Through Feb 6, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted from the Trolley
Station Diner at Route 512 in East Bangor. On Feb 5-6, WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were seen along Hillside Rd in Seemsville. The Valley View
Restaurant had WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on Feb 6. Fifty PINE SISKINS
fed at feeders in Bethlehem Twp, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported
from Saylorsburg. On Feb 11, COMMON GOLDENEYES were on the water at
Nazareth Quarry and a ROSS’S GOOSE was on the ice with a large
SNOW GOOSE flock. Arrowhead Rd had a LAPLAND LONGSPUR on Feb 7. The
fields at Arrowhead Rd and Locust Rd had over 100 SNOW BUNTINGS on Feb
6. On Feb 5-6, green morph PINE SISKINS were found at Jacobsburg Environmental
Education Center. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted at the Waste Management
landfill on Feb 7.

The AUDUBON’S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was still
at Dorney Pond through Feb 7, and was at time seen near 3801 Dorney
Park Rd. The Dorney Pond LONG-TAILED DUCK and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE was seen through Feb 7. On Feb 10, Grandview Cemetery on Walbert
Ave had 30 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. On Feb 7, a flock of gulls west
of the Hill-to-hill Bridge in Bethlehem had LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
On Feb 6, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen off Krause Rd between Route 309
an Memorial Drive, north of Schnecksville. On Feb 10, a ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK was seen near the intersection of Spring Creek Rd and the Route
100 bypass in Trexlertown.
Schuylkill County:

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in Pottsville and
Tuscarora State Park. West Penn Twp had 30 SNOW BUNTINGS. Sweet Arrow
Lake had a COMMON RAVEN and PINE SISKINS on Feb 11. That day WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were at Air Products and SGL 227, which had several COMMON
RAVENS also.
Berks County:

A BARRED OWL and a dead WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL were
found near Scott’s Run Lake at French Creek State Park on Feb
8. On Feb 7, a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was in a Douglas fir at a curve
on Route 419 0.3 miles south of the Sunoco Station east of Rehersburg.
The site is at a sharp curve on a heavily traveled road, so please be
careful when searching there. Blue Marsh National Recreation Area had
36 TUNDRA SWANS on Feb 10.
Lancaster County:

Tom Amico has extended an invitation for birders interested
in seeing his visiting DICKCISSEL to visit his property at 1023 Penny
Rd in Holtwood, PA 17532. Tom asks that interested birders come up the
driveway and park behind his camper to view the feeders and nearby spruce
tree that the DICKCISSEL has favored. The DICKCISSEL was reported as
recently as Feb 10. Thanks go out to Tom for his generosity and hospitality.
Conestoga Pines Park continued to host WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in a
spruce grove between a red barn and Pitney Rd through Feb 10. On Feb
10, a flock of 60-70 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was seen from River Rd
in Safe Harbor Village, Conestoga Twp. On Feb 8, seven WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS and 80 PINE SISKINS were seen from Speedwell Rd between Pumping
Station Rd and Dead End Rd, and the Speedwell Lake area had PINE SISKINS.
On Feb 8, a COMMON RAVEN was seen near the intersection of Shoeneck
Rd and Indiantown Rd near Ephrata. Highlights from the Susquehanna River
on Feb 7 included a drake WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES
that were near the Maple St Boat Ramp in Wrightsville. A flock of 20
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was at Klines Run Park on Feb 7.

On Feb 21, Martin Selzer will lead a DVOC field trip
to Indian River Inlet in Sussex County, DE. The trip will focus on winter
specialties including gulls, seabirds and waterfowl, and will stop at
Cape Henlopen, Rehoboth, Silver Lake, Prime Hook NWR and Bombay Hook
NWR on the ride north. Martin’s trip will meet at 9:00AM at the
parking lot on the north side of Indian River Inlet. Another DVOC field
trip is also scheduled for Feb 21. Steve Kacir
will lead a photography field trip to Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
(Ocean County, NJ) on Feb 21. The field trip will meet at 8:00AM at
the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park Parking Lot. There are no field trip
fees for either trip, and non-members are welcome at both. Please contact
Steve or Martin if you plan on attending. Directions, previous years’

The next meeting of the DVOC will take place at 7:30PM
on Feb 19 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, PA, the

The Delaware Valley is the name given
to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered
on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central
and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
