The Hotline will also be updated in the event any especially important rarities appear in the Delaware Valley Region such as Ivory Gull, Long-billed Murrelet, Red-footed Falcon, etc.

This spoken word version of the hotline is an abbreviated version of what's available here. Our current announcers for the RBA are Win Shafer and Cindy Ahern, though, there will doubtlessly be others who contribute in this respect. Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This week, we highlight reports of WHITE-FACED IBIS in Cape May County, NJ; MISSISSIPPI KITES and ARCTIC TERNS in Lancaster County, PA; ARCTIC TERN in Berks County, PA and SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Union County, NJ.

Cape May County:

A WHITE-FACED IBIS flew over Pond Creek Marsh at the old Magnesite Plant on May 29. In West Cape May, a WHITE-FACED IBIS was near the pond at Shunpike Rd and Stimpson Lane on May 30. A ROSEATE TERN was at the southeast corner of The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge on May 29. Two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were at the east path on June 1. Other highlights from the refuge this week included BLUE GROSBEAKS, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and PIPING PLOVERS with chicks. The Rea Farm had BLUE GROSBEAK and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. This week’s highlights from Belleplain State Forest included SUMMER TANAGERS and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. RED KNOTS were at Reed’s Beach on May 30. An ICELAND GULL was at Cook’s Beach on May 27. A PURPLE SANDPIPER was on the jetty to the left of the parking area at Stone Harbor Point on May 27. PIPING PLOVERS were nesting in the Corson’s Inlet and Ocean City area.

Cumberland County:

On June 2, a MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen from the Natural Lands Trust's Peek Preserve upstream of Mauricetown. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was at Heislerville WMA on May 29-31, and 2 BLACK-NECKED STILTS were there on May 30. Other birds at Heislerville included WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, WESTERN SANDPIPER and CASPIAN TERN. On May 30, Bevan WMA in Dividing Creek had SUMMER TANAGER, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and KENTUCKY WARBLER.

 

Atlantic County:

An AMERICAN AVOCET was at the south pool at the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR on June 1-2. Other reports from Brigantine included VIRGINIA RAIL, NORTHEN BOBWHITE, WHIMBRELS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, STILT SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPERS and RED KNOTS. Tuckerton WMA had RED KNOTS and SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS on May 29.

Monmouth County:

On May 31, Sandy Hook had three MOURNING WARBLERS: one around the rusty barn and maintenance building, another seen from the path between the boy scout parking lot and the barn, and a third MOURNING WARBLER was heard from the bike path near the road to nowhere. An ALDER FLYCATCHER was heard near the maintenance building that day. Other birds at Sandy Hook included CASPIAN TERNS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and CANADA WARBLERS.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was observed nesting on New Lisbon Developmental Center land near Franklin Parker Preserve. The Hawkins Rd area had PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and HOODED WARBLER. Wharton State Forest had COMMON NIGHTHAWKS doing their “booming” displays and calling WHIP-POOR-WILLS.

On May 31, Island Beach State Park had YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, WESTERN SANDPIPER and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER.

Salem County:

Featherbed Lane WMA had an UPLAND SANDPIPER, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS and BOBOLINKS on May 31.

Gloucester County:

In Carteret, MONK PARAKEETS were reported from High St and Washington Ave and the corner of Atlantic St and Washington Ave.

A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was north of Van Campens on the west side of Old Mine Rd near an old farmhouse with a large pull-off on May 28. That day, an ALDER FLYCATCHER was 8.1 miles north of the Fairview parking area at Old Mine Rd. Other highlights from Old Mine Rd included PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, CERULEAN WARBLERS and CANADA WARBLER. Reports from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area at the border of Warren and Sussex Counties included CERULEAN WARBLERS and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER.

Morris County:

The LAWRENCE’S WARBLER at the Elizabeth Kay Center in Chester was present through May 31, and a KENTUCKY WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER were there on May 28. A juvenile PINE SISKIN was spotted at Mountain Lakes.

Union County:

On June 1, a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was near the big pond off Saint Georges Ave at Warinanco Park in Roselle near the Linden border.

Dragon Run Park had LEAST BITTERNS & LITTLE BLUE HERONS on June 1.

Kent County:

Highlights from Bombay Hook NWR included BLACK-NECKED STILTS and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS. Three fledgling BARRED OWLS were spotted in downtown Dover.

Sussex County:

Twenty RED KNOTS and a BLACK TERN were at Cape Henlopen Point in Cape Henlopen State Park on May 31. PIPING PLOVERS were on the beach at Cape Henlopen. Abbott’s Mill Nature Center had a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER near the mill on June 3. The Morton Farm across from Abbott’s Mill had 3-4 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS that day. A SUMMER TANAGER was at the wood edge between the Morton Farm and Lindale Rd, and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was reported from the Lee Meadow power line cut. A property in Seaford still had 1-2 PINE SISKINS and a PURPLE FINCH as of May 31.

On May 29, two LEAST TERNS and 2 FORSTER’S TERNS were found at the Delaware River near the Philadelphia Airport, behind the UPS building. On May 28, 4 GLOSSY IBIS flew over the bridge near Darby Creek, and a DUNLIN was at John Heinz NWR at Tinicum. A GLOSSY IBIS flew over Route 291 on May 31.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was by the milk barn parking lot at Norristown Farm Park May 29-30, and a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was singing at the blocked-off bridge on May 30. A possible BARN OWL has been reported from Huntingdon Valley.

On May 26, two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and 2 COMMON LOONS were on Lake Galena at Peace Valley Park. Other highlights from Peace Valley this week included COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. At Bradford Dam, a MOURNING WARBLER was near the footbridge on the trail leading to Nike Park on May 31. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were at the shallow end of the lake at Bradford Dam on May 30.

Boro Park in Nazareth had over 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS through May 28

Lehigh County:

Through May 28, at least 5 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were still at Grandview Cemetery at Walbert Ave and Cedar Crest Blvd, Allentown. PINE SISKINS were still to be found in Cetronia.

An ARCTIC TERN was perched on an orange buoy marking the swimming area at Blue Marsh National Recreation Area on May 30. A LEAST BITTERN was at Peter’s Creek on May 31. The Stony Creek area of SGL 110 had a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO on May 27 & 30. COMMON RAVENS were at SGL 110 on May 30. On May 27, Lake Ontelaunee had a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and 2 DUNLINS.

Lancaster County:

On May 29 through June 1, a MISSISSIPPI KITE was at the Breezy View Overlook off Route 441 north of Route 30 in Columbia. Two or three MISSISSIPPI KITES were there on May 29. A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen from Vinegar Ferry Rd and Depot Rd near Rowenna on June 1. One to two ARCTIC TERNS were at “the Rocks” in the Susquehanna River off Blue Lane on May 29 through June 2. Another ARCTIC TERN flew past the Conejohela Flats that day. There were BLACK TERNS at “the Rocks on May 29-31. Other sightings from the Conejohela Flats included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, DUNLIN, LAUGHING GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, CASPIAN TERN, COMMON TERNS and PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS. A PINE SISKIN has been at Churchtown through June 2, and another was reported from Landisville through May 31.

Lebanon County:

The power line cut off Pinch Rd had an ALDER FLYCATCHER on May 29.

Carbon County:

On May 27, SGL 129 had 2 ALDER FLYCATCHERS. On May 31, a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was near the parking area for the Hatchery Rd power line cut in Penn Twp.

Monroe County:

No reports

Pike County:

A MOURNING WARBLER was at Promised Land State Park on May 30. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK and ALDER FLYCATCHERS were there on June 2. On June 2, the power line cut near Highline Rd and DCNR management area with removed trees in Delaware State Forest had 10 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, 2 BREWSTER’S WARBLERS, CANADA WARBLERS and a HORNED LARK.

Wayne County:

On June 6, Steve Kacir will lead a DVOC field trip to Wharton State Forest for displaying nighthawks and calling Whip-poor-wills. The trip will meet at the Carranza Memorial at 6:00PM. Please contact Steve if you plan on attending. On June 10, Bob Horton will lead a DVOC field trip to Lakehurst Naval Air Station for Upland Sandpipers, Grasshopper Sparrow and Vesper Sparrow. This trip will meet at the Chapel of the Air parking lot at Lakehurst at 7:00AM. Due to the nature of this trip, all participants will need a valid driver’s license or picture ID, and attendees must register with Bob in advance. Additional information about these field trips along with contact information for the trip leaders can be found on the DVOC website: http://www.dvoc.org

The next meeting of the DVOC is on June 4, 2009 at 7:30pm at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, when Frank Windfelder will present “Trans-Pecos Birding.” The meeting after that will be an informal meeting at the Palmyra Cove Nature Center on July 2, featuring short programs by Frank Windfelder and Debbie Beer. What is the Delaware Valley?

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
