Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service
provided by the joint efforts of the Academy
of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware
Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware
Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
This week, we highlight reports of AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN
in New Castle County, DE; ROSEATE SPOONBILLS in New Castle County, DE
& Atlantic County, NJ and WHITE-WINGED DOVE in Kent County, DE.

Cape May County:

A GREATER SHEARWATER appeared at the rips off Cape
May Point on July 19. A SANDWICH TERN, a BLACK TERN and 2 BROWN PELICANS
were at the rips on July 16. On July 18, two ROSEATE TERNS were on the
beach between the St Mary’s jetty and Whilldin Ave. On July 20,
a WILSON’S STORM-PETREL and GREATER SHEARWATER were spotted from
the second dune crossover at Cape May Point State Park. A NELSON’S
GULL (GLAUCOUS GULL X HERRING GULL hybrid) was at the second Plover
Pond on July 19. Other sightings from Cape May Point State Park included
BROWN PELICANS, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, PIPING PLOVERS, WESTERN WILLETS,
BANK SWALLOW, BLUE GROSBEAKS and BOBOLINKS. On July 20, an UPLAND SANDPIPER
flew over the parking lot at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Cape May Migratory
Bird Refuge, and a BLACK SCOTER was at the refuge beach on July 17 &
20. Other birds at the refuge included LEAST BITTERN, PIPING PLOVERS,
WHIMBREL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, BANK SWALLOWS and BOBOLINKS. A
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was at Norbury’s Landing on July 19. WESTERN
WILLETS and WESTERN SANDPIPERS flew past Alexander Ave on July 19. A
WORM-EATING WARBLER and BOBOLINKS migrated through Higbee Beach WMA
on July 19.

A ROSEATE SPOONBILL was at the Brigantine Division
of Edwin B Forsythe NWR. The SPOONBILL was an eighth of a mile down
from signpost #10, at an inlet on the right side of the road that day.
The SPOONBILL was seen again on July 21, when it was in the east pool
and seen from the north dike just before the dogleg. Other birds spotted
at Brigantine included NORTHERN BOBWHITES, TRICOLORED HERONS, GULL-BILLED
TERNS and BLUE GROSBEAKS. On July 21, a juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON
was in a vacant lot off Osborne Ave in Margate. CASPIAN TERNS were at
Malibu Beach WMA.

On July 19, five BROWN PELICANS flew past the Atlantic
Highlands seawall.

SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were at Great
Bay Blvd WMA. Up to five American Minks have been seen on the jetty at
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park.

An UPLAND SANDPIPER was at the east end of Olivet
Rd at the Johnson Sod Farm on July 16.

Two CASPIAN TERNS were at Spruce Run Reservoir on
July 21. That day, four CASPIAN TERNS were at Round Valley Reservoir’s
swimming beach.

A CASPIAN TERN was at Merrill Creek Reservoir on July
19. That day, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was at Oberly Rd in the Alpha Grasslands.

New Castle County

A ROSEATE SPOONBILL was at the Thousand Acre Marsh
July 16-18, seen from the base of the Reedy Point Bridge. Up to 2 AMERICAN
WHITE PELICANS have also been seen in the same area through July 20.
Other birds at the Thousand Acre Marsh included CASPIAN TERNS, LITTLE
BLUE HERONS, RUDDY DUCKS and the resident PEREGRINE FALCONS. A WORM-EATING
WARBLER was at Brandywine Creek State Park on July 19. Other birds at
Brandywine Creek included WILLOW FLYCATCHER, NORTHERN PARULA, LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. A LITTLE BLUE HERON was at Lums
Pond State Park on July 16.

On July 18, a WHITE-WINGED DOVE flushed from the side
of Route 9, a half mile south of its intersection with Route 6 near
Woodland Beach WA. That day, a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was at Taylor’s
Gut in Woodland Beach WA. BANK SWALLOWS were spotted at Woodland Beach.
Five BALD EAGLES, 100 AMERICAN AVOCETS and 12 BLACK-NECKED STILTS were
at Raymond Pool in Bombay Hook NWR on July 18. Other birds at Bombay
Hook included YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, WESTERN
SANDPIPERS, BLUE GROSBEAKS and BOBOLINK. During the Dover antique car
show at Dover Air Force Base’s Air Mobility Command Museum, two
UPLAND SANDPIPERS were spotted crossing the tarmac.

On July 18, STILT SANDPIPERS and GULL-BILLED TERNS
were seen at Prime Hook Rd in Prime Hook NWR. That day, Prime Hook’s
Fowler Beach had a BONAPARTE’S GULL. The best habitat for shorebirds
at Prime Hook that day was Broadkill Rd, which had a HUDSONIAN GODWIT
and WESTERN SANDPIPER.

An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was at LaSalle Pond
on July 16. Reports from Churchville Nature Center included GREAT EGRET,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, PINE WARBLER and BANK SWALLOW.

On July 18, SGL 106 had 2 ALDER FLYCATCHERS, a variant
BREWSTER’S WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, HOODED WARBLERS and YELLOW-BREASTED
CHAT. On July 19, SGL 110 had a RUFFED GROUSE, WILD TURKEY, 2 PURPLE
MARTINS, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and a Timber Rattlesnake.
Lancaster County:

On July 15, fourteen BALD EAGLES were at the Conejohela
Flats. On July 20, the Flats had 120 KILLDEER, 100 LEAST SANDPIPERS.
Other sightings from the Conejohela Flats included FORSTER’S TERNS,
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS
and SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. A kayak trip down the Conestoga River between
Brownstown and Lancaster County Central Park revealed an immature YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. On July 19, Octoraro Lake had
BANK SWALLOWS, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and 2 GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS.

Monroe County:
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW sang at The Nature Conservancy
Hauser Nature Center on July 19. Sightings from the Long Pond and Pocono
Lake area included PURPLE FINCH, PILEATED WOODPECKERS, BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, PURPLE MARTIN, CLIFF SWALLOWS, BROWN CREEPERS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES,
BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS,
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLER, DARK-EYED
JUNCOS. A female PURPLE FINCH appeared at a feeder in Saylorsburg.
Pike County:
On July 9, WHIP-POOR-WILLS called from High Line Rd,
and two were seen on the road.
Wayne County:

On July 25, Steve
Kacir will lead a DVOC photography field trip to Stone Harbor Point
and Cape May Point. The trip will focus on photographing shorebirds, gulls,
terns and other species in Cape May County. The trip will meet at the
Stone Harbor Point parking lot at 6:30AM, and will thoroughly explore
photographic opportunities around Stone Harbor Point before moving to
other locations. Please contact Steve by email if you plan on attending.

The next meeting of the DVOC is on Aug 6, 2009. This
is an informal meeting at the Palmyra Cove Nature Center, featuring short
programs by Mick Jeitner and Tom Bailey.
