Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This week, we highlight reports of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS in New Castle County, DE; ROSEATE SPOONBILLS in Atlantic County, NJ and New Castle & Kent Counties, DE; BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK in Cape May County, NJ and CURLEW SANDPIPER in Kent County, DE.

Cape May County:

A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK flew over The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge and Cape May Point State Park on July 25. Later that day, the BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK settled in at the Lighthouse Pond at Cape May Point State Park. On July 26, a BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK was spotted on a lamppost off the Garden State Parkway over the Mullica River, possibly the same bird that was reported from the State Park and the TNC refuge. Whether this is an escape or wild vagrant has been debated on the Cape May Bird Observatory blog at http://www.birdcapemay.org/blog/

A BLACK TERN flew over TNC Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge on July 27. Three COMMON MOORHENS were there on July 24, and four MOORHENS were reported on July 28. The BLACK SCOTER was seen on the refuge beach through July 25. Other birds spotted at refuge included BROWN PELICANS, CATTLE EGRETS, PIPING PLOVERS, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, WESTERN WILLETS, BANK SWALLOWS, BLUE GROSBEAK and BOBOLINKS. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and WORM-EATING WARBLER were at Cape May Point State Park on July 28. Other birds reported from the state park included AMERICAN BITTERN, PIPING PLOVERS, WESTERN SANDPIPERS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, BANK SWALLOWS, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. On July 25, two BLACK TERNS were spotted from the St Peters Jetty. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was at Higbee Beach WMA on July 28. Other sightings from Higbee Beach included WESTERN SANDPIPER, BLUE GROSBEAKS, WORM-EATING WARBLERS and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. On July 26, five WILD TURKEYS were at New England Rd opposite Hidden Valley Ranch. A SANDWICH TERN made a brief appearance at Norbury’s Landing on July 22. Stone Harbor Point had BROWN PELICANS, PIPING PLOVERS, WHIMBREL, WESTERN WILLETS, WESTERN SANDPIPERS and ROYAL TERNS. Nummy Island had WESTERN WILLETS and YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. A TRICOLORED HERON and RUDDY TURNSTONES were at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor on July 25. A tuna fishing trip off Avalon encountered COMMON LOONS, WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS, 10 CORY’S SHEARWATERS, 2 GREATER SHEARWATERS and 2 AUDUBON’S SHEAWATERS.

The ROSEATE SPOONBILL at the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR was seen from the south dike on July 26; the SPOONBILL was in the east pool on July 24 & 27. The most recent report of the Brigantine SPOONBILL was on July 28. Three BLACK TERNS and 2-3 AMERICAN AVOCETS were at Brigantine on July 28. A MARBLED GODWIT was at Brigantine’s east pool on July 26. A BARN OWL called from the wood’s edge near the end of the wildlife auto-loop on July 22. That evening, CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOWS and WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard in the woods as well. Other sightings from Brigantine included SNOW GEESE, NORTHERN BOBWHITES, WHIMBRELS, STILT SANDPIPER, WESTERN SANDPIPERS, CASPIAN TERNS and SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW.

A BLACK SCOTER was on the beach at Sandy Hook’s False Hook on July 24. PIPING PLOVERS and their chicks were on the beach at the end of Sandy Hook’s Fisherman’s Trail.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was at Crow’s Woods in Haddonfield on July 27.

New Castle County

The ROSEATE SPOONBILL was at the Thousand Acre Marsh on July 22. The pair of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS was at the Thousand Acre Marsh on July 22, 25 & 28. A PINE SISKIN was at a Newark feeder on July 24. Two CLIFF SWALLOWS were still at the nest site in Augustine WA.

Kent County:

A ROSEATE SPOONBILL was sleeping at the south end of Raymond Pool at Bombay Hook NWR on July 26 & 28. A report from Bombay Hook’s sighting log noted a ROSEATE SPOONBILL at Shearness Pool on July 20. Two juvenile VIRGINIA RAILS and a LEAST BITTERN were at Bear Swamp on July 25, and the VIRGINIA RAILS were there again on July 28. Other sightings from Bombay Hook included YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, SNOW GOOSE, over 200 AMERICAN AVOCETS, up to 73 BLACK-NECKED STILTS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, STILT SANDPIPERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and GULL-BILLED TERN. A Reeve, which is a female RUFF, was seen at Taylor’s Gut in Woodland Beach WA July 25-28. The REEVE has been reported from a few locations around Taylor’s Gut. These included the north end of Taylor’s Gut, the area near the water control structure north of the observation tower at Taylor’s Gut and near the road, about 100 yards from the gravel pull-off. A winter-plumaged CURLEW SANDPIPER was at Taylor’s Gut on July 23-24. Other birds at Taylors Gut included WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and GULL-BILLED TERN. On July 26, Killens Pond State Park had CASPIAN TERN, PILEATED WOODPECKER, ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. On July 28, BANK SWALLOWS and 3 CLIFF SWALLOWS were seen from Route 6 west of Route 9.

Sussex County:

Slaughter Beach had WESTERN SANDPIPERS and GULL-BILLED TERNS. Two BLACK-NECKED STILTS were at Gordon’s Pond in Cape Henlopen State Park on July 23. A kayak trip out from Savage Ditch Rd revealed a MARBLED GODWIT and BROWN PELICANS on July 27

On July 26, a HOODED WARBLER was heard near the Wissahickon Creek at Fairmount Park.

On July 24, Chambers Lake had a LITTLE BLUE HERON and 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. A pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS visited a feeder in Willistown on July 25.

PURPLE MARTINS were at Green Lane Reservoir. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was at Riverbend Environmental Education Center.

On July 25, highlights from Peace Valley Park included CASPIAN TERNS, PURPLE MARTINS, OVENBIRD and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. Churchville Nature Center had a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and 3 LITTLE BLUE HERONS on July 25. Bradford Dam had WILLOW FLYCATCHERS.

PURPLE MARTINS were spotted from Hillside Rd in East Allen Twp.

A BLUE GROSBEAK and WILLOW FLYCATCHER were in the fields of the Dry Brooks Boat Launch along Palisades Rd at Blue Marsh National Recreation Area on July 22. Three BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Blue Marsh on July 24. On July 22, birds at SGL 106 included an ALDER FLYCATCHER, PRAIRIE WARBLER, HOODED WARBLERS and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. Seven BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Lake Ontelaunee on July 24. The eastern portion of SGL 110 had a HOODED WARBLER on July 25. A Schuylkill River kayak trip from Birdsboro to Pottstown noted SNOWY EGRETS and BANK SWALLOWS.

A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was on Gull Island at the Conejohela Flats on July 29. On July 22, the Conejohela Flats had 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, CASPIAN TERNS, FORSTER’S TERNS, BANK SWALLOWS and PURPLE MARTINS. On July 28, the flats had a LITTLE BLUE HERON, CASPIAN TERN, FORSTER’S TERNS and nine species of shorebirds, including 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. On July 25, a small pond off Junction Rd in Manheim had a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and LEAST SANDPIPERS. That day, two BLUE GROSBEAKS were at land set aside by the Manheim Auto Auction north of the intersection of Auction Rd and Junction Rd.

The SANDHILL CRANE was at the location of the old Colebrook ice dam at Lake Duffy in SGL 145 on July 19.

On July 24, a property in Kunkletown had breeding CLIFF SWALLOWS and a calling RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.

Pike County:

A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flew over Milford on July 26.

On July 25, Steve Kacir will lead a DVOC photography field trip to Stone Harbor Point and Cape May Point. The trip will focus on photographing shorebirds, gulls, terns and other species in Cape May County. The trip will meet at the Stone Harbor Point parking lot at 6:30AM, and will thoroughly explore photographic opportunities around Stone Harbor Point before moving to other locations. The next meeting of the DVOC is on Aug 6, 2009. This is an informal meeting at the Palmyra Cove Nature Center, featuring short programs by Mick Jeitner & Tom Bailey. The DVOC potluck picnic will be on Aug 1 at Jan Gordon’s house. Details are on the website; nonmembers and guests are always welcome.

See Life Paulagics is running a pelagic trip out of Belmar, NJ on Aug 9 and another out of Lewes, DE on Aug 16. An overnight pelagic out of Lewes, DE is scheduled for Aug 20 as well. The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
