Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service
provided by the joint efforts of the Academy
of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware
Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware
Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
I'm Michael Lyman filling in for the vacationing Steve
Kacir and I will be your guide for birding in the Greater Philadelphia
Region. This week, we highlight reports of Brown Pelican in Lancaster
County Pennsylvania and Reeve in Kent County Delaware.

Cape May County:

On August 3, observers at Cape May Point had a summer
plumage AMERICAN AVOCET fly pass them headed towards Cape May lighthouse.
Also seen in the area were a handful of shorebirds including LEAST SANDPIPER,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, two SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, KILLDEER and 3 PIPING PLOVER chicks.
At the Meadows, on August 3, two BROWN PELICANS and
three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were on the beach, BELTED KINGFISHER
and CATTLE EGRET flew over impoundment, the latter settling into a shrub
in the center of the impoundment.
On August 4, a CLIFF SWALLOW was in with a large group
of BARN and TREE SWALLOWS, along with a few BANK SWALLOWS. A ROYAL TERN
was seen flying past the area, and a pair of ROYAL TERNS along with
BLACK SKIMMERS were seen flying over the central pool. Also this day,
flyover LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH and BOBOLINK, RUDDY TURNSTONES and SANDERLINGS
on the beach and WILSON'S STORM ?
PETREL and BLACK TERN over the ocean.
At the Cape May State park, birders had NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH
on August 4 On August 3, high tides from the previous week were noted
to have severely effected the LEAST TERN nesting colony with only a
few chicks remaining; on a brighter note two PIPING PLOVER pairs with
two chicks estimated to fledge anytime between August 9 through 21 were
also noted this day. July 30 highlights included AMERICAN KESTREL flying
along the beach, 6 WHIMBRELS flying low across the bay, two PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS and GULL- BILLED TERN
On August 5 on a beach in South Cape May, an observer
recorded SANDWHICH TERN, ROSEATE TERN and several hundred COMMON TERN.
Stone Harbor Point on August 3, held over seventy
five ROYAL TERNS roosting with the local gulls and terns. On the beach
this day, observers had over 100 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS with a similar
number of SANDERLINGS, a few PIPING PLOVERS and WESTERN and SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS mixed in. High waters in the area reportedly washed out the
large colony of BLACK SKIMMERS, they have been reported to move up the
coast to Seaview Harbor near Longport.

Cumberland County:

Johnson Sod Farm held UPLAND SANDPIPER on both August
1 and 2, with a high count of 10 birds seen from Griers Lane on August
2.
The only other birds reported from the area were LAUGHING GULL and KILLDEER.
On August 3, Bivalve held thousands of shorebirds
including two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS by the High Street area along
with an estimated 6,500 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.

Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge had sightings
of the continuing ROSEATE SPOONBILL up to August 4. Reliable spots to
look for it include the east (Danzenbaker) pool and the south dike road,
just after marker #6.
August 4 near Gull Pond observation tower, a bold
VIRGINIA RAIL walked out into the open road, began a wings-out, "shrugged
shoulders" display, while calling and loudly grunting.

On August 2, in the pine barrens of Wharton State
Forest an observer heard three HERMIT THRUSH singing a full song. They
also had BROWN CREEPER and PURPLE MARTINS flying overhead.

On August 5, observers birding Great Bay Boulevard
NWR in Tuckerton NJ recorded 12 species of shorebird including SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILLET,WHIMBREL, RUDDY TURNSTONE, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER,
LEAST SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER AND LONG- BILLED DOWITCHER

On August 1 an observer in South Amboy reported a
lone BONAPARTE'S GULL, along with many BLACK SKIMMERS, LAUGHING GULL
and COMMON TERN.

In Assunpink, at the air navigation beacon on August
1,an observer noted good numbers of BLUE GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING and
FIELD SPARROW. Also seen were 2 AMERICAN KESTREL and a CLIFF SWALLOW
mixed in with BARN and TREE SWALLOWS.

At Mill Creek Marsh, on August 1, an hour before high
tide an observer had a large numbers of shorebirds, amongst them included
an estimated 800 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, STILT SANDPIPER and PECTORAL
SANDPIPER. In addition 5 species of waders seen including GREAT EGRET,
GREAT BLUE HERON, SNOWY EGRET, BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERON and GREEN HERON.

New Castle County

On August 1, Thousand Acre Marsh held the continuing
AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS but alas no signs of the ROSEATE SPOONBILL.
On August 3, an observer reported 116 CASPIAN TERNS and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
from this area.

August 5 at Bombay Hook birders noted 2 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS flying north on the bay side of the dike by Shearness Pool.
On August 3, by the potato fields on route 9 approximately 0.5 mile
south of Bombay Hook, an observer viewed an UPLAND SANDPIPER and
7 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
On August 2, Birders at Ted Harvey NWR had a near
alternate BLACK TERN cruising around the impoundment.
At the DuPont Nature Center in Mispillion Light observers had MARBLED
GODWIT on both August 2 and 3 near the breakwater. On August 2 shorebirds
also noted here were 9 RED KNOT, 85 RUDDY TURNSTONE and 145 SANDERLING.
The REEVE (female RUFF) continues this week
last reported August 3 at Taylor's Gut, it seems to favor the North
side of the impoundment. Taylor's Gut is located along Rt. 9, across
from Woodland Beach Wildlife Area, north of the intersection of Rt 6
and 9, east of Smyrna. Also here this day was reported a Western WILLET

On August 4, observers viewed the continuing BLACK-BELLIED
WHISTLING DUCK at Silver Lake on Lake drive sitting on the short grass
with MALLARDS and BLACK DUCKS.

On August 3 along the Wisshahickon an observer had
his first fall migrant a CANADA WARBLER, also here this day were 2 PILIATED
WOODPECKERS

feeder this week.

On August 4 an observer had 10 COMMON MERGANSERS and
3 WOOD DUCK at the Church road location of Green Lane Park. Observer
noted water level being extremely high and no shorebird habitat about.

On August 4 around East Bangor Dam BLACK- CROWNED
NIGHT HERON, MERLIN and HOODED MERGANSER were reported.
One COMMON RAVEN was reported in the Bethlehem area.
BLUE GROSBEAKS were reported along numerous locations
in East Allen Township on August 1 including from Innovation Way and
Gwenmawr Road.
BLUE GROSBEAKS were also reported at the Lehigh Gap
Nature Center during this past week.

On August 1 a birder who has been birding the Conjohela
Flats for over 34 years had a new species in the form of A juvenile
YELLOW- CROWNED NIGHT HERON. Also seen this day were SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER AND PECTORAL
SANDPIPER.
On the evening of August 2, observers had a very rare
Pennsylvania record of BROWN PELICAN on the Susquehanna River near the
village of Peach Bottom.

On July 25, Steve
Kacir will lead a DVOC photography field trip to Stone Harbor Point
and Cape May Point. The trip will focus on photographing shorebirds, gulls,
terns and other species in Cape May County. The trip will meet at the
Stone Harbor Point parking lot at 6:30AM, and will thoroughly explore
photographic opportunities around Stone Harbor Point before moving to

See Life Paulagics is running a pelagic trip out
of Belmar, NJ on Aug 9 and another out of Lewes, DE on Aug 16. An overnight
pelagic out of Lewes, DE is scheduled for Aug 20 as well. These trips
offer great opportunities to search for White-faced Storm-petrel. More
