Cape May County:

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was near the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park on Aug 31; the SHRIKE was northeast of the hawk watch on Sep 1. A FRANKLIN’S GULL was at the second dune crossover at the state park on Aug 31. A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was at the third Plover Pond at the State Park on Aug 27-28. A ROSEATE TERN and SANDWICH TERN were spotted from Cape May Point on Aug 29. Other birds around the point included BROWN PELICANS, WESTERN WILLET and BLACK TERNS. A RUFF flew in to the impoundments at Higbee Beach WMA on Aug 28, and two AMERICAN AVOCETS were there on Aug 26. A MOURNING WARBLER was at Higbee on Aug 31. An ALDER FLYCATCHER flew by Higbee on Aug 31. CAPE MAY WARBLERS were spotted at Higbee on Aug 30-Sep 2. The Morning Flight Project at Higbee noted DICKCISSELS on Aug 30 & Sep 1. Higbee had a CERULEAN WARBLER on Sep 1. Other Higbee highlights this week included BROAD-WINGED HAWK, MERLIN, STILT SANDPIPERS, WESTERN SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, WHIMBREL, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, BANK SWALLOW, NASHVILLE WARBLERS, TENNESSEE WARBLERS, CANADA WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLERS and BLUE GROSBEAKS. A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge on Aug 29-30. The refuge had COMMON MOORHENS and BLACK TERNS on Aug 30, and a LARK SPARROW was near the refuge’s dune crossover on the west path on Aug 27. A SORA and COMMON MOORHEN were at the refuge on Aug 31. Other birds at the TNC Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge included WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and BLUE GROSBEAKS. The BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was on a small grassy island right past the bridge on the west path.

At the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR, the ROSEATE SPOONBILL was seen as recently as Sep 1. This week the SPOONBILL was reported from the southwest pool, the east side of the West Pool and Danzenbaker Pool. Those who saw the SPOONBILL at Danzenbaker Pool reported the bird from the northeast corner or the south side of the pool. On Aug 31, Brigantine had 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, over 100 RED KNOTS, 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and 3 WILSON’S PHALAROPES. A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was at the west pool on Sep 1. Over 300 RED KNOTS and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT were at the refuge on Aug 30. On Aug 29, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT was at the southwest corner of the West Pool, and two more HUDSONIAN GODWITS were at the center of the northwest pool and. Other shorebirds at the refuge that day included 2 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 2 WILSON’S PHALAROPES, MARBLED GODWIT, RED KNOT, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and 4 AMERICAN AVOCETS. On Aug 29, a SORA was at the southwest pool. On Aug 28, two BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were on mud flats on the south side of the first leg of the driving tour, and a juvenile BAIRD’S SANDPIPER was at the northwest corner of the West Pool. That day, two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were at the northeast corner of Danzenbaker Pool. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and 4 AMERICAN AVOCETS were at the dogleg on Aug 28; the AVOCETS also spent some time at the west pool. That day, Danzenbaker Pool had 2 MARBLED GODWITS, 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER. On Aug 27, Brigantine had an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and a WILSON’S PHALAROPE. On Aug 26 two AMERICAN AVOCETS were at the southwest pool. Other sightings from Brigantine included AMERICAN BITTERN, TRICOLORED HERON, NORTHERN BOBWHITES, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, WHIMBREL, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, STILT SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, WESTERN SANDPIPER, ROYAL TERNS, CASPIAN TERNS, BLACK TERNS, BLUE GROSBEAKS and SALTMARSH SPARROWS. On Aug 31, Absecon Inlet and Brigantine Island had a MARBLED GODWIT and over 30 WESTERN WILLETS.

A LARK SPARROW was spotted from Fisherman’s Trail at Sandy Hook on Aug 30, and a LARK SPARROW was at the rusty barn on Aug 31. On Aug 30, the tidal cut east of the end of Fisherman’s Trail had PIPING PLOVERS, WESTERN WILLET and 3 RED KNOTS. Other reports from Sandy Hook included BROAD-WINGED HAWK.

On Aug 30, Palmyra Cove Nature Park had a LEAST FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, CANADA WARBLER and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS. A BLUE GROSBEAK was reported from Franklin Parker Preserve.

On Aug 31, Johnson Sod Farm had BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and BOBOLINKS. That day, 2 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were at a flooded field off Olivet Rd east of Johnson Sod Farm. Two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were at East Coast Sod Farm (formerly DeLea Sod Farm) near Route 40.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Greenwich Twp on Aug 27. Riverwinds had a SWAINSON’S THRUSH on Sep 1. That day, a MOURNING WARBLER was at the northwest corner of the National Park dredge spoils.

Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and a WINTER WREN were at the Glenhurst Meadows aka Warren Green Acres on Aug 27. The Raccoon Ridge Hawk Watch reported BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, MERLINS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, COMMON RAVENS, BANK SWALLOWS, Timber Rattlesnake, Five-lined Skink and Black Bear this week. Highlights from the Scott’s Mountain Hawk Watch included BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and CASPIAN TERN.

On Aug 30, twenty-eight COMMON NIGHTHAWKS and a BROAD-WINGED HAWK were spotted from the Wildcat Ridge Hawk Watch near Splitrock Reservoir. A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was at the Troy Meadows on Aug 26.

NJ Extralimitals:

A SNOWY OWL was at Caven Point at Liberty State Park on Aug 30. A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was at Wallkill NWR in Sussex County on Aug 27-Sep 1

New Castle County

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO and CANADA WARBLERS were at the Ashland Nature Center on Aug 31. The Ashland Nature Center Hawk Watch reported BROAD-WINGED HAWKS this week. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew over Newark and White Clay Creek State Park. A probable YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was spotted at the Hillside Mill Cove area of Hoope’s Reservoir on Aug 30. LITTLE BLUE HERONS were at the Route 82 causeway. On Sep 1, a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was at the small wooden bridge north of the swamp on the river trail at Brandywine Creek State Park. That day, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard at the park near Thompsons Bridge Rd. Other birds at Brandywine Creek State Park included LEAST FLYCATCHER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER.

Two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and 2 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were at Cartanza Rd on Aug 29. Cartanza Rd had AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on Aug 30. Two SNOW GEESE were spotted near Cartanza Rd on Sep 1. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT, STILT SANDPIPER and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were in a flooded field on the south side of Port Mahon Rd on Aug 27. The GODWIT and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were still there on Aug 30. BOBOLINKS were reported from Cartanza Rd and Port Mahon. Ted Harvey WA had BLACK TERNS on Aug 30. Highlights from Bombay Hook NWR included AMERICAN AVOCETS.

Sussex County:

On Aug 27, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was at Broadkill Rd at Prime Hook NWR. A WILSON’S PHALAROPE, STILT SANDPIPERS and BLACK-NECKED STILTS were there on Aug 30. A possible SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER or hybrid sandpiper was at Broadkill Rd on Aug 31 along with 5 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 4 WILSON’S PHALAROPES. A SEDGE WREN sang from Broadkill Rd on Aug 31. Other birds at Prime Hook included TRICOLORED HERON, WESTERN SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen near the road on DE-16 just west of DE-1. The Cape Henlopen State Park Hawk Watch reported PEREGRINE FALCON, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and BLUE GROSBEAKS.

An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was at the Bridle Trail at Ridley Creek State Park on Aug 30. The Rose Tree Park Hawk Watch noted BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and MERLIN this week.

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE has been spotted around the Militia Hill Hawk Watch at Fort Washington State Park Aug 27-Sep 2. Other birds spotted from the Militia Hill Hawk Watch included BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and COMMON NIGHTHAWKS.

On Aug 30, Peace Valley Park had BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and CANADA WARBLER. Churchville Nature Center had a SNOW GOOSE, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER on Aug 29. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve had YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and CANADA WARBLER on Aug 29. Churchville Nature Center and Falls of the Delaware Park had CANADA WARBLERS. Three LITTLE BLUE HERONS were at Core Creek Park on Sep 1.

This week, the Bake Oven Knob Hawk Watch reported BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, COMMON RAVENS, CLIFF SWALLOWS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS and TENNESSEE WARBLER.

OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary on Aug 30 and Sep 1. The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Hawk Watch also reported BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, MERLINS, PEREGRINE FALCONS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER. On Aug 31, SGL 110 (both Berks and Schuylkill Counties) had COMMON RAVENS, 4 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, NASHVILLE WARBLERS and WORM-EATING WARBLER. On Sep 1, SGL 110 had 2 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, LEAST FLYCATCHER, CLIFF SWALLOW, NASHVILLE WARBLER and 2 DARK-EYED JUNCOS.

Lancaster County:

A juvenile GLOSSY IBIS was at the Conejohela Flats through Aug 27, and an unidentified Plegadis IBIS species flew by on Aug 30. The flats had BLACK TERNS on Aug 27 & Aug 29-30. On Aug 30, a juvenile RUDDY TURNSTONE was at the flats. On Aug 29, a STILT SANDPIPER was at Avocet Point. That day, the flats also had a RUDDY TURNSTONE, a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER and a WESTERN SANDPIPER. A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, SANDERLING, WESTERN SANDPIPER and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were at the flats on Aug 27. Other highlights from the Conejohela Flats included LITTLE BLUE HERONS, BUFFLEHEAD, PEREGRINE FALCON, LAUGHING GULL, CASPIAN TERN, FORSTER’S TERN and AMERICAN PIPIT. On Aug 30, Pumping Station Rd had a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, SWAINSON’S THRUSH and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER and CAPE MAY WARBLER were at Pumping Station Rd on Sep 2. Other sightings from Pumping Station Rd included TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER. An AMERICAN BITTERN was at the retention ponds along Junction Rd, west of Manheim Auto Auction.

Lebanon County:

On Aug 27, 29-30 & Sep 2, the SANDHILL CRANE was at Lake Duffy in SGL 145. On Aug 31, the power line cut off Pinch Rd, just south of SGL 145, at the Lebanon/Lancaster County line had a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and a BLUE GROSBEAK. The Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on Aug 30. This week, the Second Mountain also had BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, MERLIN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK and COMMON RAVENS.

Carbon County:

A MERLIN and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were at Beltzville State Park on Aug 28.

Monroe County:

PA Extralimitals:

In Crawford County, a first winter FRANKLIN’S GULL was discovered at the spillway at Pymatuning Lake on Aug 31-Sep 2. In Mercer County, an AMERICAN AVOCET was at the West River Rd access for Shenango Reservoir on Aug 29. In York County, an AMERICAN AVOCET was at Lake Redman on Aug 28. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was at a farm pond on Stoughstown Rd, south of Newville in Cumberland County on Sep 1-2. A juvenile WHITE IBIS was at Shenango Lake in Mercer County on Sep 2.


Extralimital Reports

MARYLAND:
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER has been seen a mile south of the intersection of Route 300 and Route 313 in Sudlersville, Queen Anne’s County, MD. The SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER has been perched on power lines near a small produce stand around 1421 Millington Rd (MD Route 313). The bird was seen as recently as Aug 30.


Announcements

Steve Kacir will lead a DVOC field trip to Johnson Sod Farm in Salem County, NJ on Sep 5. Please note the change of date. The trip will meet at 7:30AM at the Pole Tavern Circle Wawa, which is at the intersection of US-40 and Route 77. On Sep 6, Frank Windfelder will lead a DVOC field trip to Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Burlington County, NJ. This trip will meet at the parking lot at 6:45AM. On Sep 8, Mike Fritz will lead a field trip to Higbee Beach WMA for fall warblers and other migrants. This trip will meet at the main lot for Higbee Beach WMA at 7:30AM. Please contact the trip leader if you plan on attending any of these trips. The next meeting of the DVOC is an informal meeting at John Heinz NWR at Tinicum on Sep 3 at 7:30pm. The meeting will feature short presentations by DVOC-sponsored Academy of Natural Sciences intern Aaron Reichlin as well as Judith Keller and Bert Filemyr. Bob Friederman is requesting all the help he can get at the Lake Nockamixon Hawk Watch from Sep 13-22 from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. The hawk watch takes place at the marina parking lot.

- Rarities
- Good concentrations (e.g. 8 sp. of shorebirds at Green Lane)
- High numbers (e.g. 2,000 Common Mergansers at Peace Valley)
- Early/late occurrences (1st Indigo Bunting, lingering Phoebe)

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
