Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.


This week, we highlight reports of BARNACLE GOOSE in Hunterdon County, NJ; SPOTTED TOWHEE in Burlington County, NJ and LE CONTE’S SPARROW in Chester County, PA.

Cape May County:

The Cape May SANDHILL CRANE was at the Villas WMA on Jan 6-7 & Jan 9. On Jan 9, that same SANDHILL CRANE was at the pond east of Shunpike Rd on Cape Island. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was at the Villas WMA on Jan 11. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at Cape May Point State Park on Jan 10, and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was at the park on Jan 12. On Jan 9, the Bunker Pond at the State Park had TUNDRA SWANS. At least two EURASIAN WIGEONS were still using ponds at Cape May Point through Jan 11, when a drake and hen EURASIAN WIGEON were on the Lighthouse Pond at Cape May Point State Park. On Jan 11, one hundred SNOW BUNTINGS were at the first Plover Pond dune crossover at the State Park. A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was at The Nature Conservancy Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge on Jan 12. Lily Lake had a CACKLING GOOSE on Jan 7, a drake REDHEAD on Jan 11, a hen REDHEAD on Jan 12 and 3 EURASIAN WIGEONS on Jan 12. The Coral Ave jetty had PURPLE SANDPIPERS on Jan 9. That day, a PINE WARBLER and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were at the dunes of the St Peter’s jetty. Sunset Beach had 2 COMMON EIDERS and BONAPARTE’S GULL on Jan 7. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was feeding on goldenrod heads at Poverty Beach on Jan 10. Forty RED KNOTS were at the Two Mile Beach Unit of Cape May NWR on Jan 12. A CACKLING GOOSE was with Canada Geese at Sunset Blvd on Jan 6. A CACKLING GOOSE was in a field behind 621 Sea Grove Ave on Jan 11. Jake’s Landing had SHORT-EARED OWLS on Jan 7 and a WILSON’S SNIPE on Jan 9. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew across Route 47 near Dennisville on Jan 7. An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was at Beaver Swamp WMA on Jan 11. On Jan 7, Stone Harbor Point had HORNED GREBE, 11 COMMON EIDERS, PURPLE SANDPIPERS and a Harbor Seal.

Cumberland County:

On Jan 9-11, the Cumberland County crane flock was at the end of Husted Landing, including SANDHILL CRANES, the COMMON CRANE and COMMON CRANE X SANDHILL CRANE hybrids. That day, COMMON GOLDENEYES were seen from the Bay Point Marina in Cedarville. A COMMON GOLDENEYE was at Shellpile.

Atlantic County:

On Jan 11, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew over the marsh at the Gull Pond Tower at the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR. Other birds at Brigantine included TUNDRA SWANS and HERMIT THRUSH.

 

Monmouth County:

On Jan 9, a COMMON TEAL (aka EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL) was on the back portion of Lake Takanassee. Two COMMON MOORHENS were at the Gunnel Oval Park section of Kearny Marsh on Jan 8. On Jan 7, a COMMON EIDER was spotted off Roosevelt Ave in Deal. A GLAUCOUS GULL was at Shark River Inlet on Jan 10. On Jan 10, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was spotted off Sandy Hook’s B Lot. On Jan 12, a COMMON EIDER and 3 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at Sandy Hook’s Horseshoe Cove.

 

Burlington County:

The SPOTTED TOWHEE at Palmyra Cove Nature Park was reported through Jan 9. The SPOTTED TOWHEE has been seen near the intersection of the Red-winged Blackbird Trail and Saw-whet Trail, often seen in or around the Big Pit or the Little Pit in that area. On Jan 8, CANVASBACKS were near the Riverton Yacht Club and COMMON GOLDENEYES were near the Cinnaminson Harbour housing development.

 

Camden County:

Ocean County:

Barnegat Lighthouse State Park had NORTHERN GANNETS, GREAT CORMORANTS, 150-200 COMMON EIDERS, 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, SURF SCOTERS and PURPLE SANDPIPERS. A GLAUCOUS GULL was on the Island Beach State Park side of Barnegat Inlet on Jan 9-10.

Salem County:

On Jan 2, a flock of 200 AMERICAN PIPITS foraged on the first field west of the intersection of Sunset Dr and Route 540.

Gloucester County:

On Jan 12, a COMMON LOON, 2 GREAT CORMORANTS and 10 CANVASBACKS were seen at the Delaware River from the National Park dredge spoils.

 

Hunterdon County:

The Califon BARNACLE GOOSE was on the river on Jan 9-10, seen behind the church on Raritan River Rd on Jan 10. The woods around Round Valley Reservoir had RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES

 

 

Middlesex County:

On Jan 9, COMMON GOLDENEYES, including a yellow-billed GOLDENEYE were reported from the Delaware & Raritan Canal in New Brunswick.

 

Mercer County:

On Jan 11, forty-four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen from the yellow/red trail near the Beech Tree Trail at the Hamilton-Trenton Marsh

 

 

Warren County:

A light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted from Oberly Rd at the Alpha Grasslands on Jan 9-10. Merrill Creek Reservoir had 4 REDHEADS on Jan 8 and COMMON GOLDENEYE on Jan 9. Spruce Run Reservoir had 26 roosting LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS on Jan 9. On Jan 12, the Glenhurst Meadows (aka Warren Green Acres) had 7 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, including 4 adults.

On Jan 9, Jonathon’s Woods had RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, HERMIT THRUSH and PILEATED WOODPECKER.

NJ Extralimitals:

In Bergen County, the NORTHERN SHRIKE at Disposal Rd near DeKorte State Park was reported through Jan 9.

New Castle County

On Jan 10, a GOLDEN EAGLE flew over Carpenter Woods at Brandywine Creek State Park. The Tybouts Tract of Blackbird State Forest had PILEATED WOODPECKER on Jan 10.

Kent County:

A SHORT-EARED OWL was at Port Mahon Preserve on Jan 7 & 9. On Jan 11, a LONG-EARED OWL was detected at Finis Pool at Bombay Hook NWR. Eight WILD TURKEYS were in a cornfield east of Route 9 just south of the closed back road to the Allee House at Bombay Hook

Sussex County:

An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL put in an appearance at the Wolfe Neck Wastewater Treatment Facility on Jan 9 & 11, and three BLACK-HEADED GULLS were there on Jan 7. On Jan 7, a BROWN PELICAN was at the docks of the Indian River Marina at the northern bay side of Indian River Inlet. Four COMMON EIDERS were at Indian River Inlet on Jan 7, 9 & 11. Two Humpback Whales were spotted from Indian River Inlet on Jan 9. Other sightings from Indian River Inlet included RED-THROATED LOONS, GREAT CORMORANTS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, SURF SCOTERS, BONAPARTE’S GULLS and PURPLE SANDPIPERS. Rehoboth’s Silver Lake had CANVASBACKS. An apparent SNOW GOOSE X CANADA GOOSE hybrid was at Silver Lake on Jan 7. On Jan 9, BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES attended the feeders at the Cape Henlopen State Park Nature Center, and SNOW BUNTINGS were at the point at Cape Henlopen. Fowler Beach at Prime Hook NWR had an ICELAND GULL on Jan 9 and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS on Jan 9 & 11. A WILSON’S SNIPE was at Truitt Rd on Jan 9. On Jan 7, TUNDRA SWANS were seen from the west edge of Abbott’s Pond at the Abbott’s Mill Nature Center.

On Jan 9-11, a DICKCISSEL was at the Linden Ave Boat Ramp. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL is often seen at the Linden Ave Boat Ramp as well. A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen from Pelham Rd in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia on Jan 8. On Jan 9, Philadelphia’s Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant hosted 62 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, a BARN SWALLOW, an EASTERN PHOEBE and 3 PALM WARBLERS.

The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the Morrisville Levee was seen through Jan 11. The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW has been associating with a flock of Juncos at the levee. A dozen COMMON GOLDENEYES were on the Delaware River north of Morrisville on Jan 10. On Jan 9, Peace Valley Park had a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE roosting on the ice on Lake Galena southwest of the North Overlook. Other reports from Peace Valley included SNOW GOOSE and CACKLING GEESE. Reports from the Churchville Nature Center included LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. An albino RED-TAILED HAWK was seen from PA-663 just north of Allentown Rd outside of Milford Square.

 

Northampton County:

An adult female DICKCISSEL was at the Koch property on Jan 7-8.

The NORTHERN SHRIKE and light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Moyers’ farm were seen through Jan 10. The farm is at the southern intersection of Kings Highway and Janes Lane just outside of East Greenville in the extreme southern corner of the county. Only a single HORNED LARK was at Smith Lane in Alburtis on Jan 12.

Sweet Arrow Lake had PILEATED WOODPECKER on Jan 7. An EASTERN PHOEBE was near the Acopian Center buildings on Jan 13.

Two BREWER’S BLACKBIRDS were reported from a private residence in Bern Twp on Jan 6. Through Jan 12, the EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was still to be found near the intersection of Long Lane Rd and Dotterer Rd in Krumsville.

In Cumberland County, the PRAIRIE FALCON was at Mud Level Rd on Jan 10. In Lackawanna County, a VARIED THRUSH has been visiting a feeder at an undisclosed location since Dec 25, 2009. The homeowner is not permitting birders to visit the location.

On Jan 16, Martin Selzer will lead a joint DVOC & Wyncote Audubon field trip to Cape May, NJ for seabirds and wintering waterfowl. The trip will meet at 9:00AM at the Wawa at the northern intersection of Route 47 and Route 347. The trip will end the day at Jake’s Landing to look for Short-eared Owls. The next meeting of the DVOC is on Jan 21, 2010, featuring a program by Adrian Binns, entitled “The Naked Safari: Tales of East Africa.” The meeting takes place at The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia at 7:30PM. What is the Delaware Valley?

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
