Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service
provided by the joint efforts of the Academy
of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware
Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware
Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
. This week, we highlight reports of SWALLOW-TAILED
KITE in Kent County, DE and CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW in Lebanon County,
PA.

Cape May County:

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Cape May Migratory Bird
Refuge had a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on July 2 and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO
and WESTERN SANDPIPER on July 5. This week, the refuge also had PIPING
PLOVER, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, BLUE GROSBEAK and BOBOLINKS. Cape
May Point State Park had 2 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS through July 7 and a
drake SURF SCOTER on July 1. The state park also had GULL-BILLED TERN,
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, BLUE GROSBEAK and BOBOLINK. On July 3, two RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES and an AMERICAN BITTERN were at the dike at Higbee Beach
WMA, and a WORM-EATING WARBLER was there on July 1. A NORTHERN BOBWHITE
called from the field just east of Hidden Valley. The Cape May County
Back Bay had TRICOLORED HERON and LITTLE BLUE HERON.

Atlantic County:

On June 30, the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe
NWR had a calling WHIP-POOR-WILL at the beginning of Jen’s Trail
and a calling CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW at the Experimental Pond. Brigantine
also had WHIMBRELS, GULL-BILLED TERNS, BANK SWALLOWS and BLUE GROSBEAKS.
Great Egg Harbor Bay and Inlet had LITTLE BLUE HERON, TRICOLORED HERON,
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, GULL-BILLED TERN and SALTMARSH SPARROW.
Monmouth County:

A PIED-BILLED GREBE and 4 chicks were swimming at
Stevenson Park in Middletown Twp.
Burlington County:

still at Whitesbog through June 12.
A SNOW GOOSE, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, PURPLE MARTIN, ACADIAN
FLYCATCHER were at Palmyra Cove Nature Park on July 2. A singing DARK-EYED
JUNCO was seen at Palmyra on June 25. The Whitesbog TUNDRA SWAN was
reported through July 1.

Two BOBOLINKS were at Featherbed Lane on July 6.

Glassboro Woods WMA had 4 KENTUCKY WARBLERS and WORM-EATING
WARBLERS.

A BUFFLEHEAD was at Round Valley Reservoir on July
5. Bull’s Island Recreation Area in Delaware and Raritan Canal
State Park had YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS.
Middlesex County:
There were CLIFF SWALLOWS at the colony under the
Route 27 bridge at the Raritan River between Highland Park and New Brunswick.
On July 6, EGYPTIAN GOOSE and CASPIAN TERNS were in the area as well.

The Old Mine Rd area of Delaware Water Gap National
Recreation Area had LEAST FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, CERULEAN WARBLER, HOODED WARBLER and a possible RUFFED GROUSE
that was flushed from the side of the road just north of Peter’s
Valley. The Van Campens Glen area had HOODED WARBLERS.

New Castle County

On July 3, a DICKCISSEL and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were
at the former Van Allen wholesale flower plant on Hyett’s Corner
Rd.
Kent County:

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was perched on a snag at 2378
Ingram Branch Rd, Harrington on July 1. A male black RUFF, still retaining
some breeding plumage, was seen at Taylor’s Gut on July 3-4; BANK
SWALLOWS were also seen there. The black RUFF relocated to Raymond Pool
at Bombay Hook NWR on July 6. This week, Bombay Hook also had AMERICAN
AVOCETS, BLACK-NECKED STILTS and GULL-BILLED TERNS. Ten BLACK-NECKED
STILTS and 3 BLACK TERNS were at the north pond of Ted Harvey WA on
June 30, and the BLACK TERNS were still in the area through July 3.
A GULL-BILLED TERN was there on July 3.

On July 5, 2 COMMON EIDERS were at Breakwater Harbor
at Cape Henlopen State Park. Cape Henlopen State Park also had BROWN
PELICANS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, PIPING PLOVERS, BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES,
BLUE GROSBEAKS and Bottlenose Dolphins. The Roosevelt Inlet area had
NORTHERN BOBWHITE, BANK SWALLOW and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

On July 2, a juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was
at the Manayunk Canal.

This week, the Churchville Nature Center reported
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES (including a fledgling), CLIFF SWALLOWS and
PINE WARBLER. Peace Valley Park had calling BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS from
June 30-July 3, spotted most recently off Chapman Rd near the parking
area at the Ferry Rd side of Lake Galena.

An ALDER FLYCATCHER was still at Rex Rd in Heidelberg
Twp on July 5; the bird favors an area with Phragmites reeds just past
the “T” intersection of Rex Rd and Bake Oven Rd. On July
5, Heidelberg Twp had a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW at Bull Head and a VESPER
SPARROW at Bachman Rd. A HORNED LARK was at Saw Mill Rd. On July 5,
five COMMON RAVENS were spotted from the Bake Oven Knob parking area.
That day, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO called from the Appalachian Trail trailhead.
Also along the Appalachian Trail were CERULEAN WARBLERS, HOODED WARBLER
and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO.

The DICKCISSEL was still at the intersection of Williams
Run Rd and Smyrna Rd in Sadsbury Twp just north of Smyrna through July
6. On July 6, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen from the road near 220
William’s Run Rd: please be respectful and discreet when birding
in this area. The Conejohela Flats had PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. On June
30, BLUE GROSBEAKS were at the Turkey Hill Trail on the back side of
the Frey Farm and Creswell Landfill.
Lebanon County:

On July 2, a TRICOLORED HERON was at the dam spillway
at Memorial Lake State Park. The CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW was still
singing at Fort Indiantown Gap through July 1; the bird has been heard
along Tomstown Rd near Cold Springs Rd and more recently near Neuins
Lane in Grantville. Neuins Lane is the road leading to the Second Mountain
Hawk Watch. On July 3, Fort Indiantown Gap’s grassland tours discovered
2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, PRAIRIE WARBLER, BLUE GROSBEAK and GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS.
Carbon County:
On July 4, Hickory Run State Park had a RUFFED GROUSE,
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, BLUE-HEADED VIREOS and a NASHVILLE WARBLER
Monroe County:

Pike County:
On July 4, seven WHIP-POOR-WILLS and 3 BARRED OWLS
called from Flat Ridge and Five Meadows Rd.
Wayne County:

On July 17, Lynn Jackson will lead a joint Wyncote
Audubon & DVOC field trip to Bombay Hook NWR. Please contact Lynn
Jackson for details on this trip if you plan on attending. Additional

The next meeting of the DVOC is the annual picnic on
July 31, hosted by Paul and Anita Guris. The rain date for the picnic
is Aug 1. The picnic begins at 1:00PM at Paul & Anita’s place
in Green Lane, PA. Please RSVP for the picnic by July 23 if you intend
to attend. More information about the picnic can be downloaded from the

The next informal summer meeting of the DVOC takes place
on August 5 at 7:30pm at Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Palmyra, NJ. This
informal meeting’s short presentations will include “Rushton
Farm Bird Banding Station” by Lisa Kiziuk & Doris McGovern and
a new installment on Tom Bailey’s famous Birding Quiz. The next
informal meeting will be on September 2 at the John Heinz NWR at Tinicum
See Life Paulagics is running pelagic trips out of Lewes,
DE on August 15 (sign-up by July 10) and August 19-20 (sign-up by July
25) and out of Belmar, NJ on Aug 22 (sign-up by July 20). These trips
focus on summer seabirds and cetaceans, including White-Faced Storm-petrel.
