Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service
provided by the joint efforts of the Academy
of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware
Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware
Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
This week, we highlight reports of MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD
in New Castle County, DE; BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS and SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHERS in Cape May County, NJ and CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW in Lebanon
County, PA.

Cape May County:

The three BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were at the
Lighthouse Pond in Cape May Point State Park through July 27. On July
27, the BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were at the Bunker Pond before
flying towards Lily Lake. They were at the Bunker Pond and the Lighthouse
Pond on July 28. A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was at the second plover
pond and the north end of the state park’s Blue Trail on July
28. Two SANDWICH TERNS were on the sandbar at the Bunker Pond on July
25, and they were seen at the Bunker Pond again on July 27. Two UPLAND
SANDPIPERS were at the edges of Cape May Point State Park’s plover
ponds and bunker pond on July 24. A SORA ran across a trail at the State
Park on July 22. Other sightings reported from Cape May Point State
Park included PIPING PLOVER, STILT SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER,
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, BLUE GROSBEAK and Black
Rat Snake. A BLACK TERN was on the water off of the St Mary’s
jetty on July 22. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Cape May Migratory Bird
Refuge had TRICOLORED HERON, LITTLE BLUE HERON, STILT SANDPIPER, BANK
SWALLOW, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, BLUE GROSBEAK and BOBOLINK. A SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER perched at Higbee Beach WMA on July 23. On July 23, the immature
drake KING EIDER was seen near the Concrete Ship at Sunset Beach, and
a BLACK SCOTER was offshore and well north of the Concrete Ship. A NORTHERN
BOBWHITE was at the Cape May Bird Observatory Goshen Center for Research
and Education on July 27.

A RING-NECKED DUCK was at Manasquan Reservoir on July
25. A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was at the Henry Hudson Trail area
on July 24.

On July 26, an UPLAND SANDPIPER was at the Mercer
Sod Farm Important Bird Area; unfortunately, there is no public access
for this site.

Bear Swamp had ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, HOODED WARBLER
and WORM-EATING WARBLER.

On July 26, Mannington Marsh had 23 LITTLE BLUE HERONS
and a calling LEAST BITTERN at the Sunset Rd area. Mannington Marsh
also had WILLOW FLYCATCHERS. Fifty-five BANK SWALLOWS perched on wires
along Money Island Rd in Elisboro Twp on July 26.

A LITTLE BLUE HERON was at Spruce Run Reservoir on
July 23.
Middlesex County:
Nesting CLIFF SWALLOWS were seen at the bridge over
Lake Nelson in Piscataway. A suggested vantage point for viewing the
swallows is the intersection of Metlars Lane and Lake Park Drive.

Three RUDDY DUCKS were at Mount Hope Lake on July
22. Hurd Park had WILLOW FLYCATCHER, PRAIRIE WARBLER and CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER.

New Castle County

On July 21, a MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD crossed over
Route 1 just south of Odessa. On July 27, the Evening Heron Survey from
Delaware City tallied 288 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, 179 GREAT EGRETS, 292
CATTLE EGRETS and 2 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS along with CASPIAN TERN
and BANK SWALLOW.

Recent sightings from Bombay Hook NWR included CATTLE
EGRET, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, AMERICAN AVOCET, WESTERN SANDPIPER,
STILT SANDPIPER, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, BANK SWALLOW and BLUE GROSBEAK.
On July 24, Taylor’s Gut had two AMERICAN AVOCETS, WESTERN SANDPIPERS
and a probable WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.
Sussex County:

On July 25, Prime Hook NWR had a MARBLED GODWIT at
Fowler Beach and three WILSON’S PHALAROPES on the east end of
the south impoundment along Broadkill Rd. A TRICOLORED HERON, two WILSON’S
PHALAROPES and a BONAPARTE’S GULL were seen south of Broadkill
Rd on July 27. Other recent reports from the Broadkill impoundments
mentioned BLACK-NECKED STILTS, AMERICAN AVOCETS and STILT SANDPIPERS.
A BONAPARTE’S GULL was at Fowler Beach on July 24. Other sightings
from Prime Hook included BANK SWALLOWS and BLUE GROSBEAKS. At least
one NORTHERN GANNET has been seen five miles off Cape Henlopen Point
with some regularity. Gordon’s Pond had TRICOLORED HERON and LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL on July 25. The Gordon’s Pond area also hosted
LITTLE BLUE HERON and BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH. A kayak trip out of Bottom
Hills Drain at Indian River Inlet reported sightings of BROWN PELICANS,
TRICOLORED HERON, CATTLE EGRET, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, PIPING PLOVER
and ROYAL TERN. A CANVASBACK was seen by kayakers who headed north after
putting in at White’s Creek off of Route 26.

On July 24, John Heinz NWR at Tinicum had a CASPIAN
TERN. Other sightings from the refuge included SNOWY EGRET, MARSH WREN
and WILLOW FLYCATCHER.

An unidentified tern was spotted at Springton Reservoir
on July 22.
Chester County:

On July 23, a SANDHILL CRANE was at Church Farm Pond
Park area in Exton. The CRANE was best viewed from east side of the
trail surrounding the pond. Parking for the park can be found at a gravel
lot off Swedesford Rd, which is between Ship Rd and Church Farm Lane.
Marsh Creek State Park had 7 GREAT EGRETS on July 23.
Montgomery County:

A GLOSSY IBIS was at the Church Rd Natural Area of
Green Lane Reservoir on July 26. Green Lane Park had WILLOW FLYCATCHERS
at the Church Road Natural Area and the Goschenhoppen Church Rd area.
Two PURPLE MARTINS were at Deep Creek Lake on July 24.

A LITTLE BLUE HERON was at Core Creek Park on July
26-27. Churchville Nature Center had PINE WARBLERS.
Northampton County:

On July 26, an UPLAND SANDPIPER flew around the fields
off South Oaks Rd at Graver’s Hill. This week, Graver’s
Hill also had HORNED LARKS, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, VESPER SPARROWS, GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS and BOBOLINKS. A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was at the flooded fields
at Green Pond through July 25. The fields at Lily Hill Rd harbored HORNED
LARKS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS and SAVANNAH SPARROWS. A PIED-BILLED GREBE
was at Gremar Rd south of Nazareth.

A HOODED MERGANSER has been at the small pond off
Long Lane for about a week, and six BANK SWALLOWS were there on July
25.
Lancaster County:

On July 25, an AMERICAN AVOCET was at Avocet Point
at the Conejohela Flats. The flats had LITTLE BLUE HERON on July 22,
25 & 28. A PIED-BILLED GREBE was at the channel between Gull Island
and Green Island through July 25. At least 11 species of shorebirds
have been seen at the Conejohela Flats this week. Two CASPIAN TERNS
were at the Conejohela Flats on July 24. On July 26, a BONAPARTE’S
GULL was at the Flats, and a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was on the rocks
just south of the Route 30 bridge. Nine LAUGHING GULLS were at the water
discharge for the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station on July 25. Three
UPLAND SANDPIPERS were at the fields at Williams Run Rd and Smyrna Rd
on July 27, and two were seen there on July 28. An adult and two juvenile
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were at Williams Run Rd on July 28. On July 24-27,
Middle Creek WMA had an ALDER FLYCATCHER at Kleinfeltersville Rd just
past auto tour stop #1 on the west side of the road. Other sightings
from Middle Creek included CASPIAN TERNS, BLUE GROSBEAK and BOBOLINKS.
Lebanon County:

The CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW was still singing at
Fort Indiantown Gap through July 25; the bird has been heard along Tomstown
Rd near Cold Springs Rd and more recently near Neuins Lane in Grantville.
Neuins Lane is the road leading to the Second Mountain Hawk Watch.
Carbon County:
A BLUE GROSBEAK sang at Lehigh Gap Nature Center on
July 27.
Monroe County:

On August 29, Frank Windfelder will lead a DVOC
field trip to Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Burlington County, NJ. The trip
is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. Please contact Frank Windfelder
to register for this trip if you plan on attending. The trip will meet
at the Palmyra Cove Nature Park parking lot at 6:45AM. Additional information
including the past trip reports and contact information for the trip leader
can be found on the DVOC website: http://www.dvoc.org
The next meeting of the DVOC is the annual picnic on
July 31, hosted by Paul and Anita Guris. The rain date for the picnic
is Aug 1. The picnic begins at 1:00PM at Paul & Anita’s place
in Green Lane, PA. Please RSVP for the picnic by July 23 if you intend
to attend. More information about the picnic can be downloaded from the

An informal summer meeting of the DVOC takes place on
August 5 at 7:30pm at Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Palmyra, NJ. This informal
meeting’s short presentations will include “Rushton Farm Bird
Banding Station” by Lisa Kiziuk & Doris McGovern and a new installment
on Tom Bailey’s famous Birding Quiz. The next informal meeting will
be on September 2 at the John Heinz NWR at Tinicum. Details are on the
website, and guests are always welcome.
