The Hotline will also be updated in the event any especially important rarities appear in the Delaware Valley Region such as Ivory Gull, Long-billed Murrelet, Red-footed Falcon, etc.

Our current announcers for the RBA are Win Shafer and Cindy Ahern, though, there will doubtlessly be others who contribute in this respect. Welcome to the Delaware Valley Rare Bird Alert, a service provided by the joint efforts of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC), covering the Delaware Valley Regions of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

This week, we highlight reports of WHITE IBIS in Sussex County, DE; BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS in Cape May & Atlantic Counties, NJ and BLACK-HEADED GULL in Bucks County, PA.

Cape May County:

The three BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen through Aug 3, with sightings coming from the Bunker Pond and the Lighthouse Pond at Cape May Point State Park. A SURF SCOTER was spotted from the state park on July 31. Other reports from Cape May Point State Park mentioned BROWN PELICANS, PIPING PLOVERS, STILT SANDPIPERS, WHIMBREL and BANK SWALLOW. The subadult drake KING EIDER spent time at the Concrete Ship off Sunset Beach through Aug 3. Often the KING EIDER is best observed from the end of Alexander Ave. A SURF SCOTER was spotted off the St Mary’s jetty on July 28. Sightings from The Nature Conservancy Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge included PIPING PLOVERS and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Migrants at Higbee Beach WMA included AMERICAN REDSTART and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Poverty Beach on July 29. On Aug 2, Stone Harbor Point had PIPING PLOVERS and RED KNOTS.

A late report from the Brigantine Division of Edwin B Forsythe NWR mentioned that two BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were at the end of the road to the Gull Pond on July 26.

Monmouth County:

Conaskonk Point had a WHIMBREL on July 30.

Burlington County:

The injured TUNDRA SWAN was at Whitesbog through Aug 3.

Cumberland County:

A CANADA WARBLER showed up in Bear Swamp on Aug 1, and other birds at the swamp included local breeders like YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER and WORM-EATING WARBLER

On July 30, a Birding by Kayak Tour of Island Beach State Park reported TRICOLORED HERON, a BRANT, a MARBLED GODWIT and WHIMBRELS.

A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was at the National Park dredge spoils on July 29. Glassboro Woods WMA had PRAIRIE WARBLER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, HOODED WARBLER and BLUE GROSBEAK.

A BONAPARTE’S GULL was at the boat ramp at Spruce Run Reservoir on July 30, and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was there on Aug 2. An UPLAND SANDPIPER was in Franklin Twp on July 29.

Middlesex County:

A PILEATED WOODPECKER was in Plainsboro Preserve.

Mercer County:

The Glenhurst Meadows/Warren Green Acres had an immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LEAST FLYCATCHER and a CERULEAN WARBLER on Aug 1.

Somerset County:

Lord Stirling Park had PILEATED WOODPECKERS, American Mink and River Otters. On Aug 1, a TRUMPETER SWAN was reported to eBird, seen from the Lloyd Rd Pond in Bernardsville.

New Castle County

BOBOLINKS flew over Burrows Run Preserve on July 31.

Kent County:

A female RUFF, known as a REEVE, and a male WILSON’S PHALAROPE were at Bear Swamp in Bombay Hook NWR on July 29. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was reportedly at Shearness Pool on Aug 2. A BLACK TERN was at Raymond Pool on Aug 2. Other birds at Bombay Hook included LEAST BITTERN, TRICOLORED HERON, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, AMERICAN AVOCETS, BLACK-NECKED STILTS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, WESTERN SANDPIPERS, STILT SANDPIPERS, NORTHERN BOBWHITES, BANK SWALLOWS and BLUE GROSBEAKS. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Port Mahon on July 28-29, and WESTERN SANDPIPERS were there on Aug 2. Port Mahon’s ROYAL TERNS were also reported this week. On July 29, Taylor’s Gut had WESTERN SANDPIPERS.

 

Sussex County:

On Aug 2, an immature WHITE IBIS was seen at Prime Hook NWR at the first pond going out Fowler Beach Rd. On Aug 2, Fowler Beach had a CASPIAN TERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, three MARBLED GODWITS and SALTMARSH SPARROWS. A single MARBLED GODWIT was at Fowler Beach on Aug 1 & Aug 3. A TRICOLORED HERON was at Fowler Beach on Aug 3. Prime Hook Rd had BLACK-NECKED STILTS. On Aug 1, a hatch-year WHITE IBIS, TRICOLORED HERON and 2 WHIMBRELS were at Gordon’s Pond in Cape Henlopen State Park. On Aug 3, Gordon’s Pond had a TRICOLORED HERON. A hen and subadult drake COMMON EIDER were at the jetty on the bay side of Cape Henlopen through Aug 1. That day, RED KNOTS were at Cape Henlopen Point. On July 29, WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS were seen from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

On Aug 1, John Heinz NWR at Tinicum had a LEAST BITTERN, 3 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, SNOWY EGRETS and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS. A COMMON LOON was at the Delaware City Harbor on Aug 1.

The Church Rd Natural Area of Green Lane Reservoir had a GLOSSY IBIS through July 30, and a second GLOSSY IBIS was also present on Aug 1-3. The Church Rd area hosted WESTERN SANDPIPERS on July 30-Aug 3 and a CASPIAN TERN on Aug 1. Up to 15 GREAT EGRETS have been seen in the area.

On Aug 1, a BLACK-HEADED GULL flew over the Delaware River near Bristol. A WILSON’S PHALAROPE was seen from the Woodbourne Rd causeway at Core Creek Park on July 31. Two LITTLE BLUE HERONS were at Core Creek Park on July 28 & 31. On July 29, a CASPIAN TERN was at the Elm Ave area of the Churchville Nature Center. On July 31, Bradford Dam had LITTLE BLUE HERON and BANK SWALLOW.

On Aug 2, two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were on wires on the south side of the intersection of Freemansburg Ave and Warner Rd in Bethlehem Twp. When birding this area, please keep safety and courtesy to others on the road in mind and respect private property and the local residents. Freemansburg Ave is a very busy road. A CASPIAN TERN was at the flooded field at Green Pond on Aug 1. A GREAT EGRET was at the Albert Rd ponds in Bushkill Twp on July 29.

On Aug 3, two COMMON RAVENS were at the south lookout of Bake Oven Knob.

A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was in Boyertown on July 29 and Aug 1.

On July 28, two GLOSSY IBISES were at the Green Island shoreline at the Conejohela Flats. Other sightings from the Conejohela Flats included PIED-BILLED GREBE and GREAT EGRETS. On Aug 2, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was at Woods Edge Park, off S Centerville Rd. Seven UPLAND SANDPIPERS were at the Lancaster Airport on Aug 2, as seen from the gravel parking lot at the intersection of Route 501 and Millport Rd.

Beltzville State Park had a FORSTER’S TERN near the boat launch on Aug 1, and a BONAPARTE’S GULL was there on Aug 2.

On August 28, Steve Kacir will lead a DVOC field trip to the Johnson Farm sod fields in Salem County, NJ. Please contact Steve if you plan on attending. The trip will meet at 7:30AM on Griers Lane just past the intersection of Griers Lane and Route 77. On August 29, Frank Windfelder will lead a DVOC field trip to Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Burlington County, NJ. The trip is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. Please contact Frank Windfelder to register for this trip if you plan on attending. The trip will meet at the Palmyra Cove Nature Park parking lot at 6:45AM. An informal summer meeting of the DVOC takes place on August 5 at 7:30pm at Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Palmyra, NJ. This informal meeting’s short presentations will include “Rushton Farm Bird Banding Station” by Lisa Kiziuk & Doris McGovern and a new installment on Tom Bailey’s famous Birding Quiz. The next informal meeting will be on September 2 at the John Heinz NWR at Tinicum. Details are on the website, and guests are always welcome.

What is the Delaware Valley?

The Delaware Valley is the name given to the region that lays on either side of the Delaware River, centered on Philadelphia. This consists of southeastern Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey and the state of Delaware.
