Tracking Stone’s Tome – Further Information

In Volume 68 of Cassinia, Sandra L. Sherman published an article tracing many of the 1,400 copies of Bird Studies at Old Cape May by Witmer Stone

This article is only a small part of the legacy Sandy left DVOC.

Additional information that has come forth since the publication of the article. The DVOC earnestly seeks corrections or additions to the material in this article. Contact the Webmaster with any additional information. The copy number can be found on the last page of the second volume.

This table is the information DVOC has concerning the 1,400 volumes. The DVOC is indebted to Jeff Holt for his interest in this project. He has gone over Sandy’s original notes to find information on volumes not mentioned in the article plus done extensive original research. He is the “main man” when it comes to this ongoing project. Alan Simon has also contributed extensive research.

George grew up in Philadelphia, his family had a summer place in Stone
Harbor, and it was his mother’s set, which he had no interest in keeping;
so he gave it to Rick along with a boxful of Stone’s earlier publications
on birds, insects, and mammals; and 2 copies of Plants of Southern New
Jersey which, as a botanist, Rick treasures and use frequently. Rick remembers
George telling him that his mother knew WS in some connection.

cover Volumes of Witmer Stone’s “Bird Studies at Old Cape May”.
8″ X 10 5/8″ . 1st Volume (only) has separation of inside binding
to endpapers.Slight movement of covers. Easily repaired but should be

Valley Ornithological Society. Some light foxing, tissue covers for color
frontis foxed as well. This is number 679 of the First Edition of 1400.
These volumes include migration arrival dates for birds passing through
or arriving into Cape May County, and include nesting info on local species.
Earl LPool’s pen and ink illustrations are some of his best, or any artist’s
rendition of birds in this medium.

11/09 note from Bill Uhrich – “To solve the previous owner’s mystery
name: it’s Earl W. Rollman. He was a Reading pastor who had a number of
classic ornithology texts, including Birds of Massachusetts – which I
saw at a Lancaster bookseller – Chestnut Street Books- several years ago.
I didn’t buy it because I already owned the set. I bought several of Rollman’s
books that I’d found in Lancaster bookstores, including Chapman’s Birds
of Eastern North America and Warblers of North America and Griscom’s Birds
of the New York City Region, which I have at my desk here and can confirm
the signature. He appeared to be more of an armchair ornithologist, for
he didn’t make any contributions to Berks records, as Poole’s 1947 A Half
Century of Bird Life in Berks County Pennsylvania does not list him as
a contributor among the bird students of the day. I am surprised at the
1947 date of the Bird Studies volumes, as the books of his I have are
dated from 1925 and 1926.

“I purchased this at the Academy of Natural Sciences
as a very young teenager while attending a meeting of the DVOC with a
gentleman named Ed Manners and William Middleton. (no close relative)
Actually I may have purchased the book later during a visit to the Academy
since as I recall the meetings were held when the desk was not open.
Despite the age of the volumes, they are in mint condition since I have
always valued them highly and kept them in a closed bookcase. I have always
wondered whether Mrs. Stone (nee Lafferty) is an extended family member
of my Mother, Anna E. Lafferty.”

*– Each of these individuals are identified by Sandy in her article and have since passed away. Current ownership of these volumes is presently unknown.

** – Ownership history of this edition is discussed in the Sherman article, but the edition number is not identified.

*** – Temple owns copy 1071. Many libraries used the Temple record for their cataloging. This caused this book to appear in multiple catalogs. Most colleges (including N.C. State University, Bowling Green University, NY Public Library, American Museum of Natural History (NY)) are now editing their own records. (Alan Simon 2/06)

**** – This volume is mentioned in a letter to Sandy Sherman. Unfortunately, page 2 of the letter with the authors name was not with Sandy’s notes.
