Sandra Keller will lead a monthly field trip in Burlington County, NJ. Burlington is one of the better known counties for birding in south Jersey – but only for certain areas – mainly Palmyra. These trips will concentrate on other hotspots in the county. The schedule will include Palmyra if something rare is reported. We will explore for the seasonal birds to be expected. Since Burlington is such a large county, we will explore the western half one month, then the central and eastern half the next.
Trips will be scheduled on Sunday during hunting season and may switch to Saturday later in the year. I am going to try and keep the trips to the third weekend of the month, but please check every month as I have travel commitments that might interfere. If that happens I’ll change to the second weekend of the month. The meeting place, time, and plan for each month will be posted at the start of the month. This gives us flexibility to start somewhere in the east when needed. These trips are geared to all levels and interests in birding – photography, listing, beginners, experts, those looking to learn Burlington better, etc. Anyone is welcome to join for only part of the day if that works for your schedule. I will be submitting lists to ebird for each location and will share those lists for those participants who use ebird if desired. I also plan on writing a longish trip report covering the whole year! I am intrigued on how many species we can see for the year.
First Date – Sunday – January, 21, 2018. 7:30AM.
January’s trip will start at Taylor’s Wildlife Preserve in Cinnaminson. Please meet at 7:30AM at the parking lot on Taylor’s Lane right at the start of River Rd. It will be on the right hand side as you pull in. We will be searching for owls, sparrows, waterfowl, gulls, corms, etc. We will hit one or two river spots after here. Then maybe a spot for gulls if I scout out a good area. Then head “inland” a bit to one of the local parks that Burlington has created around the county. Again, depending on what is being seen, we can head somewhere a dusk watch. If any doubt about the weather, please email me a couple days before hand.

Hi Folks – Jan 28th is rained out. Rescheduled to Saturday Feb 4th. We really need good weather for this trip and it looks like we will finally get that on Saturday. Forecast is sunny and 34 degrees.
Barnegat Lighthouse and jetty are famous for wintering ducks including Harlequin, Long-tail ducks and Eiders. In addition, we often see Northern Gannets diving close to shore and walk amongst Purple Sandpipers, Dunlin and other shorebirds on the jetty. We also have a good chance to see Ipswich race of Savannah Sparrow and maybe even a Snowy Owl along the dunes.
Bring your camera for up close photographs of some of these species. We will linger at the jetty and have plenty of time to capture a few outstanding shots.
Meet in the lighthouse parking lot at 7:30 AM so that we can get out to the jetty in good light. Or, meet us later out on the jetty. If we have time, we can also peruse the back bay coves along LBI.

This trip will start with a gull study. Florence still sees a good variety of gulls – with both Iceland and Glaucous being seen last month. Sunday might be a bit iffy as the dump is not in operation then, and the gulls might not stick around. That’s also why the early start.
We will hit one or two spots after here depending on what I find while scouting.

Explore Franklin Parker Preserve searching for early migrants. Expect a lot of walking on fairly well maintained trails. Franklin Parker Preserve comprises 9,770 acres of pine woods south of Chatsworth lake. The Preserve is New Jersey Conservation Foundation’s largest, encompasses 16 square miles in the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. It is accessible by a network of sandy roads that wind though pitch pine forest and blueberry fields, and run along the preserve’s cedar swamp, shallow lakes and pristine tributaries of the West Branch of the Wading River.

Let’s get into the swing of spring by touring Belleplain State Park in search of early spring migrants and breeding birds. We will listen and look for specialties such as Summer Tanager, Worm-eating Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Hooded Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, Yellow-billed Cuckoo and more. Many of these species are at the northern limit of their range but show up early to establish breeding territories.
Meet at the Park Visitor Center where we will try to carpool for the rest of the trip. We will end by noon.

We will also stop in at the historic Livezey house (Glen Fern) and the “Cresheim Pines”, which is the largest conifer stand in Philadelphia. The trip leader (Matthew) will share information about the industrial history of the area, and its rich bird life.

This gem of a pine barrens preserve (also known as Lebonan State Forest) has many different habitat types – not just the dry, upland forests that most people associate with the pine barrens – but open successional areas, cedar bogs, cranberry bogs, etc. We will hit all the different habitat types. All areas are accessible by car with limited walking once we reach an area.
For a list of possible species for the trip, please see eBird and the Brendan Byrne hot spot and look at the bar graphs. But keep in mind that this area is very under birded. I look forward to adding to the ebird data for April to this hotspot. The trip will go until around noon.
The date is on the border of when a lot of species return, so if any doubt about certain species, please email me.
Be prepared for ticks this time of year although we won’t be bushwhacking.
Directions – the headquarters is accessible off of either Rt. 70 or Rt. 72. I prefer Rt. 70 as it is well marked with signs. There is a Wawa along Rt. 72 for those who need food before we start. Please have a full tank of gas before we start. This Wawa does not sell gas. I do request that those interested in the trip please email me and let me know.

Located on the Delaware River, this 44-acre site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Red Bank is a developed, passive park with the remains of Fort Mercer. The park provides excellent views of the Delaware River and surrounding bird life. From the parking lot, walk through the park looking and listening for the typical birds found in the spring such as woodpeckers, blue jays, northern cardinals, Carolina wrens, sparrows, and swallows. Next scan the river for gulls, cormorants and possible lingering winter ducks. There is a bald eagle nest nearby. Special emphasis will be placed on learning the songs and calls of common species, and ID tips for crows (American, fish), blackbirds (red-winged, grackle, brown headed cowbird), waterfowl (mallard, bufflehead, mergansers, black duck, grebes) and the common gull species (laughing, herring, ring-billed, great black backed). Directions: Meet at the pavilion closest to the river.

This is the largest municipal park in New Jersey and in spring it comes alive with songbird and raptor migrants adding to the year-round residents. Red-winged Blackbirds and Canada Geese are nesting around the lakes. Many breeders begin nesting in the woods, especially near the streams, and the Bluebirds are active around their boxes. Directions: Meet at the parking lot by the amphitheater.

The Tannersville Cranberry Bog, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, partnered with programming by Kettle Creek EEC, is recognized as the southernmost low altitude boreal bog along the eastern seaboard and is designated as a National Natural Landmark. Tannersville Cranberry Bog was once a 715 acre kettle lake formed thousands of years ago by glacial depressions, eventually becoming filled in by layers of sphagnum moss to 60 feet deep, creating an acidic fen providing a unique habitat for many species of plants and animals usually found in northern boreal bogs.
This trip will focus on boreal breeding species including Canada Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, and Purple Finch. Uncommon to rare acid-loving plants occur in this plant community, including May-blooming rarities Kalmia polifolia (bog laurel) and Andromeda polifolia (bog rosemary). If the weather is warm, we may observe a variety of odes, Spotted Turtle and other herps (Ribbon Snake has been observed on the property in the past).
The property has been designated as a Pennsylvania Important Mammal Area, providing important habitat for otters, beavers, bobcat, and bears. The 150 acre wetland and bog is part of a 775 acre preserve and is surrounded by upland woods that should be productive for breeders and migrating species. The Tannersville Cranberry Bog is publicly accessible only for scheduled public tours or by special permit, and participants for this trip are limited to 15. All students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a free trip, donations to Kettle Creek EEC are suggested and appreciated (checks acceptable made out to Kettle Creek EEC).

Just north of Havre de Grace, MD, along the banks of the Susquehanna River, is Susquehanna State Park. The park, with its pristine forest and open areas hosts a large number of breeding birds, including 14 species of warblers. We will hope to see and hear Louisiana Waterthrush, Cerulean, Kentucky, Prothonotary, and Yellow-throated Warblers, among others.

As a follow up to the presentation on June 7th, Judy Stepenaskie will lead a trip to view the famous Peregrine Falcon nest in Manayunk on Sunday June 10th. Meet at 5:00 pm on Sunday June 10th, at the entrance to Pretzel Park, near the corner of Cresson and Rector Streets in Manayunk. Pretzel Park is across the street from St. John the Baptist’s R.C. Church, where the peregrines nested. We will see both adults and juveniles and hopefully some dinner action. Manayunk Rock Dove high on the list of entrees. I will have a scope, but you are welcome to bring your own. We may walk a block or two as we look at the falcons.

June’s trip to explore Burlington County will be at Brightview Farms. This working farm allows birds to come and explore. In years past, Grasshopper Sparrows have nested in the fields. We will explore for grassland birds here.
Please rsvp Sandra if coming and we will meet at 7:30AM 1/4 mile down the entry road. After a few hours here, I might hit another woods spot for breeders. A lot will depend on the weather.

Join Bob Horton on this annual pilgrimage to see Upland Sandpipers at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. The grasslands here are the best annual site in NJ for seeing the breeding displays of Upland Sandpipers. We also expect Grasshopper and Field Sparrows, Horned Lark, Eastern Meadowlark and in the pine forests Pine Warbler.
Important: Participants MUST sign up by Wednesday, May 16. Please provide Bob Horton with your full name, drivers license number and state, and date of birth. To grant access to the base, the military needs this information two full weeks before the trip. Each participant must be a US CITIZEN and will need a valid driver’s license or picture ID to enter the base. Our stay in the Jump Zone grasslands will be 3 hours.
You must register with Bob Horton for this trip in advance. Email Bob at: horton633@verizon.net. This trip is limited to 20 people.

Meeting time: 7AM at the Chapel of the Air parking lot in Lakehurst
Directions: Take Rte 70 to the center of Lakehurst. At the McDonalds and gas station, turn onto Rte 547. In about a mile, on the left there is a gray chapel named the Chapel of the Air. We will car pool from this parking area under the supervision of John Joyce, the base Conservation Officer. Each car entering the base will need a registration card and proof of insurance.

Join Sandra Keller to explore Amasa Landing. This is a saltmarsh on the coast in Burlington County. We will hit this spot scanning and listening for Boat-tailed Grackles, Willet, Seaside Sparrow, shorebirds moving around, maybe a Tricolored Heron, etc. After we are done here, Sandra will visit either Forsythe NWR or Great Bay Blvd. Neither of these is in Burlington County, but there isn’t too much to hit in the county in July in this area.
We will meet at 8:30 on Sunday, July 22 at the new walkway at Amasa. For directions, plug in Amasa Landing Rd.
It comes up as the town of Tuckerton. The ebird hot spot is “Bass River – Amasa Landing Rd.”.

Parking: Parking is difficult. You may be able to find a place on Umbria St. across from the school. Best bet is to park at Septa’s Ivy Ridge Train Station, a few blocks away at 4901 Umbria Street and walk to the school. You’ll be able to see the swifts along the way.

Join Audubon Philadelphia for a bird walk on the grounds of the newly opened Discovery Center – a project of the National Audubon Society and Philadelphia Outward Bound School! This site was not accessible for the general public for 30 years and is home to around 150 bird species.
Lead by Keith Russell, this one-mile walk will last around 1.5 hours. Bring your own binoculars.

*****UPDATE***** – this trip has been cancelled due to restrictions at the bog. Heavy rain has washed out the boardwalk making visitation unsafe. The bog will not issue permits for the remainder of the season.
Join Cindy Ahern at Tannersville Cranberry Bog for fall color. While the focus will be on the spectacular foliage of the bog, there will be birds, including winter arrivals. We also look for herps and insects. Previous trips have yielded a number of species of special concern. Since many DVOC members have an interest in botany, I am extending this invitation to interested members.
The Tannersville Cranberry Bog, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, partnered with programming by Kettle Creek EEC, is recognized as the southernmost low altitude boreal bog along the eastern seaboard and is designated as a National Natural Landmark. Tannersville Cranberry Bog was once a 715 acre kettle lake formed thousands of years ago by glacial depressions, eventually becoming filled in by layers of sphagnum moss to 60 feet deep, creating an acidic fen providing a unique habitat for many species of plants and animals usually found in northern boreal bogs.
The Tannersville Cranberry Bog is located in Monroe County, PA, near the Delaware Water Gap. Many species of plants and animals normally found in northern boreal bogs (like a little piece of Canada in PA!) occur here, including a number of endangered species. This trip is timed for the peak of Larix laricina (Tamarack, or American Larch) fall color, along with the brilliant reds of the heaths. The Tannersville Cranberry Bog is publicly accessible only for scheduled public tours or by special permit, and space is limited.
This is a free trip, but your donation is encouraged to help support maintenance of the trails and programming. (Checks acceptable made out to Kettle Creek EEC).
Dress in layers, the bog is usually 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding woodland. Wear sturdy shoes for a short, uneven hike to the bog along a woodland trail to a boardwalk path leading through the wetland habitat.

Join Cindy Ahern for a Northern Saw-whet Owl banding program at Scott Weidensaul’s Hidden Valley Banding station in Schuylkill Haven, PA, during saw-whet owl migration.
The banding station is located in the general area of Hawk Mountain (it is a little further west), and is approximately a 2 hour drive from the Philadelphia area.
Visitors should arrive around 6:30 PM for orientation – nets are checked every hour on the hour until midnight. When owls are caught in the mist nets, they are brought inside to demonstrate the banding process, which includes a general examination to determine age, weight, fat reserves, sex, eye color, and wing and bill length, banding the owl with a federal band, then releasing the owl. You may leave at any time – no need to stay until midnight if owls are caught during an earlier net check.
There is no guarantee you will see owls. The banding will be cancelled in the event of foul weather.
Registrations are required, and space is limited. Young bird enthusiasts receive priority registration, based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Join Sandra Keller at Whitesbog. We were cancelled out for August, but the bogs have been drained late this year. This is a late date for most shorebirds, but we might get lucky with a rarity. We will look for other birds also, like sparrows. If we don’t have enough to keep us occupied here – it is late Oct. – we will continue on to Brendyn Byrne and Reeve’s Bog – to explore there. RSVP is required. Trip is canceled if too bad weather. Or if I find out the bogs have been flooded again early. We will meet at noon at the village parking lot.

This trip is timed to see golden eagles and hopefully northern goshawk. Waggoners Gap may be a farther drive than Hawk Mountain, however you can drive almost up to the lookout so the trip is about the same and this site gets more birds! We should still get good numbers of other raptors like red-tails, red-shoulders, and sharp-shinned hawks. We often see non raptors like common loons, bluebirds, and pine siskins. We will stay on the hawkwatch until our butts hurt and head to Harrisburg for a pint at Millworks.

FDR Park is one of the Top 3 birding destinations in Philadelphia for which a Master Plan is currently being developed that will transform the park in the years to come.
To ensure the birding community is well represented at the next community meeting on November 14th this trip will educate participants about the parks history, habitats and avifauna as well as provide a peak into future design possibilities. This time of year the park is good for waterfowl including the possibility of good looks at the recurring drake Eurasian Wigeon. In addition, we might be lucky enough and still enjoy the Common Gallinule pair that chose FDR Park over John Heinz NWR to raise their chicks this year or get a fleeting glimpse at an American Bittern.
Sturdy shoes for walking off trail are recommended. Meet at the parking lot just east of the gazebo (GPS: 39.903522, -75.178762).

This trip is timed for the return on wintering waterfowl and gulls. This trip will be at low tide to observe the gulls that roost on a silt bar at the mouth of the Poquessing Creek. We hope to see lesser black-backed and white-winged gulls, common goldeneye, canvasback, great cormorant and bald eagle.
