Brief Description:

Penguins are definitely not “one size fits all.” Although they mostly live in the Southern Hemisphere and none can fly, they occupy varied habitats on diverse continents with distinct lifestyles and specific physiology to match. Penguins are intrepid, living in some of the harshest environments on earth. They all depend on oceans for food, and although they are optimally designed for pursuing fish, they still manage to come ashore and waddle, hop or toboggan– sometimes over long distances–to get to where they have their nests on land or ice. Unfortunately, human needs for farming and fishing have collided with the needs of penguins, and global climate change has impacted them, as well.
This presentation will show and discuss the different species of penguins and how they live, and the speaker will share some of her experiences observing and photographing them in the wild, as well as efforts being made to conserve them.

Brief Bio:

Ardith Bondi lives in Manhattan. She earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Columbia University and engaged in medical research at New York University Medical Center and at The Rockefeller University before leaving her research career to perform as a flutist. After years of performing and teaching, she still plays in the Centre Symphony in Manhattan and photographs birds near home and in many other interesting places far removed.
