Building a Relationship With Nature Through Your Yard

Speaker: Blake Goll (in-person)

As humans, we are built to live in connection with others. It’s what makes us feel happy, whole, and inspired while even living longer. Relationships are the roots that make us who we are and allow us to become who we’re meant to be, but how many times do we consider our relationship with the natural world as being integral to our health, growth, and wellbeing?  This lecture will look at our yards as places we can curate to support the birds, butterflies, bees, and plants that ultimately enrich our world and nourish the most important relationship each of us can ever have: connection to nature. In addition to covering resources on how to integrate more native ecology into our yards, we’ll explore creative ideas on how to interact with the biodiversity in our backyards–and why it’s so important

As the creator of the award-winning Rushton Nature Keepers program at Willistown Conservation Trust, Blake Goll provides youth with opportunities to develop relationships with nature through multi-disciplinary and year-round programming. She also assists with the daily operations of the songbird banding and owl banding stations throughout banding season, and provides outreach to help educate the community about conservation. Prior to the Trust she was an environmental educator at Penn State’s Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, following which she banded songbirds in Washington and Oregon for the Institute for Bird Populations. Blake is a North American Banding Council (NABC) certified bird bander. She is also a frequent contributor to the Trust’s digital content channels, local magazines, and speaker at like-minded organizations. Blake holds a Bachelor of Arts in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Pennsylvania State University.
