Birding Backpack Lending Program: Transforming Access to Nature through Public Libraries

Speaker: JoAnne Woods (in-person)

Birding backpacks contain high-quality binoculars, a field guide, local trail maps, and more. We loan them to the public and use them for library programs and partnership programs. Lending them gives patrons access to equipment they might not otherwise be able to afford. Our Birding Backpacks are an entry point for libraries to provide inclusive nature programming. Programs include bird walks, nature story-times, outdoor teen book clubs, bat nights, feeder watches, citizen science programs including bioblitzes, and more. Partnership opportunities are abundant and expand our reach and our offerings. Partners benefit from collaboration, joint promotion, sharing of patrons, equipment, and resources. Our program has been expanded multiple times and is sustainable through donations and grants. It continues to be a valuable resource to our communities and fits perfectly with our library’s mission to “advance literacy, guide learning and inspire curiosity.”

During this talk, you will hear a status update on the Birding Backpack Program, statistics on use and organized programming information.  You will find out what challenges we’ve overcome and which still exist.

The Free Library offers bird programs onsite and offsite. The “Go Birds: Appreciating Our Avian Friends” exhibit is on-view during Summer 2025 at the Parkway Central Library. You will see a video tour of highlights from the exhibition and hear about the successful citywide programming done in collaboration with all of Philly’s Bird Clubs.

Libraries are uniquely situated to serve every citizen in the city.  We provide services to all people regardless of socioeconomic status.  We bridge divides to provide access.  I will share my vision for the future of library nature programs and services.  Find out what is in the works and what is yet to come.

JoAnne Woods has worked for the Free Library of Philadelphia for over 22 years. She started as an After School Leader, providing homework help and creating enrichment programs. She was accepted into the Library Trainee Program and completed her MLIS at Drexel University. After 11 years of Children’s services, she transitioned to Adult/Teen work. In 2015, she became the Library Supervisor at the Andorra Branch in Northwest Philadelphia. Her programming specialties are birding, nature, and meditation.
In 2017, JoAnne founded the Free Library’s Birding Backpack Program. Initially, three branches were involved. The program has since expanded to 20 Free Library locations across the city, including neighborhood and regional libraries, as well as the Parkway Central Library. JoAnne continues to coordinate the program. In addition to seeking funding, surveying staff and vetting new locations, she also facilitates partnerships for participating libraries. Last year, her program received national coverage when Audubon Magazine interviewed her for their Summer publication. JoAnne has had many opportunities to spread the word about the program through various news outlets and at Author Events including Christian Cooper and Amy Tan.

JoAnne enjoys painting and exhibits her work at local galleries and art festivals. She primarily works in watercolor but also enjoys collage and mixed media. Using art as an emotional outlet, her work focuses on birds, nature and the abstract. Her other interests include meditation, hiking, swimming and birding. She loves spending time with friends, family and her Little Sister (Big Brothers Big Sisters), who she’s been paired with for over six years. She enjoys traveling and exploring new places with her husband, Ren.
