Brief Description:

Women connected with birds long before there were binoculars, smart phones or social media. As culture and communications evolve, the stories of women’s roles in ornithology and birding are emerging with due prominence. In pre-industrial America, it took special grit for a woman to stand out in any scientific endeavor amid the scores of white men. It still takes effort, but the scales are tipping as women birders make a difference as ornithologists, teachers, researchers, writers, artists, promoters, tour operators, and as they inspire all who love wild birds. From Rosalie Edge–the hellcat of raptor conservation, and Harriet Hemenway–the plume-scorning fashionista, to Maria Martin–a favored artist of Audubon, and Graceanna Lewis, who described Delaware County as “…a favorable point of observation for the young ornithologist,” (yes, she did!) women have been influential members of the birding community for centuries. Join me to learn about people you may never have heard of (though perhaps some names you’ll know) and how women will continue to grow as a force beyond feathers.

Brief Bio: 

Debbie Beer has been an avid birder for more than 20 years. She has birded in multiple countries and continents, including India, Brazil and Africa. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia is Debbie’s favorite local patch, where she directs the annual “Big Sit” event, leads monthly bird walks, and supports access to green space and nature for underserved urban communities. She is fortunate for the opportunity to blend professional and personal interests, having worked for Natural Lands since 2013 as their Director of Volunteers. In this capacity, Debbie manages robust volunteer nestbox-monitoring and bird-surveying programs on Natural Lands preserves, incorporating the eBird and iNaturalist community science tools. She participates in multiple regional bird conservation initiatives, including annual the Christmas Bird Count, the Philadelphia Breeding Bird Survey, and the Philadelphia Mid-Winter Bird Census. She is a life member and fellow of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) and president of the Birding Club of Delaware County (BCDC).
