Born in London, raised in Morocco, educated in England, I came to the United States in 1977 to pursue a career as a tennis professional. I have had an interest in birds and wildlife for as long as I can remember, and can still recall the excitement of spotting an albatross as our family crossed the North Atlantic in November 1965. Two articles in National Geographic during the early 70's, one on Hawk Mountain and the other on the endangered Swallow-tailed Kites in the Everglades, made a lasting impression on me - little did I know then, that I would one day drive by a sign that pointed to Hawk Mountain and eventually lead birding tours to Florida. A mid life crisis forced me to evaluate my interests - birds, beer and birds….one of those was missing, so I joined the DVOC in March 1997 and as they say, "the rest is history".
