A formative experience: During a holiday visit to Florida as a child, I had stayed on the beach past dusk. I was running back as I would get in trouble, though I noticed that someone had wired a tag to the foot-rinsing spigot up ahead. It didn't cross my mind that I was seeing anything other that some sort of holiday related gesture. Well that ornament turned its head 180 degrees to look at me as I ran toward it. I froze. It turned to face me, and cocked its head to the left and then to the right. And then it moved its upper half in a semi-circle several times before flying off. I had encountered my first Burrowing Owl.

Now as adults, my husband and I have spent every possible weekend over the past 20 plus years hiking and birding anywhere and everywhere within a two hour drive of Philadelphia. We're never without binoculars on our travels either. Though our birding activities have been almost completely divorced from our social and professional lives, we hope to be able to contribute as well as learn from the DVOC and its activities.
