Positions and Achievements

I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area, and I started birding at the age of ten when
a volunteer at Briar Bush Nature Center showed me her life list and helped me add the first bird
to my life list: a Cooper’s hawk. I was hooked, and subsequently insisted that all of our family
vacations include good birding opportunities. Throughout middle school and high school, I
enjoyed birding at Militia Hill Hawk Watch, all around the Wissahickon Creek, and at Heinz
National Wildlife Refuge. I spent four years in the Midwest as an undergraduate at the
University of Chicago, where my passion for birds grew through my work in Dr. Steve Pruett-
Jones’ lab and my volunteering at the Field Museum. After graduating, I spent three months in South Australia studying splendid and variegated fairy-wrens before returning to Philadelphia, where I have been working with Dr. Nate Rice and Dr. Jason Weckstein as the DVOC intern at the Academy of Natural Sciences. In the fall, I will start as an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology PhD student at Cornell. However, I will always be a Philadelphian at heart, and I look forward to maintaining a connection with Delaware Valley birding!
