Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.
We plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river, but if folks want, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.
Please dress according to the expected weather.
We will meet at 10 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.
For questions, please reach out to birdphillywalks@gmail.com.

Join DVOC, Wyncote Audubon and the folks from the Discovery Center for a morning walk around the reservoir to look for wintering ducks and birds. This is an historic spot for Canvasbacks in the city if the water is ice-free. The group will be treated to some awesome origami artwork by our own Tori Sindlinger which represents bird/building collisions. Representatives from Bird Safe Philly will be on hand to talk about the work of the group and opportunities to get involved in the effort.
This event is planned to coincide with the Great Backyard Bird Count. Free event but registration is required.

Pedricktown Marsh has often had Sandhill Cranes. Recently, up to 21 Sandhills have been reported here.
Park immediately before the causeway across the marsh. There is no parking out on the marsh. We will walk behind the roadway barriers to get to a place where the cranes have been seen. Also possible this time of year are Northern Harriers, Bald Eagles, and winter ducks, including many American Black Ducks. Depending on how long it takes to find the Sandhills, we may bird other nearby areas.
NOTE: The location listed is the approximate location of where to park.

This art and nature walk will focus on birds in Lardner’s Point Park. In the winter, we can see sparrows, gulls, ducks and possibly Great Cormorants or the resident Peregrine Falcons that nest on the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge. We will learn about their characteristics, migration patterns, and role in supporting a healthy ecosystem. Participants will then be invited to make an expressive watercolor painting capturing the color, pattern, and movement of local birds.
We will meet at the entrance to the park off Levick Street. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. Please dress according to the expected weather. There is currently construction at the park entrance and it may appear that the road is blocked, however, the park is still open. Drive in past the construction signs and park. The park is along the Route 84 bus route.
This event is free to all, but please register here.
This event is part of a joint program between the Mural Arts Tacony LAB Community Art Center and Riverfront North Partnership, co-facilitated by artist-in-residence Rebecca Schultz and BirdPhilly guide Holger Pflicke. Through environmental education and hands-on arts activities, participants will gain a greater understanding of the riverfront ecosystems along the Delaware River. All participants are invited to contribute to the culminating artwork by attending follow-up workshops at TaconyLAB. Participants of all ages are welcomed and encouraged!

The Meadows at FDR Park is one of the few natural places in South Philadelphia where people can go for a hike, picnic, walk their dog or just explore the great outdoors with friends and family.
City officials are threatening to destroy this great public space and turn it into artificial turf soccer fields, paved roads, buildings and a privately-run golf driving range. So we’re getting together to show the City of Philadelphia that their constituents want to keep this beloved park wild.
Join us on April 24th from 1 pm-3 pm for quick actions, family friendly activities, and chances to make your voice heard.
Please RSVP here.

Just 30 acres in size, this township park along Chester Creek is full of wet meadows, forests, and lots of great birds. In late April, we should see plenty of sparrows and warblers. The loop trail is short (~0.6 miles) and mostly flat, but uneven. Trails are often wet or muddy; waterproof or knee-high boots are highly recommended. Our list of birds and other living creatures will be part of the 2022 City Nature Challenge, a global community science initiative. This event is hosted in partnership between BCDC (www.bcdelco.org) and DVOC (www.dvoc.org).

Join Tori Sindlinger on the ballfield of Houston Playground to experience the spectacle of nocturnal migration and celebrate World Migratory Bird Day! We will train our optics on the full Hunter’s Moon, watching for birds to fly in front of it. Please bring a spotting scope if you have one (I will also have one to share). On good migration nights I have seen a bird cross the moon roughly every 30 seconds! Perhaps we’ll even hear some owls hooting away while we’re out there. In addition to birds, we should also have good conditions to admire the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn.
The event will be cancelled in the event of rain.

The Tannersville Cranberry Bog, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, partnered with programming by Kettle Creek EEC, is recognized as the southernmost low altitude boreal bog along the eastern seaboard, and is designated as a National Natural Landmark. Tannersville Cranberry Bog was once a 715-acre kettle lake formed by glacial depressions, eventually becoming filled with layers of sphagnum moss to 60 feet deep, creating an acidic fen supporting a unique habitat.
The Tannersville Cranberry Bog is in Monroe County, PA, near the Delaware Water Gap. Many species of plants and animals normally found in northern boreal bogs (like a little fragment of Canada in PA!) occur here, including several endangered species. This trip explores the unique plant community and its inhabitants including birds, herps, insects, etc.
This is a free trip, but your donation is encouraged to help support maintenance of the trails and programming. (Checks acceptable).
Wear sturdy shoes for a short, uneven hike along a woodland trail to a boardwalk path leading through the wetland habitat.
RSVP is required for this trip. Please contact Cindy Ahern at cynthia.ahern@temple.edu or call or text 215-840-4010 to reserve your spot and for additional details, including meeting location and directions.

Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls and waterfowl during the winter. We can also discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.
We plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river, but if folks want, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.
Please dress according to the expected weather.
We will meet at 9 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.
