Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.
We plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river, but if folks want, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.
Please dress according to the expected weather.
We will meet at 12.30 pm at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.

Join the DVOC on Sunday Feb 19th at Naylor’s Run Park for a bird walk from 8am-9am. Naylor’s Run has seen a bald eagle on a few occasions in the past few months, so we will be keeping an eye up for that. This park can be home to 50+ species of bird throughout the year.
We’ll start at 8am and take a mix of paved and wooded trails through the park for approximately 1 hour. The wooded trails can sometimes be muddy, so good footwear is recommended. Walking is easy-to-moderate. Bring binoculars.

This walk’s location was formerly known as League Island, then became the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1871, and is now known as the Navy Yard.
Join us as we begin the day with some stationary river watching, then walk east along the river to explore some less birded areas of one of Philadelphia’s Top 5 eBird Hotspots.
Expect to walk about 2-3 miles along even, paved terrain, with the possibility of some unpaved, muddy areas as well. Please dress appropriately for the expected weather.
The trip leader will have one scope to share; feel free to bring your own for the river-watching portion of this walk.
We’ll meet at the end of South Broad Street (after Urban Outfitters) where you can also park (GPS: 39.887487, -75.175782).
No binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are now back on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra, Cobbs Creek, Cecil B. Morre, Falls of Schuylkill, Frankford, Greater Olney, Logan, Richmond, South Philly, Torresdale, and Widener.

We will explore the beautiful grounds of this historic estate that is threatened with partial destruction by the Lower Merion School District to convert it to playing fields (see https://preserveoakwell.com and http://growoakwell.com and http://saveoakwell.org). It has a stand of very old trees, including some more than 150-200 years old, one of which is the champion Red Oak in Montgomery County. Its adjacent sister property, Stoneleigh Gardens, a Natural Lands Trust site, is an eBird hotspot https://ebird.org/hotspot/L5815063 (which Oakwell is not, since it is private property), and between it and Oakwell 115 species of birds have been documented (see eBird list for Stoneleigh above), including, most recently, Barred Owl and Raven.
If the weather agrees with us, we could get a nice showing of migrants, but be prepared for Warbler neck :), since many of the trees are quite high. Some of the areas can be wet, so wear appropriate shoes. Because this walk will be on Day 3 of the City Nature Challenge (https://www.citynaturechallenge.org/about ) we will also be using iNaturalist to document birds and other living things, so please *DOWNLOAD iNaturalist* before arriving. We will teach you how to use it, if you have never done so!

This trip is cancelled due to leader’s injury.
We will take a leisurely walk along the trail in this linear park, which opened in 2011. The entire trail runs along the former rail line from the old Cynwyd SEPTA Station out onto the Manayunk Bridge, and it has two side branches, one of which we will explore, since it will take us through a shaded forest glade and down to the river.
Meet at the old Barmouth Station entrance to the trail, about 0.8mile north of Cynwyd Station, where there is a parking lot. The trail can also be accessed at that point from a gateway between the Cynwyd Trail and West Laurel Hill Cemetery, which has a parking lot behind its Funeral Home located on the left about 100 yards from the cemetery entrance on Belmont Avenue.
Over about 25 years here, more than 140 bird species have been recorded (though not all have been eBirded), and in the latter part of August we may get lucky with some returning migrants. But we will certainly have a good chance to see the Peregrine Falcons that nest in the steeple of St. John Church across the river, and we will have chances to see songbirds, gulls, waterfowl, and other raptors–so, I would expect about 35 species.

Join BirdPhilly.org for a leisurely stroll of the BirdPlace of the Nation, as we enjoy the birdlife present in the greenspaces around Independence Hall. October is an excellent month for bird migration (arguably the best) and the green areas in this area can serve as important resting places for migrant birds. We’ll see what we can over the course of about an hour here.
We’ll meet at the small bridge over what used to be Dock Creek behind Carpenter’s Hall (GPS: 39.947827, -75.147019) and gradually work our way up to the Commodore Barry statue.

A truly unsung hero of West Philly and quite possibly the least visited park in the city. Twenty acres of rehabbed woods adjacent to 300 acres of derelict golf course offers a unique habitat for woodland and grassland birds. Let’s find some thrushes as well as sparrows! Boots and pants are suggested for this rolling terrain that is sometimes muddy and often overgrown.
Meet at: 6525 Vine St

For those unfamiliar with the park, there is series of grass, dirt, and paved walking paths that we will be birding. Besides resident and migrating passerines, we will have ample opportunities to view migrating raptors during the walk. The park is nearby both Dixon Meadow and the Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve, so stops there afterwards can be combined with the walk.

Join Jamie and Lynne on Sunday November 19th at Naylor’s Run Park for a bird walk from 8am-9am. We will be looking for white-throated sparrows, tree sparrows, fox sparrows, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, golden crowned kinglets, winter wrens, and raptors like red-tailed hawks, cooper’s hawks, and sharp-shinned hawks. Naylor’s Run has seen a bald eagle on a few occasions, so we will be keeping an eye up for that. This park can be home to 60+ species of bird throughout the year.
We’ll start at 8am and take a mix of paved and wooded trails through the park for approximately 1 hour. The wooded trails can sometimes be muddy, so good footwear is recommended. Walking is easy-to-moderate. Bring binoculars, and meet in the main parking lot near the Upper Darby Tree Nursery. Led by Lynne Rabchuk and Jamie Watts. Free for all to attend!
