In autumn migration, huge numbers of Chimney Swifts roost in chimneys of certain schools in the Philadelphia area. The birds gather near the school just before dark and in a spectacle of nature, dive into the chimney in a synchronized flight. We’ll watch the chimney swifts as they swirl around in a frenzy before finally entering the chimney at the school to roost overnight.
It is a sight to behold that only lasts a few minutes! Arrive at the school around 6:45 PM when the birds begin to gather. Bring a folding chair if you want to relax while we wait for the show.
Meet alongside the Thomas Mifflin School on Conrad Street. Park on Conrad, Midvale or Warden Streets at 6:45 pm.
This is a joint field trip of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club and the Wyncote Audubon Society.
