Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.
We plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river, but if folks want, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.
Please dress according to the expected weather.
We will meet at 10.30 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.
No binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are now back on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra, Cobbs Creek, Cecil B. Morre, Falls of Schuylkill, Frankford, Greater Olney, Logan, Richmond, South Philly, Torresdale, and Widener.

Join BirdPhilly and Philly Queers Birders as we check out Philadelphia’s winter bird residents at the Navy Yard! We’ll meet up at the intersection of South 13th Street and Admiral Peary Way to find the ducks that hang out on the Delaware River, and to see who else is around. We’ll keep and eye out for for Cormorants, Gulls, Raptors Woodpeckers, Sparrows, and other winter birds! No registration is required and plenty of binoculars to share.
The Navy Yard Riverfront Trail is a wide, flat, paved path with benches along the way and we’ll move at a leisurely pace with frequent stops to scan the river. Since it’s a winter morning and on the water, it will probably be colder and windier than in other parts of the city so dress accordingly. There is free parking on 13th, 11th and along Admiral Peary Way. Please do not park in the private lots as you could be towed. The 17 bus also extends to the Navy Yard on the weekends.
Note there are no bathrooms along the route, but there is a Courtyard Hotel nearby.

The 200+ acre park surrounding Mill Grove, the first home in the US of John James Audubon, has several diverse birdy habitats – meadow, mature woodland, wetlands and the Perkiomen Creek. The E-bird checklist shows 180 species. The hike around Mill Grove is about 1.5 miles and takes about 2 hours, depending on bird activity. The paths are partly asphalt and partly rough woodland tracks. There are a few gentle hills.

Thursday Mornings (Sept – Oct) meet Martin Selzer at 8:00am to explore the wooded trails, meadows, and farm fields of Harriet Wetherill Park in, Montgomery County. For those unfamiliar with the park, there is series of grass, dirt, and paved walking paths that we will be birding. Besides resident and migrating passerines, we will have ample opportunities to view migrating raptors during the walk. The park is nearby both Dixon Meadow and the Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve, so stops there afterwards can be combined with the walk.
Meet at the west entrance at 2635 Narcissa Rd, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462

One of the healthiest meadows in West Philly in terms of native grasses, which has historically been a magnet for grassland birds during October. This walk will move slowly as we focus on the nuance and subtle differences that the grassland birds have to offer. Let’s meet in the parking roundabout. Binoculars are available for borrow.
Free and welcome for all birding levels.

Pennypack on the Delaware is uniquely positioned along the river providing crucial habitat for migrants and the odd rarity. The flats at the confluence of Pennypack Creek and the Delaware frequently host gulls and shorebirds. The park also hosts Philadelphia’s most viewable Bald Eagle nest. Dress for weather.
Let’s meet at the covered picnic area at the ballfields (GPS: 40.0277033, -75.012093).

Meet at the Visitors Center for this fall field trip to “Brigantine!” We will do some birding around the trails located near the Visitors’ Center. We will then drive the loop around the refuge with frequent stops as needed for birding. As time permits, we will travel to the north end of Brigantine Island if there are birding opportunities that make this extension worthwhile. Bring lunch, beverages and snacks and will plan to eat as we go. Dress for the weather.
Please register for this trip so we can communicate any last-minute changes to you about the trip. https://wyncoteaudubon.org/event/edwin-b-forsythe-national-wildlife-refuge-2/
