Now running in its 39th year, this census will gather data on wintering birds all over Philadelphia.
This is an all-day event that, for some teams, starts and ends with a search for owls. In the last few years, this has resulted in around 107 species (typically besting all Christmas Bird Counts in the area).
If you are interested in participating, please contact phillybirdcensus@gmail.com.
You can do this on your own (if you can ID sparrows, you are good to go), or join one of the many teams at your favorite Philly birding location or while exploring a completely new area.
The individual territories largely overlapping with the city’s green spaces can be found here.
We are always open to including new locations that can be surveyed for many years.

Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.
We plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river, but if folks want, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.
Please dress according to the expected weather.
We will meet at 11.00 am at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.
No binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are now back on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra, Cobbs Creek, Cecil B. Morre, Falls of Schuylkill, Frankford, Greater Olney, Logan, Richmond, South Philly, Torresdale, and Widener.

The winds could gust to 50mph so this walk will be rescheduled to a later date.
It the last day of the Great Backyard Bird Count. Join us for some birding fun at Lake Lily in the middle of Cape May Point! The lake should provide some great views at a good number of overwintering ducks. Time and weather permitting we will check out other sites in the area, including the end of Sunset Blvd for wintering birds such as loons, gannets, and dovekies.
Meet at the south end of the lake near the the Handicapped Parking area. We will start by viewing and learning how to identify the waterfowl. After reviewing key identification marks, we will take a leisurely stroll around the lake. This trip is perfect for beginners.
The trip will occur weather permitting. Watch the website for updates in the case of inclement weather.

Join BirdPhilly for a walk through a truly unsung hero of West Philly and quite possibly the least visited park in the city. Sixty acres of rehabbed woods adjacent to 300 acres of derelict golf course offer a unique habitat for both woodland and grassland birds. A very active area for all raptors and songbirds! Boots and pants are suggested for this rolling terrain that is sometimes muddy and often overgrown.

Mindful Birding pairs observing birds with mindfulness techniques, creating a practice that cultivates a heightened awareness and fosters connections. Labeling or identifying birds is not the primary focus, but instead the intention is slowing down and noticing, using birds as our guides. This style of birding is inclusive and accessible for people of varying abilities.
Through guided instruction, we’ll practice simple mindfulness exercises to engage our sensory awareness while intentionally tuning into the birds surrounding us. Techniques and prompts will accompany the gently guided walk, which can enhance our observation skills, deepening our experiences with wild birds around us. This in turn amplifies the positive benefits birds provide to our overall wellness. Participants will receive a take-home journal to foster observation and awareness and provide take-away techniques.
No experience with birding or mindfulness practice are necessary to attend. A few pairs of binoculars will be available to borrow from your guide.
All are welcomed!
Accessibility information: This program has been developed to be inclusive and accessible. People with mobility disabilities are particularly welcomed to attend. Please contact leader in advance with any questions. This will be a slow-paced walk on wide and mostly flat paved trails, traveling less than two miles. There are no stairs or steep inclines. We might sometimes stand for short periods of time as we observe birds and share our experiences with birds. On-site indoor restrooms are available.
Your Leader, Holly Merker will be the petite woman wearing an Eagles hat with binoculars and small spotting scope! Holly is certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and certified Forest Therapy Practitioner, Wellness Counselor, Mindful Birding specialist, and professional birding guide. Holly is a DVOC Fellow and Life Member who is excited to share this new approach to wellness with the club.
Limited to 12 people; contact leader to reserve your spot at ornitherapy@gmail.com
Specific details on what to bring, preparing for weather, what to expect will be shared via email from Holly upon sign up.

Celebrate Earth Day by deepening your connection with the forest, and birds around you. With origins inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku, or Forest Bathing, harnesses the health and restorative benefits the natural world holds for us. Birds intertwine with all habitats, and through a framework of guided “invitations” centering around them, we can deepen our connections to nature by engaging the senses, noticing, and awakening our experience of reciprocity with the natural world.
This experience will be a bit different than a traditional outdoor guided walk, not focusing on sharing naturalist knowledge or identification, but instead allowing the forest and birds to intentionally guide us into to slowing our pace. A tea celebration among the group will be included in the experience as we celebrate earth day, birds, and the natural world around us.
Led by Holly Merker, certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide and certified Forest Therapy Practitioner, Wellness Counselor, Mindful Birding specialist, and professional birding guide. Holly is a DVOC Fellow and Life Member who is excited to share this new approach to wellness with the club.

Pacing: This program has been developed for most all mobility levels. In tradition with Forest Bathing principals, this will be a slow-paced experience on unpaved trails, some with elevation, and will include gathering time where we’ll sit and sometimes stand, for short periods of time.
More details will be provided upon sign-up.
