Join Darshan Mehta at The Discovery Center in Philadelphia to explore the East Park Reservoir for ducks and other wintering birds. Audubon Mid-Atlantic uses The Discovery Center as a facility for research and science-based conservation projects and educational programs throughout the Philadelphia region. The Discovery Center also allows visitors to connect to Audubon’s national and international conservation initiatives, serving as a major migratory stopover on the Atlantic Flyway for over 100 species of birds and as a premier destination for bird watching throughout the region. This is a joint trip with DVOC and Audubon Mid-Atlantic.

DESPITE THE STUPID RAIN THIS ONE IS STILL HAPPENING! Instead of meeting at the flagpole in the rain, we’ll be under the pavilion here. There is no guarantee of what we will see, though. There could be zero birds, or there could be something awesome. You just never know.

————————————————————-

Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.

We plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river, but if folks want, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.
Please dress according to the expected weather.

We will meet at 1 pm at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.

No binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra, Cobbs Creek, Cecil B. Moore, Chestnut Hill, Eastwick, Falls of Schuylkill, Fishtown, Fox Chase, Greater Olney, Independence Library, Logan, Lovett Memorial, Northeast Regional, Oak Lane, Parkway Central, Richmond, South Philly, Torresdale, West Philadelphia Regional, and Widener.

Trip Leader: Tony Croasdale

Now running in its 40th year, this census will gather data on wintering birds all over Philadelphia.
This is an all-day event that, for some teams, starts and ends with a search for owls. In the last few years, this has resulted in around 107 species (typically besting all Christmas Bird Counts in the area).

If you are interested in participating, please contact phillybirdcensus@gmail.com.

You can do this on your own (if you can ID sparrows, you are good to go), or join one of the many teams at your favorite Philly birding location or while exploring a completely new area.

The individual territories largely overlapping with the city’s green spaces can be found here.
We are always open to including new locations that can be surveyed for many years.

Trip Leader: Tanya Burnett

Free to all members and non-members

Oh, you read that right. DVOC club member Tanya Burnett is living in Panama and wants to share her knowledge of the local hotspots with us.

First of its Kind Walk:

On January 17 at 7:00 am, Tanya Burnett will lead a walk at Parque Natural Metropolitano. This slice of rainforest has been preserved within city limits.  It has a species list of 428 (John Heinz has 307). In addition to fabulous birds, we may also see coati, sloth, agouti and monkeys.
Consider planning a trip with friends to experience the magical birding Panama has to offer. US Air offers a connecting flight through Miami and Copa has direct flights out of New Ark and BWI. Both are affordable when booked in advance.
Other bird outings will be planned in the area once there are confirmed participants. My goal is to help grow your life lists as cost effectively as possible. Pipeline Road and Summit Ponds are just two of the incredible hotspots within an hour of the city. I can also help people organize Eastern or Western Panama birding if you want to extend your stay.
To participate, send a confirmation email to btravelhappy@gmail.com. You can also send any questions.

Disclaimer:
This bird walk is an informal outing among friends. Tanya is not a licensed tour operator or professional guide, and participation is strictly voluntary. Each participant is responsible for their own travel arrangements, park entry fees, health, safety, and personal belongings. By joining, you acknowledge that outdoor activities involve certain risks (such as weather, wildlife encounters, uneven terrain, or accidents), and you agree to assume full responsibility for your own safety. Neither Tanya or the DVOC can be held liable for any injury, loss, or damage that may occur during these activities.

The small tidal flats at Borski Park have been very productive with gulls in the first season after the park opened in July 2025. So, we wanted to see if it’s worthwhile doing a gull watch in parallel to our traditional event at Glen Foerd. This will be a stationary event at the river, but we may walk around a bit if there is some activity. Dress for weather.
Let’s meet at the Delaware River Trail sign at the entrance of the park next to the parking lot.

Bird walk at the infamous Higbee Beach WMA for spring migration. We will walk the fields and scan the bay in search of some eye candy. Meet in the parking lot at the end of New England Road. Scheduled for early migrants and breeding birds setting up territories.

Spring migration is best when winds are from the southwest overnight. If we have bad winds, we will still start here and work our way around the area looking for other birds along the bay and around the lighthouse.

This is another installment of our newly established after-work bird walks – basically anywhere this particular trip leader can get with public transit in around 30 min.
We’ve been meaning to try this location for a number of years, but it never worked out. Spring migration is slowly winding down, but we should still see some good stuff. The area has a nice mix of trees, river access, and a community garden.Let’s meet at the entrance at 25th St and Delancey Place.

No binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at all Philly Free Library branches.

The event is free and open to everyone.

Join us to explore one of Philly’s Top 3 birding locations. This park has a few good birding areas including the lakes, woods and meadows of the old golf course. We will concentrate on areas that are productive each month. Due to consistent flooding in the park please be prepared for muddy and wet areas. Water-proof shoes or mud boots are recommended. Dress for weather.

Meet at the parking lot east of the gazebo (39.9034994, -75.1787725), NOT at the gazebo. In case the gates are closed, please park on 20th Street and walk to the meeting place.

No binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are now available on loan at all branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Let’s ring out spring migration at one of Philly’s top birding locations. We’ll mostly focus on the lakes and lagoons, but may also have a peek at the new wetland if time allows. While migration is winding down, there is still a good chance for some warblers and other migrants. And we’ll certainly have a chance to check on our resident birds.

Please meet us at the parking lot east of the gazebo/opposite the playground (GPS: 39.9034994, -75.1787725). In case the gates are closed, please park on 20th Street and walk to the meeting place.
