The Bird Safe Philly team has been doing a lot of work this winter getting ready for spring migration season. Volunteers are already at work monitoring building collisions, logging dead birds and transporting injured birds to rehab. The team is identifying buildings that have high collision rates and scheduling window treatments to reduce/eliminate the danger. They have also been getting the word out about the importance of dark skies for safe bird migration. WXPN will be airing spots this month about it and driving people to the Bird Safe Philly website to take the pledge. They’d love for DVOC members to join in this important (and often overlooked) aspect of bird migration safety. Here is how members can help:
- Pledge to reduce or eliminate exterior lighting at home
- Talk to or nominate a commercial property to take the same action

As part of the grant that Bird Safe Philly received, the team is also looking for members to participate in window retrofit projects. Here is how they can help:
- Assess your home windows for bird collisions and treat those windows with Feather Friendly dots. Even one collision is a sign that the window is dangerous.
- Talk to building managers at properties where there are dead birds reported. Ask them to contact Bird Safe Philly for information on making their buildings safer for birds.
- Sign up to volunteer to install window treatments at existing retrofit projects
