Lorimer Park Spring Bird Walks (8 weeks)

8 week bird walk series starting at Moredon Rd parking lot running on consecutive Weds to watch spring migration.

April 7, 2021 – 6 participants, overcast conditions. The group was treated to a pair of Eastern Phoebes looking to nest under the foot bridge, American Kestral sitting on a fence post in Fox Chase Farm north pasture, 2 Pine Warblers and 1 Palm Warbler. Bluebirds and Tree Swallows fighting over nest box.

April 14, 2021 – 7 participants, sunny conditions. Kestral continues in north pasture of Fox Chase Farm, 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Palm warbler. Lot’s of Downey Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers calling and drumming.

April 21, 2021 – 8 participants, cool conditions. Bluebirds and Tree Swallows continue to fight over prime nest boxes. No warblers on the walk today but Gnatcatchers are in. Northern Flickers have taken up residence in a nest hole right at the parking lot. Kestral continues in the farm field.

April 27, 2021 (Tuesday) – only 2 participants, sunny conditions. Yellow-rumped warblers high in trees. No Kestral today.

May 5,2021 – Cinco de Mayo walk had 7 participants, cloudy conditions with rain at the end of the walk. Birds were abundant but difficult to see. The group saw 4 species building nests – American Robin, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Baltimore Oriole and Northern Flicker. Notable numbers of American Goldfinches congregating at Black Walnut trees near parking lot. Warblers were abundant with 12 species heard and/or seen.
