Bonnie Witmer welcomes Brittany Stewart as the newest DVOC member and congratulates her on diving right in as Banquet Committee Chairperson. No new member applications were read.
Conservation George Armistead
George Armistead announces that the Philadelphia Bird Race will be held on Oct 2, 2016. Kickoff scheduled to coordinate with Heinz Refuge’s annual Big Sit. Philly Bird Race proceeds will help fund the DVOC Intern’s Fund and Audubon Window Strike project. Participants are urged to participate in any aspect including big green hour, kids group or full race. Details at www.philadelphiabirdrace.org
Steve Kacir announces that Tony Croasdale will be heading up a DVOC World Series of Birding team this year. More details to come.
Billings Big Year Steve Kacir
Steve Kacir announces that Vincent Nichnadowicz is the winner of the 2015 Billing’s Big Year contest with 354 species seen.
Field Trips Steve Kacir
Steve Kacir tells the group about upcoming field trips. Next trips are:
Patty Rehn will lead a trip to Barnegat Light in NJ on March 12. Meet in the parking lot at 8 AM. Targets are Harlequin Ducks, Purple Sandpiper along the jetty and Ipswich sparrows.
Tony Croasdale will lead a trip to Heinz Refuge on March 12. Meet in the parking lot at 10 AM.
Tony Croasdale will lead an evening outing at Eastwick (adjacent to Heinz Refuge) on March 12 for displaying Woodcock. Meet at 86th & Lindberg Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA.
Steve Kacir will lead a trip to Green Lane Reservoir on Mach 19 focusing on waterfowl. Meet at the Church Road Bird Sanctuary Parking Lot in Green Lane Park at 7:30 AM.

Steve Kacir announces that Chris Walters has retired from the Banquet Committee and Anita Guris has officially joined the same committee. Steve Kacir and Rob Bierregaard are revamping the Ornithological Studies Committee to remove the short program component and move toward more citizen science projects. More details to come. Please contact Steve or Robb if you are interested in participating.

Gregg Gorton asks members to assist Cynwyd Heritage Trail with an upcoming nestbox project. The group seeks assistance with design and placement of nest boxes. Mike O’Brien and Phil Witmer offer help.
Bonnie Witmer announces that she and Phil Witmer are organizing the creation of a Bird Sanctuary in Westover Park which has been neglected for years. Efforts are underway to remove invasive plants, clean up and restore native habitat which includes a riparian area, and meadow habitat for birds. This is a project of Audubon Birdtown and Tredyffrin Township. The couple is looking for volunteers to help. Contact Bonnie or Phil directly
Members welcomed former curator of birds at Academy of Natural Sciences – Dr. Frank Gill to the meeting.
Steve Kacir reports that he and Tony Croasdale made a trip to Newcastle County DE last weekend. Heard the Sandhill Crane calling and saw 3 Rusty Blackbirds at Dragon Run.
Gregg Gorton reports that the resident Peregrine Falcon pair at St. John the Baptist Church steeple in Manyunk seem to be adjusting to the new nest box that Art McMorris installed due steeple reconstruction at the church. The pair and nest box can be viewed by scope from Cynwyd Heritage Trail.
George Armistead reports a European Goldfinch at the American Birding Association (ABA) headquarters bird feeder on Thursday. The bird is probably not a natural vagrant but still nice to see.
Jack Creighton reports a Great Horned Owl perched at Heinz Refuge this week. Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawk both made brief stops in the same tree and a Bald Eagle was seen fishing in the same area. Also reports that the Bald Eagle pair have at least one egg in the nest at this location which was laid on Feb 17th.
Frank Gill tells the group that a Giant Wood Rail has been seen and confirmed wandering the streets of Portland Oregon (not local but notable ?)
Bert Filemyr and Mike Rosengarten spotted their first Tree Swallow of the season at Prime Hook NWR in Delaware this week. Bert also reports spotting 299 species on a recent trip to Mexico.
