Conservation – Rob Karchnyak

The Federal Communications Commission is seeking comments on proposals for two satellite systems that will be bad for birds as they will increase light during night.

Rob Karchnyak, Jason Hall and Keith Russell met with City Councilmember Cindy Bass to advocate that Philly become a Bird Town, which helps with conservation efforts. They are planning to meet again next month.

The FDR Park case is set for trial in April and this may stop the construction at the park. Rob also got new bluebird boxes for the park.

Billings – Art McMorris

Go birding! Art McMorris stated that Christian Shiebe will be presented the award at the April 16 meeting and give a short talk on their efforts.

Cassinia – Holger Pflicke

No report.

Announcements

Navin Sasikumar repeated that the American Birding Association community weekend will take place from May 22-25 in Philadelphia with gathering points, social happy hour, and bird walks.

Navin also reported that the City Nature Challenge will be April 24-27th and that it is “not a competition this year ”. The challenge is a bioblitz and the local area includes Philadelphia and its bordering counties. This is a worldwide challenge with hundreds of cities across the globe participating.
