We’ll meet at the Coral Ave. Dune Crossover and spend the first 2-3 hours of the morning watching whatever migrants come in, hoping for a nice morning songbird or waterbird flight. It will be a great opportunity to learn about the annual Cape May spring watch census conducted by Tom Reed and crew. The fall censuses are well known but the spring one is less well known.
This is a great trip for folks working on their Billings Big Year list!
Liam, Tom & George will be there from 6am to 9am and perhaps later depending on the flight. We will then size up the day and probably visit another nearby spot like South Cape May Meadows, Stone Harbor, etc. We’ll end the field trip around 1pm. Limit to 10 participants (not including leaders).

Belleplain State Forest is the southern end of the pine barrens. The area is great for early spring migrants as well as breeding birds including Summer Tanager, Prothonotary, Worm-eating and Hooded warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush and Ovenbirds. We will drive to various spots in the park and make short walks. Bring water.
Perhaps finish with a stop at the Sumner Ave. Pee Fields and/or Jake’s Landing
TRAFFIC NOTE – the bridge at Dennisville lake, south of Belleplain is out. Detour is in effect. Please plan accordingly if joining from south of Belleplain.

We will hike a circuit through this property through a wide variety of habitats, including small parcels of forest, meadows with native grasses and bird boxes and a trail that follows the Pennypack Creek. Besides the birds common to these habitats, the hike should provide opportunities to see a range of spring migrants. The trail follows the rolling terrain in the park.
Participants should be prepared for short, moderately steep sections of the trail and a good pair of hiking shoes will be helpful, but not essential. Approximate length of the hike is 2.3 miles.

Come and enjoy Spring Migration at Ceres Park, Mantua Township, Gloucester County, NJ. It is also the first day of City Nature Challenge so all iNaturalist entries will be added to the Philadelphia CNC Project. Ceres Park is a beautiful landscape of natural growth, hosting a variety of animal life that includes mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and many bird species. Per eBird, in April and May, 123 bird species have been sighted, 132 overall. With an extensive trail system through upland and wetland forests, the preserve covers 52 acres. From the parking lot, there are many trails which lead through a diverse selection of plant life and have beautiful views of Emerald and Cedar Lakes. These lakes were once “marl pits,” formed during a mining operation that existed here through the 1800s and early 1900s. Marl is a nutrient-rich marine deposit that was used as fertilizer and gave towns like “Marlton” and “Marlboro” their names. If we are lucky, we may hear or see Pileated Woodpeckers (rare for South Jersey) that are known to frequent Ceres Park.

Important: This trip is full, but you can sign up for a waitlist below.
As part of the City Nature Challenge, the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club and the Philadelphia Botanical Club are partnering to host a trip to the New Jersey Pine Barrens. We’ll find diverse plants, birds, fungi, insects and more – and have fun documenting them on iNaturalist! Our tentative agenda includes a start at the Huber Prairie Warbler Preserve (for possible prothonotary, hooded and of course prairie warblers – and others), followed by a walk at the Franklin Parker Preserve (deservedly known as a place to see the classic pine barrens plants; we’ll pick up some waders, shorebirds and raptors). Species likely to be in bloom include Pyxidanthera barbulata (pixiemoss), Kalmia buxifolia (sandmyrtle), and Hudsonia ericoides (goldenheather). We may finish with a stop near the Carranza Memorial. Details TBD – the agenda may change depending on reports closer to the date. Walk with us as long as you’d like, dress for ticks and don’t forget to bring food and water.
Registration is required, and the trip is limited to 14 participants. This is potentially an all-day trip, with visits to several spots, if the weather cooperates and if there’s time/interest.
Directions will be provided upon registration.
Leaders: Anne Bekker, anne.sarah.bekker@gmail.com or 215-586-0636; and Janet Novak, botany@indri.org or 215-534-6700 (cell).

Several species of shorebirds amass in numbers with possibility to find a rarity such as Curlew Sandpiper which has been found here in recent years. Bring a camera as this is great for photography. Bring a scope if you have one. Bug repellent is a good idea. This trip is timed with high tide to maximize number of birds in the impoundments.

The large field is bordered by woodlands and a farm. The area is just beginning to be birded. Possibilities here include Grasshopper Sparrows, Blue Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, and Horned Larks. The open area is great for keeping an eye out for raptors. The terrain is fairly level on trails throughout the grassy field. A spotting scope is helpful but required. The Tannersville Cranberry Bog, owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, partnered with programming by Kettle Creek EEC, is recognized as the southernmost low altitude boreal bog along the eastern seaboard, and is designated as a National Natural Landmark. Tannersville Cranberry Bog was once a 715-acre kettle lake formed by glacial depressions, eventually becoming filled with layers of sphagnum moss to 60 feet deep, creating an acidic fen supporting a unique habitat.
The Tannersville Cranberry Bog is in Monroe County, PA, near the Delaware Water Gap. Many species of plants and animals normally found in northern boreal bogs (like a little fragment of Canada in PA!) occur here, including several endangered species. This trip explores the unique plant community and its inhabitants including birds, herps, insects, etc.
This is a free trip, but your donation is encouraged to help support maintenance of the trails and programming. (Checks acceptable).
Wear sturdy shoes for a short, uneven hike along a woodland trail to a boardwalk path leading through the wetland habitat.
RSVP is required for this trip. Please contact Cindy Ahern at cynthia.ahern@temple.edu or call or text 215-840-4010 to reserve your spot and for additional details, including meeting location and directions.

Spend a morning birding the fields and forest edges looking for songbird migrants. We will sort through the fall plumages of the (hopefully) numerous migrants at this Fall hotspot. With luck we will get to see a huge fallout of birds, but there should be plenty to see regardless at this time of year. Emphasis will be on sorting out “confusing fall warblers”. The warblers are not confused, we are. They know who they are, but we are the ones confused (sometimes anyway).

In autumn migration, huge numbers of Chimney Swifts roost in chimneys of certain schools in the Philadelphia area. The birds gather near the school just before dark and in a spectacle of nature, dive into the chimney in a synchronized flight. We’ll watch the chimney swifts as they swirl around in a frenzy before finally entering the chimney at the school to roost overnight.
It is a sight to behold that only lasts a few minutes! Arrive at the school around 6:45 PM when the birds begin to gather. Bring a folding chair if you want to relax while we wait for the show.
Meet alongside the Thomas Mifflin School on Conrad Street. Park on Conrad, Midvale or Warden Streets at 6:45 pm.

One of the best hawk migration locations in North America with the best flight days typically around October 1, on days following cold fronts with strong northwesterly winds. Unfortunately, these peak flights don’t always come on weekends. So rather than hoping for a good weekend flight, we’ll watch the weather maps to cherry-pick the best weather conditions. Interested people can sign up (and back out) any time it’s convenient. Two or three days before the trip we’ll pick a field day and contact all registrants as to the day and determine the logistics. If conditions are right, some of us might turn this into a two-day trip to catch the passerine migration at Highbee Beach. With flexibility and cell phones, anything is possible.
